    What a facinating story, I never knew about these pre- invasion Norman castles. Though we know the Norman connection was much earlier than 1066 as King Æthelread had married Emma of Normandy way back in 1002. Emma of course became Edward the Confessors mother. After Edward died in 1066 this lead to the Norman conquest. Also the Norman knight who built this castle Richard Fitz Scrob, was obviously the son of someone called Scrob as the prefix 'Fitz' signifies a 'son of'.
    Thanks for this video, i found it very interesting .

      Thank you for the kind comment and the extra information! If true This would make William the b**stard the father of, Richard Fitz Schrob (the b**stard). It’s all very interesting!

      My pleasure, though I don't think William the bast*rd was the father of Richard Fitz Scrob ?
      Though as a matter of interest my ancestors actually fought at the battle of Hastings with William. Their surname at the time was Venables from Venables in Normandy. After the battle when William was handing out the rewards a younger son of Venable was given the estate at Brereton in Cheshire formerly the estate of the Englishman Wulfgeat. After which the younger Venables was known as de Brereton, though after sometime the 'de' was dropped.

    A fascinating video. FitzScrob must have been an ally of Ralph of Mantes whose disastrous campaign against the Welsh earned him the nickname Ralph the Timid. Very good to see the actual places involved in these tales of the past, even better that some of it is still standing. Sheriff comes from Shire Reeve an Anglo-Saxon era title that still exists today, including in America.

    Interesting that a Norman knight was invited into England before 1066. Norman knights were normally invited by Kings to keep order in bits of the land that were lawless, such as in border or rebellious regions. This happened in Italy and in Scotland. Over time these Norman families would grow in power to become very high up in the aristocracy. In Scotland’s case they went on to become royal dynasties I.e, the Bruce’s and the Stewarts. It might have been that the Normans would have continued to grow in power within England even without the 1066 conquest.

    Thank you Dan I suspect this really adds to the evidence on Wild Edric and the Harrying of the North. It would seem to suggest that the Edric we believe to be the Wild Edric is whom we have come to see as Edric. Not sure if this is the Edric of Condover though?

    • @thirdratecontent585
      @thirdratecontent585  2 місяці тому +2

      Yes the Normans did wreak a lot of damage and destruction during these campaigns. English folklore was also irreparably damaged during this time sadly. This Edric fellow seems to pop up all over this part of the country (and our videos). Yes he may be different from the Condover Edric. The distant past is murky

    • @thirdratecontent585
      @thirdratecontent585  2 місяці тому +4

      The Ley Lines Alfred Watkins talked about in his book, The Old Straight Track were straight lines drawn between three or more landmarks (thought to be pre historical in origin). There are energy vortexes and other things (I’m not an expert in this) that are not straight. The St Micheal Ley line (there are many more) is one of the most famous straight Ley Lines. 👍
