  • Haulover Inlet in Florida is a popular spot for experienced boaters seeking a thrill. Known for its challenging conditions and strong currents, the inlet connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway and is famous for its rough waves and strong winds, which can make boating hazardous. Despite the risks, many boaters are drawn to the inlet's challenging conditions and the opportunity to navigate through it.

    It's incredible how a supposedly "qualified captain" to handle this type of yacht loses control, and the yacht crashes into the bridge. How could the captain have prevented the collision?

    What is the problem with the Captain of the Yacht that ignored the "Divers in the water flag". That is a major fine, but I guess he don't think it applies to the "look at me" boats.

    Well, I applauded the boaters of Haulover last week for ensuring their children (most) were secured as possible with appropriate life preservers (personal floatation devices)....WELP...THAT DIDN'T LAST LONG.... ps. The YACHT I was shocked to the see the amount of damage sustained...I had assumed the area the Yacht hit was more absorbant of impacts and certainly not non-flexible (is that a word?) enough to literally puncture the hull...of course, we have no idea about below the water line. The question you asked I have no idea due to not knowing what line the Captain was initially taking...a Yacht that size would have navigation equipment to assist maintaining the vessel on a steady course or line....I can not think of any scenerio where the Captain passes under the bridge and so off center line that it's Port thrusters would not been able to push the vessel clear of the barrier...but that is a massive $$$$$ repair...even with insurance I am certain the deductible is $20K-$30K or more....but that damage is a 6 figure repair based on my lmited knowledge....when the Yacht approached the bridge was it "yawing" ...swinging the back/stern of the vessel towards the far shore and the bow facing the barrier...basically navgating under the brdige almost sideways....a little more he could of caused an "EVERGREEN" BLOCKADE that happened in the Suez canal a few years ago....Hard for me to imagine the currents are strong enough to abruptly psuh a vessel that large off center where it collides or robes with the barrier....at least the person is obviously very wealthy ...likely has staff to take care of every aspect and whoever the Captain was...if not the owner...is likely unemployed at this hour...that was a massive mess up...

    There are two disasters here-the obvious one was a crashed boat, but the other one was the danger at the scene. It was so bad seeing that yacht speed by the divers. It seems everyone there claims to have the right to speed and muscle others and even run them over then claim self defense. It may have to do with their law to stand their ground so they all do that even in the water. However it seems the diver's company failed to secure the scene by using that little boat w/o the help from port authorities endangering their lives. The speeding boat capt. should get a ticket for ignoring the flag same as running a red light.

    I’m going to surmise the captain of the yacht that hit the bridge abutment came in at dead slow with bare steerageway and didn’t account for the lateral currents produced under the bridge which forced the yacht to one side before the captain could react quick enough to avoid the collision. At that point gunning the throttles would have probably caused more damage so letting the yacht settle against the abutment was the lesser of two evils. Only an educated guess.

    • @Capt_OscarMike
      @Capt_OscarMike 2 місяці тому

      However, does a Yacht that size not have "thrusters" on the port and starboard side to control the "yaw" (using an aircraft term)...I have no clue the technical nomenclature but my understanding the inlet is at a max 14 ft deep...I'm certain over time tons of sediment flows into the inlet so not sure what the draft is on the boat...regardless, if the Captain was following his navigation equipment along with visuals....a current strong enough to cause a vessel that size to abruptly have it's back pushed towards far shore...if that's the case then why didn't the lighter part of the vessel, the bow or front get pushed to the right if we are assuming that currents caused the back of the boat to be pushed towards the far shore which by default would cause the bow to point towards the bridge abatements....from the extremey limited information we have to go on certainly seemed to be Captain error...Unless my eyes decieved me (probably did) there were more than just algea/crud built up on the barrier...it appeared to me to cause indentations and in 2 spots punctured the hull...regardless, that is not a quick "BUFF out" job...the front 1/4 area of the hull on the port side will have to be dry-docked and go through a lot of re-certification to ensure it's structure is not compromised...I can imagine the cabins in that area of that boat are sleeping areas likely with heads and a lot of electronics, TV's, etc behind the walls...all of that will have to be taken out because the USCG is not going to sign off on that vessel without performing some stress testing from the inside....of course, I could be wrong
