...I know Frank's Capitol work is his most revered, but I've always loved this mid-60's Reprise stuff more, due to his mid-life experiences, that bring more wisdom to handle the notes, phrasing, etc.... he also presents himself as an experienced MAN, with elegance, grace, strength, and someone who's weathered a broken heart...But, Beautiful....
What a beautiful love song! They don't write them anymore! Thank God for songwriters like the great jimmy Van Heusen. Gone 31 years now but never forgotten. Listen to Frank sing this song! Boy what a match made in heaven! Jimmy's song and Frank's voice. Thank you for all those songs you left behind Jimmy Van Heusen!
Wow! Someone special introduced this fantastic Sinatra song to me years ago, and even after all this time, I still love it. So much depth, wisdom, truth and pain in this one. Absolutely breath-taking and amazing!
Love is funny, or it's sad Or it's quiet, or it's mad It's a good thing or it's bad But beautiful Beautiful to take a chance And if you fall you fall And I'm thinking I wouldn't mind at all Love is tearful, or it's gay It's a problem or it's play It's a heartache either way But beautiful And I'm thinking if you were mine I'd never let you go And that would be but beautiful I know But beautiful And I'm thinking if you were mine I'd never let you go And that would be but beautiful I know
Sinatras taste in music and lyrics is truely unerring - he concentrates on both elements and brings them together not only in a very consistent way - but so beautifully.
Yes, "But Beautiful" Jimmy Van Heusen/Johnny Burke is a longtime Jazz Standard like Many of the songs Sinatra recorded & The bulk of the songs in The Great American Songbook..... An Era of Music not likely to be duplicated anytime 'Soon......
The Chairman is a bit past his prime and like other TV performances (he hated doing more than one take) there's some technical issues with pitch and such but you can't beat the depth of his reading of this song here. It might be my favorite version of the tune. There's an emotional complexity and romantic yearning here that doesn't come across quite so mature in his 40s version. Tony Bennett and Bill Evan's take is a close second, but is also very very fine.
El amor es divertido o es triste, Love is funny or it's sad, O es tranquilo o es loco, Or it's quiet or it's mad, Es algo bueno o es malo, It's a good thing or it's bad, ¡Pero hermoso! But beautiful! Hermoso para tener una oportunidad Beautiful to take a chance Y si te caes, te caes, And if you fall, you fall, Y estoy pensando que no me importaría en absoluto. And I'm thinking I wouldn't mind at all. El amor es lloroso o es gay. Love is tearful or it's gay. Es un problema o es un juego, It's a problem or it's play, Es un dolor de corazón de cualquier manera, It's a heartache either way, ¡Pero hermoso! But beautiful! Y estoy pensando si fueras mía And I'm thinking if you were mine Nunca te dejaré ir, I'd never let you go, Y eso sería pero hermoso lo sé. And that would be but beautiful I know.
Beautiful-but nobody matches Billie Holiday from "Lady in Satin"-nobody. Not even close. I played with Mel Davis who played the trumpet solo on it-she was encased with that song. He made a living off that solo. I am quite certain Mr. Sinatra would agree. Read about his adulation for her, right up to her death.
spot on. whatever one might think of Sinatra his respect for his fellow musicians was beyond extraordinary. he pioneered crediting session musicians on albums. an extraordinary treat is his TV special with Gilberto and Ella. The man sat on the steps with the audience in rapt respectful silence while Ella was singing. truly amazing.
I do not know what you mean by, "too mannered". I saw both Como and Sinatra live in concert, not together but I am happy I got to see them live. Sinatra put emotion into every song, into every performance unlike Como. Como had a better singing voice than Sinatra when both were over 65- 70 years old, I'll give him that.
@@chrisnalina1755 i notice you never mentioned anything about listening to como on his live version of "but beautiful", so therefore you are unable to compare the two and so realize what i am saying. if you had taken the time to actually listen to what i had recommended you would have seen and heard the difference: sinatra is "acting" the song and como is "being" the song. of course, all of it comes to a matter of taste, and if the sinatra version is what you prefer, so be it. i can appreciate both. perhaps "too mannered" was a little harsh, and it raised your hackles (whatever they are). as to whether sinatra put "emotion into every song", i think that when he was at his best he "performed" the emotion of the song he sang (he had great phrasing). i saw sinatra 4 times at the sun dome in tampa. the second time i saw him he was obviously hammered (the fourth time age had caught up with him and fortunately he had steve and eydie to help him along), but the first time i saw him live in 1984, he was amazing (i wish they had a recording of THAT concert). he amazed me with his showmanship and the great (considering his age) condition of his voice (i had expected to have to make allowances for his age but i did not have to). you should try listening to the como albums from the 1960s "look to your heart", "lightly latin (which he recorded a year before the sinatra/jobim album and when you listen to como's album you'll be able to tell how much he influenced the sinatra/jobim album), and some of the songs on "como in italy". all are now available together on bgo for a very reasonable price (about 15 dollars). by listening, you'll realize how como equaled and sometimes surpassed the sinatra versions.
@@humblecharlie4383 I saw Sinatra in June of 1984 at Carnegie Hall and he was great. Lots of underground audio material of Sinatra exists in terms of fan recordings of his concerts. I do not know personally anybody regarding that but I know they are out there. I prefer listening to the 1953-1959 Sinatra as that is what I feel he was at his best in terms of his voice. Also, I do not believe anybody has equaled or surpassed Sinatra with those mid-1950 theme albums in terms of the quality of the singing or the arrangements. I went to Sinatra's 75th birthday concert at the Meadowlands that was televised. It was sad to see Sinatra being propped up by Steve and Eydie and him forgetting the lyrics and struggling. Como is a very underrated singer perhaps because he sang many novelty tunes back in the 1950's he never got the credit he deserves. Sinatra and Como had different styles, different approaches to singing and neither one is necessarily better than the other as it is just up to what a person listening prefers. Thanks for telling me about those Como albums.
@@chrisnalina1755listen to perry como's version of sondheim's "goodbye, for now" from the movie "reds". it is available on youtube. btw also listen to tony bennett singing gene lees' lyrics (with a melody adapted from an erik satie melody) "once in a garden" (i wish sinatra had recorded this song). both recordings are on the level of the best of sinatra when he was in good voice.
Unfortunate that watching this video clip apparently gets in the way of giving a straightforward opinion on the vocalising or on Gordon Jenkins arrangement - without having to get into whether Nat 'King' Cole or Nina Simone is better.
why? because you are a child and cant chew gum and walk at the same time? when you watch an academy award actor performing does it prevent you from knowing he is the best? you are a simple minded dumb bell
Fake acting? Sorry, I just don't see that. The man was always spot-on with his emotions and expressions while singing. He was the king of cool and I won't tolerate any criticism on him. He was the best.

Sinatra and Van Heusen make something happen that's sublime. put this back to back with Here's that Rainy Day you will never be the same!
Happy Birthday Jimmy Van Heusen! Love this and all your songs. You sure knew how to write love songs.
WOW, Rare to hear and see Sinatra singing this old Jimmy Van Heusen ballad. Nice restoration. Thanks.
And great lyrics by Johnny Burke

Great rendition of a lovely song. So different too the version he did with Dean Martin in a medley on TV
Eternel, inoubliable Artiste. Love him.❤
I love it.

Sinatras taste in music and lyrics is truely unerring - he concentrates on both elements and brings them together not only in a very consistent way - but so beautifully.
Simply he's the best we ever had
I don’t think so! To me, it was Nat King Cole. You should hear his rendition of this song.
he is beautiful here in the 1960's.
LOVE it.

Well, if you had any big ideas about becoming a singer, and brains, this ought to be enough to dissuade you.
Agree🥰

he got 102 year old in 12th of December

Sinatra was listening to the backing. If the backing arrangement was well done he would rise to the occasion and render a worthy vocal.
