Tony Robinson and his faithful band of archaeologists risk the dangers of hidden mine shafts in the Derbyshire coalfields to dig into the heart of a building that once dominated the landscape: Codnor Castle. Today it lies in ruins and there's almost nothing known of how it looked in its prime, but as it was home to the De Grey family, it must have once been a very impressive sight.
    Series 15, Episode 01

Helen has a most genuine personality and always has that little smile + twinkle in her eye, a mark of a great Witt and expectations of opportunities to engage in with that most endearing trait.
I adore folks with this trait. It's the trait that always gets my attention in men, "William Powell, the early Actor/Star, comes to mind." ("My Man Godfrey" with Carole Lombard and "the Thin Man" series with Myrna Liu, works from the late 1930's and 1940's)
He's my favorite ffrom the "Golden Age of Hollywood" , followed by Tyrone Power and Carey Grant.
Each had that special Twinkle in their eye and delicious little Smile. Carole Lombard did, as well.
That's the Helen trait that I find so likeable.

I did an excavation right here in the former colonies on one side of the castle (ok, it was more of turning over the soil next to the garage to put in vegetable garden). The artifacts that were found were amazing. Some ancient tools (a Craftsman brand plastic screwdriver handle and the rusty blade of keyhole saw), a Hot Wheels toy car with only one wheel (carbon dated all the way back to 1975) and what appears to be a burial ground for a squad of plastic army soldiers (RIP). Now that's history!

I've found quite a few army men as I've turned over the back lawn to plant veggies. Along with buckets of broken glass, rusty nails and various metal junk. Before our house was built, the neighbor used the land as a dump. For all my trouble, you'd think I'd find at least one indian arrowhead.

It's kind of fun seeing the backstory of a place you live, even if it's all in plastic! 😂 (Love your narration of it BTW)
I've lived in quite a few older houses due to renting cheaply (sigh!) & find it fascinating to see how much things like switchboards, plumbing or window construction have changed over just 100 years? You can find plenty of odd stuff if the place has been DIY-ed a lot too. Gotta say, most newer houses are much less interesting architecturally.... but man, they're WAY easier to clean & temp control!! 🙄

Isn’t hard to “find” a coin when it’s a clear and obvious plant for viewer ratings... nobody else seems to notice how suspiciously clean and preserved it is for having supposedly been picked out of a pile of dirt that was disturbed fir the first time in a couple thousand years... also you don’t see it get “discovered” all you see is some guy (odds are an actor since most of the people on this show who do any talking or commentating (like tony) are lifelong paid actors) holding it in his hand which is “shaking from excitement” which isn’t hard too fake because anyone can shake their hand

They do turn up occasionally but you are right in that only a small percentage of detectorists will ever find one. I learned something from watching this today, and that was what 'wainscotting' is. Its a word/term that has puzzled me since childhood, when I encountered it in a book about various mysterious things. As well as introducing me to such things as the Cottingley fairies and the Flying Dutchman, it also had a section on apparitions, including an anecdote about a strange cylindrical blue- white object that seized hold of a woman whilst she, her husband and an unspecified number of companions were sat at dinner. Naturally the husband leapt to his wife's defense, snatching up a chair and lashing out at the mysterious thing, only to have the chair pass right through and strike the 'wainscotting' behind. For forty odd years, I'd assumed this odd word was simply an old synonym for skirting boards: this taught me that it's a system of full-wall wood panelling, and makes a great deal more sense of that very strange tale!

I've been lucky enough to find some lovely things when detecting and the thought about the person who lost each one does run through your mind. Perfect example, I found a lovely Victorian horseshoe sweetheart brooch; all that was wrong with it was, a broken pin (presumably it fell off the unsuspecting owner's jacket or coat). Imagine how distraught the poor woman would have been, losing such a precious item given to her with love - imagine having to tell your sweetheart that you lost it. There is of course a story behind so many of the things we find when detecting and it is one of the most fascinating aspects of the hobby. Incidentally, I had the brooch restored so it is ready to go again. I am single at the moment, but hoping to find someone I can give that to in the future.
