Hey Tom, I was in the red Ioniq6 when you arrived at Yaas, realized you were mid video and didn't want to interrupt. We had no issues charging there, it was plug and play for us i think maxed out around 98kw or so from memory. Seeing your car plugged me validated the fact that non-Teslas should’ve been able to charge at the Yass site - not sure if you felt our disappointment when you saw us unable to charge with the G6 😭 Interesting that you only got 98kW despite the Ioniq 6 being 800V also. I’ve heard other 800V cars such as Kia EV6 only maxing out at ~90kW also. Will test again in a follow up vid if/when XPeng sort it out 🙏 Again thanks for your comment on PlugShare! I still find it useful on Aussie EV road trips given the dismal state of our regional network 😭
@@LudicrousFeed Yeah not sure what happened there, maybe too many cars plugged in? Not sure how the tesla chargers are set up, it was our first one. Usually at the chargefox or Evie chargers we max out at 245kw, I think that is the absolute max the car can do from what I read on forums. Agree, plugshare is a must! I always check recent comments before I navigate, so many chargers are slower than they should be or completely broken. Great video, car looks awesome!
Your speed limitation is not due to too many cars being plugged in … from memory the V3/4s don’t encounter power sharing issues like the older V2 plugs. Besides there was no one next to you at the time I think
I was on the way down over Christmas as well and stopped at Yass both ways. The EV6 charged at 97kw from both 25% and at 55%. Would be good if Tesla enabled the 800V charging but unfortunately not :( Having said that I find it ironic that given it is a subsidised EV charging spot the NSW Government didn't force Tesla to put the V4 electronics which supposedly would of allowed 800V charging. For all the 800V cars of which there aren't that many it is literally the stop for anybody leaving Sydney that has a WLTP of 500 or thereabouts.

Just detailed one in Melbourne to be displayed in a shopping centre through my business. Xpeng asked for the best paint protection available. I gotta say the build in my opinion destroys the likes of tesla. Really was blown away by it. Rear does look like a macan!
This is a great vid that showcases our lack of infrastructure and range anxiety paired with charging stations that work and have a capability to charge vehicles in good tie. Until these issues are resolved, I (amongst a lot of other Australians, I am sure) will remain ICE vehicle drivers for the foreseeable future.
If they wanted anything to improve on the Syd - Mel route, they would've built a high speed rail decades ago. Amazing how much time people waste on charging their iPads on wheels and for the most part actually be fine with it.

Great job, Tom & Joy. Your point is well made that the EV charging for non-Teslas between SYD-MEL is not good enough for a country that depends on EV innovation and uptake. Yass is the perfect place to charge and it should be easy. If someone had used the other plug at your Yass Woolies charger, the rate would have dropped by half. And the NRMA 50 kW charger at Yass stops working after a few minutes. That leaves us all dependent on Tesla chargers. Why is this so hard?

The fact the Sydney Melbourne route is still not fixed in 2025 is not good enough. There's now 200,000+ registered EVs on the roads now. Next year it will be 300,000. They need to sort this situation out.

Personally I think the Seal is a better looking car and has an “old world” charm about it but the tech and software UI lets it down. The G6 probably has a more contemporary feel to it and the software/drive dynamics and Xpilot are where it’s ahead.

Unfortunately a $50 saving for an infrequent trip like is not worth the charging downtime and headaches. I own both an EV and an ice car. Until the charging infrastructure is improved (dramatically) I will always use an ICE or Hybrid for my long distance trips.
@ agree. Our EV does around 400k on a full charge and we’ve only ever charged at home. Fantastic move from a petrol car chewing up $100 per week for running around.
Not having to pull into a petrol station at least once a week has also been a big bonus. Driving the petrol car for long trips on the weekend (even filling up) is now even more enjoyable
So it has the same software flaw the MG has when trying to adjust HVAC on the fly, I want instant access while driving and not thumbling around trying to find software buttons while driving.

Great video, it all comes down to charging times, availability and rate of charge for long distance drives. Great looking car, some angels of the car reminds me of Porsche, Jaguar and Tesla, inside the car rear reclining seats and boot cover from Lexus just a name a few great futures. 😉
Do you think there's a need to buy a panoramic roof shade? Temps regularly reach 35°C in HK from March to Sept. Also, did you see a lot of glare from the sun above your head or is the roof tint dark enough?
I think a decent sunshade especially if it's silver lined, makes a big difference to insulation as I showed in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ULvt7OmAsDA/v-deo.html The glass roof was adequately tinted as not to hinder our sight during the drive - there was minimal glare and no worse than other EVs I've driven with glass roofs

The steering buttons are customisable. There is a star button which you can chose from 5 different options. I have set mine up for crusie control with lane centering. Now I just do one press and it sets up. No more annoying Tesla double tap on the stalk.
Tesla Superchargers are not working properly with 800 volt architecture vehicles. It's known to other brands too. Other high power chargers are managing this very well ...
Yup I’ve noticed on socials that EGMP 800V cars only max at around 90kW at Tesla Superchargers … in fact if you scroll through the comments, the person who was in the red Ioniq 6 charging at the Yass location left a comment that they were only getting around 98kW also. Will be interesting to see if/when XPeng fix this, at what max rate can the G6 charge at a V4 supercharger … stay tuned 🙏

So excited for this series. Enjoyed my test drive of the G6 (am a MY owner) as tech really impressed me but I found the drive a bit.. unresponsive and floaty? Even toying with the steering I’d say the hardest steering option was still probably closer to “standard” in a Tesla.
@ yes, couldn’t agree more Joy! Is this something that’s updatable via software? Or a hard coded thing in the drive dynamics? Not a car head so I don’t know 🤷♂️
I’d say the steering column is still mostly mechanical although if the steering stiffness can be adjusted from the infotainment screen there would be a software component that can be potentially tweaked for sensitivity levels

great job guys. Joy adds a little extra to these videos. Xpeng will sort out the Tesla issue, hopefully not with a part conversion like your Seal. Also it is frustrating with the charging situation in Australia currently. But things will get better. We just need one of the big guys to step up and invest. Even if it is one of the Petrol companies. Pivot to offer some better/fast EV charging solutions. in 5-10 (more like 10) i can picture a few European style charging plaza's along the SYD-MEL route. 50-60 different types of chargers.
I was considering replacing the Model 3 LR this year with something else but if these other brands are still having issues with the Tesla Superchargers it looks like it will be the new Y for me

Thanks👍 Watch from 21:06 where I go through the native trip planning. In fact as I get deeper into the trip I start to trust the car’s nav and range estimator more and more. Also watch Part 2: Mel to Syd where we use the native nav a lot more - that’s the beauty of doing these long drives: you learn to trust the car👍
What a great and thorough review - thanks Tom. EV manufacturers do not exploit all of the unique advantages of an EV - V2L or better still V2G for example. The Xpeng G6 efficiency appears to stand out above the crowd. In my personal check list for selecting my next EV LFP chemistry is not negotiable, so the G6 is off the list. I was a little concerned when I saw 115km/h on the displays...can they book you on that evidence? (personally I think we should join the rest of the world and have a top speed limit of 130km/h). I've noticed very few new car reviews from non Asian manufacturers recently. Sign of the times. Charging infrastructure in a country where investment risk appetite is anaemic, will always lag EV adoption by a country mile. Thankfully we have organisations like the NRMA etc.
Glad you enjoyed it. The speedo seems to be calibrated slower than true GPS eg Waze or Google Maps … at the car’s speedo of 115kph, Waze would consistently only show 110kph 🤷♂️ Also check out the SR variant which is LFP chemistry 👍

Another quick one. On the weekend at Bunnings I saw they sell portable chargers. Not sure how much charge they held but they werent bulky at all. Like a jerry can but electricity. Nice.
If you’re referring to a mobile connector then yes they are handy: plug into any 10A power point and you’ll usually get 10kph of charge. Slow but it’ll get you out of trouble eventually
Crazy there is no frunk considering I watched reviews of the EV3 from Europe and EV5 from NZ earlier tonight and both have frunks plus considering how close to Tesla it is that they didn't design it to have a frunk even if it is only enough for a type-2 cable and abit extra even my lower spec Kona(2024 version) has one. I personally need some buttons/dials though particularly for commonly used features one reason I love Hyundai/Kia. Would be interesting to know if Xpeng has what I call the deadzone between the footrest and the brake pedal to put a foot and stretch out the leg that little bit more. Hopefully they fix the supercharger issue as well as it sounds like it's a global issue and they need to get it fixed urgently.
I’m not too concerned about the frunk … as handy as it is, if I’m being honest with myself I reckon the only times I’ve opened the bonnet of my Seal is to show it for my UA-cam vids 😂 But yes if XPeng can offer an OEM frunk retrofit as an accessory it would be the icing on the cake. Along with the Supercharger fix
@@LudicrousFeed I will be honest I have a frunk in my Kona the only thing in it is my Type-2 cable which I have only used once as a test only to see if I can actually get almost 11kW which I could. The Supercharger fix is definitely needed. Those RACV chargers I suspect they went cheap and only put in 50kW as max on those Kempower units they need to up them to 300kW so each car can get 150kW (if they can take it).
Good real world review! I can’t find anywhere any reference to G6 turning circle. For everyday driving this is a big issue. Skodas for example are amazing. I can u turn where many cars have to a 3 point. This type of info from many of the manufacturers is pretty scant.
Smaller distances in Malaysia between your cities is to your advantage. When we’re talking hundreds of km in Australia between our towns, then a reliable DC network is paramount to EV adoption in this country

I also tried the tesla supercharging 2 days with my BYD Seal, and failed as well, tried for 30 mins, while I saw another Atto 3 working well with it. So annoying.

The BYD Atto3 Chinese aircon doesn’t work over 25c apparently and the Aircon stops when your car stops My daughter rented one and had this issue and internet has thousands of BYD buyers with the same issues

Thanks! No noisier than other road trips I've done ... the Rode mics are also very sensitive 😅 No powered roof blind so I would definitely look for an aftermarket shade. SR means you'd probably have to factor in minimum 3 stops although I'm happy to be proven wrong

if Joy likes the Xpeng G6, TrueEV/XpengAU should sell a heavily discounted brand-new 2025-built TeslaSupercharger-working RHD Xpeng G6 to her, and the 2023 blue-paint Tesla Model Y can be sold. XpengAU will sell quite a lot of RHD G6’s just from seeing 1-2 videos per week on here by an actual owner of it (not a 3 month / 6 month lend, if a lend the viewers will think “oh they don’t really own it, not sure I want to buy one myself and take the risk with a new brand”) seeing an owners G6 videos regularly it will assure the audience that you actually own one and will see you taking it to UltraTune once year / once-two-yearly etc
I think even if it’s discounted, people will still say it’s being partially sponsored which is fair. To give a decent opinion I think it has to be purchased at full price (or at least within the usual boundaries of negotiation by a normal buyer)

Trust me when I say the AC in the Chinese cars are calibrated to a higher “normal”. I usually have my BYD Seal set at 24 whereas in our Model Y (and every other Tesla I’ve ever driven) it’s set to 21
@@LudicrousFeed I believe it's due to the heat rejection capability of the sun roof. Tesla has no (or negligible) heat rejection, while the G6 has 98.5% heat rejection. So the Tesla is trying to cool the car as it is heated by the roof.

34:19 they need to look at the petrol car major route - Wilton 2571 / Pheasants Nest NSW 2574 ..to.. Craigieburn VIC 3064, and on ‘the roadside’ of this route every 150km or 175km they NEED to install a site of minimal 14 EVSE fast-stations (7 sharing which means 14 cables) that are undercover, so bEV drivers can pull over and charge, than having to detour off the petrol car normal major route
That charging speed is why non LFP still has a great future, at least until the so-called next gen LFP starts coming onto the market as most LFP are painfully slow at changing, including BYD even with very large batteries they still do not charge a constant fast speed. And good to see manufacturers can make the nanny systems non intrusive.
@LudicrousFeed Lots of non 800v charges still have fast charging speeds, our old EV6 would charge at an average 170kw till 77% and it seems the Xpeng is even faster right up to 90%. 800v chargers are not really needed. We have a few 300kw 800v chargers, but the 150kw and 180kw 400v the EV6, still takes advantage of the charging speeds. I believe in our neck of the woods the biggest supplier of DC charging locations have abandoned putting in 300kw 800v chargers and now are only installing 150kw, as still most EV including brand new ones are still very slow at charging with the exception of a few
Teslas only maintain their advertised peak charging rates for a short time. Assuming you have a 800V charger, BYD Seals (82.5kWh battery versions) have a comparable 20-80% average charging rate to a Tesla with NMC batteries.
MODEL Y "Juniper" will have CATL LFP SHENXING and SHENXING PLUS and it will bring TESLA back to number one. CATL will save TESLA they have the batteries that TESLA failed to produce.

Reckon BYD, XPeng, Zeekr, Hyundai and others should jointly with local governments build more charging stations. Maybe even invites the largest ev charging provider in China TGood over to jointly develop here…
What's really bewildering is that in China, people dislike the looks of the car, especially the rounded rear. It's literally the butt of jokes. But outside of China, its the polar opposite. People REALLY like its looks.
The first entrant into a new industry well before the rest can have such an advantage if investing early, and the prime example here is the Tesla Supercharger network. When Tesla has 12 chargers in Yass, is building a new charging station at Coolac, has another 6 chargers at the Dog on a Tuckerbox Gundagai stop, and 9 charges at Holbrook, why would a third party such as Chargefox or Evie Networks, or any of the petrol stations for that matter, invest in anything more than 2 chargers at a site between Goulburn and Albury when their competitor has so many chargers and has the cash balance and cash flow to fund further supercharger stations.
Fair point. Surely there’s a business model around EV charging other than purely trying to make a margin off selling electricity … food and beverage perhaps? Looking forward to seeing how Gridserve/Flowpower perform in Australia
@@LudicrousFeed I reckon there's a fair few similarities here comparing the Australian supercharger market structure with the Australian airline market. Qantas is the incumbent, every one of its competitors has gone bust, it invested early and as a result has a market share of 2/3. New competitors (Virgin after existing administration) go for the most profitable markets first (MEL-SYD-BNE). Essentially the only competition Qantas has on country flights is the Commonwealth Govt bankrolling Rex. So economically these third party providers should build out in the most profitable spots first, and this ain't 300+km away from the nearest capital city. I'd be surprised if Tesla's share of the supercharger market wasn't around 2/3. Just like with Rex in country areas, we really need govts to bankroll 80%+ of the costs of installing superchargers in spots 300+kms away from capital cities IMHO.
Gee, this looks impressive. It is like X-Peng took a Model Y, listened to the customer complaints, and released a 'fixed' version. My only concern is the viability of the company here in Oz. With all the new Chinese models now competing for that 100 000 EV sales per year, who will be around in five years? Even Tesla must be a question mark although it has the inside running.

Still press cars in Australia.. but public in Europe for a while. Seems to be a big failing that local staff hadn't tested it before handing the car to Tom presumably knowing where he was going to drive.
There’s so many new Chinese EV brands coming out and I get them all mixed up. Since there’s so many new brands coming here, it’s a bit of a gamble buying any of the new brands as they’re disproven in Australia. So you don’t know how long each will last in Australia if the sales are low which wouldn’t surprise me with how few people actually buy EVs now.
Australians are understandably naturally cautious about anything new or foreign so my prediction in 2025 and beyond is that BEV sales will only rise (without intervention) once the rate of new entrants start to stabilise
@ I do think if more cheaper EVs (mostly from China) come to Australia then yeah the adoption rate will go up and I realise there’s a bunch of new options coming this year. But at the same time I wouldn’t expect sales to boom again, mainly because of new hybrid cars from Toyota/Honda and others
Maybe. I think the Chinese PHEVs will also be very compelling eg BYD Shark 6 and SL6 make a very good case with being able to run almost purely on the electric powertrain in the city (if you charge often enough) while having enough range to satisfy most long drives. Sales in AUSTRALIA are constantly increasing. You cannot go wrong with BYD, ZEEKR or XPENG. BYD is now the world's leading car/truck/bus/battery company, ZEEKR along with POLESTAR and VOLVO and LOTUS are owned by GEELY a huge brand and XPENG is doing very well and licences their tech to legacy brands.
@ well you can go wrong with them. Australia is a brutal climate for BEVs especially ones that are built in and for China. Long term costs are what hold them back with things such as battery replacement which for the Polestar 2 at least costs $50K for the battery alone and doesn’t include labour costs to replace it. So you can actually go very wrong
You really need to start testing how safe the auto pilot systems are on each car. We know the Tesla will bring the car to a complete stop should you fail to keep hold of the steering wheel, but many systems just switch off the lane centre while keeping the set speed. Which of course will not end well. I know Kia is bad for it, and only the very latest Toyota bring you to a safe stop. But would be great to see how many Chinese cars are coming out with a much safer lane keep/centre system
@@LudicrousFeed I am not in Australia, if the two destinations as important as Sydney and Melbourne have that few charging location options, the fault is not in me but in the stars. Three brands already landed in Australia BYD, XPENG and ZEEKR need to understand two vital things 1/ TESLA's Supercharger network sold TESLA cars even to people who almost never use a Supercharger. 2/ Forcing people to DC charge at 42% SOC is not good for charging speed, BMS or overall battery health. All 3 of the fore mentioned Chinese brands have their own charging stations and BYD has major Solar tech too. If they want to sell big in Australia they need to build their networks and of course open to all CCS2 EVs thus an income stream from EVs in general. A win-win. BYD is building a network in Brazil they and the others need to not make that an exception.
@@honesty_-no9he Of course in an ideal world there should be chargers dotted along the highway every 150km so that we don’t have to worry about planning as was my experience driving an Ioniq 5 in the UK in 2024. But unless you are in the car with us at the time, I don’t think it’s fair for you to question why we charged at 42% when you don’t even fully understand the charging landscape in Australia. This is directed not just at you but for any viewer who thinks they could’ve done a better job than us given the circumstances. As you’ve seen in this video, the non-Tesla DC charging infrastructure between Sydney and Melbourne is average at best so we felt it was better to top up at a relatively higher SoC of 42% rather than risk either being stranded or having to drive at 80kph to limp to the next viable DC charger. I hope this explanation clarifies our actions because when you are on the highway, theory goes out the window and you need to make quick decisions using substandard cell connectivity about where to charge next
@@LudicrousFeed I have stopped to charge a few times at Tarcutta -2 x 350kw Evie chargers there. I think you should have easily reached there. Of course if PlugShare indicated it was offline, then Yass was your best option. Evie at Tarcutta and Avenel have both been offline for me before and caused some 0% drives!! ( now I always check PlugShare)

The Tesla can be switched onto full self driving not just autonomous driving (X Pilot cruise control) for the whole trip so you don’t touch the steering wheel much Tesla very similar price and has this main advantage as well as its own supercharger pump network and no servicing costs a heat pump Also Tesla have regular upgrades through the software and will hold their value better than XPeng as Tesla is a known brand but good effort from XPeng
Slight correction: Tesla vehicles in Australia cannot currently cannot be used in “full self driving” mode as you’ve seen in North America. I’ve driven a Model 3, Model Y and Model S along our highways and you will still need to wiggle the steering wheel every few minutes as part of the well known “Autopilot Nag”. This occurs even if you purchase either EAP or the “FSD” package
As far as I know, there are no plans by the relevant authorities to permit the use of full self-driving in Australia yet. No point buying this option from Tesla or any other carmaker.

We were saying in the car over and over: if only we could’ve charged at the Superchargers! It would’ve made for a much different experience 😅 And yes 40kW which drops to 20kW when someone else pulls up is disgraceful honestly … but then again the Woolies Chargefox should not be relied on as a highway stop! We need faster chargers off the Hume for interstate travellers like us rather than needing to detour into the town

It's so sad to see Australia is where Europe was 10 years ago with EV charging. Yes, glad you found the Woolies chargefox but mate why the fuck do they waste time, energy and money to install 50KW (41 of which you were only getting) chargers. That's really not something useful. How long does one stay at Woolies? 10-20 minutes max? So you'd get like a 10KW top up... Nice but erm yea... if you have an 80+KW battery that just isn't much. Those will inevitably get ripped out in x years from now and replaced with proper chargers. So why not just put those in today
Am I the only one who looks at this with horror? Phone apps and scrolling through screens while you should be watching the road. Unable to charge at Tesla points when you were told you can. Range anxiety and sitting around waiting to charge. I just want to get in a car drive. I have enough problems without buying a car that comes with an entire set of new things to worry about. I don’t want to become a computer nerd/ electrical engineer just to get to the grocery store.

I think 3 is extremely unlikely - why sabotage their own sales. 2 is possible but in all honesty I don’t think I’m important enough for them to care - besides I have nothing to hide. Number 1: this is one of the critical issues that the new comers need to deal with to gain the trust of the Australian car buying public
Given most of our trade is with China - Australia would be in deep deep trouble if there was war with China. Not least because all our petrol reserves are in the US. But our leaders definitely have a mid 20C vibe in terms of our strategic international partnerships. Parts would be a problem across all drive trains as presumably shipping would be under threat. Much much better to have an EV in the extremely unlikely event of a war with China.

Hey Tom, I was in the red Ioniq6 when you arrived at Yaas, realized you were mid video and didn't want to interrupt. We had no issues charging there, it was plug and play for us i think maxed out around 98kw or so from memory.

Interesting that you only got 98kW despite the Ioniq 6 being 800V also. I’ve heard other 800V cars such as Kia EV6 only maxing out at ~90kW also. Will test again in a follow up vid if/when XPeng sort it out 🙏

Usually at the chargefox or Evie chargers we max out at 245kw, I think that is the absolute max the car can do from what I read on forums.
Agree, plugshare is a must! I always check recent comments before I navigate, so many chargers are slower than they should be or completely broken. Great video, car looks awesome!
Your speed limitation is not due to too many cars being plugged in … from memory the V3/4s don’t encounter power sharing issues like the older V2 plugs. Besides there was no one next to you at the time I think
I was on the way down over Christmas as well and stopped at Yass both ways. The EV6 charged at 97kw from both 25% and at 55%.
Would be good if Tesla enabled the 800V charging but unfortunately not :( Having said that I find it ironic that given it is a subsidised EV charging spot the NSW Government didn't force Tesla to put the V4 electronics which supposedly would of allowed 800V charging.
For all the 800V cars of which there aren't that many it is literally the stop for anybody leaving Sydney that has a WLTP of 500 or thereabouts.

Just detailed one in Melbourne to be displayed in a shopping centre through my business. Xpeng asked for the best paint protection available. I gotta say the build in my opinion destroys the likes of tesla. Really was blown away by it. Rear does look like a macan!

This is a great vid that showcases our lack of infrastructure and range anxiety paired with charging stations that work and have a capability to charge vehicles in good tie. Until these issues are resolved, I (amongst a lot of other Australians, I am sure) will remain ICE vehicle drivers for the foreseeable future.
I truly hope it does improve … it isn’t too much better compared to my Syd to Mel trips in an EV from 2022 and 2023 😭
If they wanted anything to improve on the Syd - Mel route, they would've built a high speed rail decades ago. Amazing how much time people waste on charging their iPads on wheels and for the most part actually be fine with it.

Great job, Tom & Joy. Your point is well made that the EV charging for non-Teslas between SYD-MEL is not good enough for a country that depends on EV innovation and uptake. Yass is the perfect place to charge and it should be easy. If someone had used the other plug at your Yass Woolies charger, the rate would have dropped by half. And the NRMA 50 kW charger at Yass stops working after a few minutes. That leaves us all dependent on Tesla chargers. Why is this so hard?
Watch Part 2 when we returned to Woolies Yass … someone DID join us at the same power unit which dropped us to 19kW 😭😭

The fact the Sydney Melbourne route is still not fixed in 2025 is not good enough. There's now 200,000+ registered EVs on the roads now. Next year it will be 300,000. They need to sort this situation out.

If you were to pick between the byd seal or xpeng g6. Which one would you choose? Having difficulty choosing atm.
Personally I think the Seal is a better looking car and has an “old world” charm about it but the tech and software UI lets it down. The G6 probably has a more contemporary feel to it and the software/drive dynamics and Xpilot are where it’s ahead.

Unfortunately a $50 saving for an infrequent trip like is not worth the charging downtime and headaches. I own both an EV and an ice car. Until the charging infrastructure is improved (dramatically) I will always use an ICE or Hybrid for my long distance trips.
@ agree. Our EV does around 400k on a full charge and we’ve only ever charged at home. Fantastic move from a petrol car chewing up $100 per week for running around.
Not having to pull into a petrol station at least once a week has also been a big bonus. Driving the petrol car for long trips on the weekend (even filling up) is now even more enjoyable
So it has the same software flaw the MG has when trying to adjust HVAC on the fly, I want instant access while driving and not thumbling around trying to find software buttons while driving.
BYD also is the same currently although an update is coming apparently to remedy this

Arrows and the Roller Knob on the left side of the Steering wheel is what I use to adjust the Temp and Fan Speed. Voice command is also very accurate

Also, did you see a lot of glare from the sun above your head or is the roof tint dark enough?

The glass roof was adequately tinted as not to hinder our sight during the drive - there was minimal glare and no worse than other EVs I've driven with glass roofs

The steering buttons are customisable. There is a star button which you can chose from 5 different options. I have set mine up for crusie control with lane centering. Now I just do one press and it sets up. No more annoying Tesla double tap on the stalk.

Tesla Superchargers are not working properly with 800 volt architecture vehicles. It's known to other brands too. Other high power chargers are managing this very well ...
Yup I’ve noticed on socials that EGMP 800V cars only max at around 90kW at Tesla Superchargers … in fact if you scroll through the comments, the person who was in the red Ioniq 6 charging at the Yass location left a comment that they were only getting around 98kW also. Will be interesting to see if/when XPeng fix this, at what max rate can the G6 charge at a V4 supercharger … stay tuned 🙏
I think because they’re 350 kw chargers designed for Teslas not for 800 volt non Tesla cars

Yes all Tesla Superchargers are CCS2 in Australia but you have to check the Tesla app to see whether the location is open access or Tesla only

So excited for this series. Enjoyed my test drive of the G6 (am a MY owner) as tech really impressed me but I found the drive a bit.. unresponsive and floaty? Even toying with the steering I’d say the hardest steering option was still probably closer to “standard” in a Tesla.
Joy said the same thing ... she likes the stiffness of the Model Y steering column whereas the Xpeng even in Sport mode is too loose for her liking
@ yes, couldn’t agree more Joy! Is this something that’s updatable via software? Or a hard coded thing in the drive dynamics? Not a car head so I don’t know 🤷♂️
I’d say the steering column is still mostly mechanical although if the steering stiffness can be adjusted from the infotainment screen there would be a software component that can be potentially tweaked for sensitivity levels

Once the G6 can access the SC network then it’ll be fine between Sydney and Melbourne. It just means you may have to make one more stop cf LR
Hi Tom! Great to see a golf driver fits in the boot. Do you think a full bag of irons could fit diagonally? Many EVs have limited boot space, so I’m looking for one that can at least accommodate a bag of irons, with my driver riding up front in the passenger seat.
I’d say it’d be easy enough to fit a bag of irons - quite a roomy boot

great job guys. Joy adds a little extra to these videos. Xpeng will sort out the Tesla issue, hopefully not with a part conversion like your Seal. Also it is frustrating with the charging situation in Australia currently. But things will get better. We just need one of the big guys to step up and invest. Even if it is one of the Petrol companies. Pivot to offer some better/fast EV charging solutions. in 5-10 (more like 10) i can picture a few European style charging plaza's along the SYD-MEL route. 50-60 different types of chargers.

Watch from 21:06 where I go through the native trip planning. In fact as I get deeper into the trip I start to trust the car’s nav and range estimator more and more. Also watch Part 2: Mel to Syd where we use the native nav a lot more - that’s the beauty of doing these long drives: you learn to trust the car👍

EV manufacturers do not exploit all of the unique advantages of an EV - V2L or better still V2G for example.
The Xpeng G6 efficiency appears to stand out above the crowd.
In my personal check list for selecting my next EV LFP chemistry is not negotiable, so the G6 is off the list.
I was a little concerned when I saw 115km/h on the displays...can they book you on that evidence? (personally I think we should join the rest of the world and have a top speed limit of 130km/h).

Charging infrastructure in a country where investment risk appetite is anaemic, will always lag EV adoption by a country mile. Thankfully we have organisations like the NRMA etc.
Glad you enjoyed it. The speedo seems to be calibrated slower than true GPS eg Waze or Google Maps … at the car’s speedo of 115kph, Waze would consistently only show 110kph 🤷♂️

Another quick one. On the weekend at Bunnings I saw they sell portable chargers. Not sure how much charge they held but they werent bulky at all. Like a jerry can but electricity. Nice.
If you’re referring to a mobile connector then yes they are handy: plug into any 10A power point and you’ll usually get 10kph of charge. Slow but it’ll get you out of trouble eventually

Crazy there is no frunk considering I watched reviews of the EV3 from Europe and EV5 from NZ earlier tonight and both have frunks plus considering how close to Tesla it is that they didn't design it to have a frunk even if it is only enough for a type-2 cable and abit extra even my lower spec Kona(2024 version) has one. I personally need some buttons/dials though particularly for commonly used features one reason I love Hyundai/Kia. Would be interesting to know if Xpeng has what I call the deadzone between the footrest and the brake pedal to put a foot and stretch out the leg that little bit more. Hopefully they fix the supercharger issue as well as it sounds like it's a global issue and they need to get it fixed urgently.
I’m not too concerned about the frunk … as handy as it is, if I’m being honest with myself I reckon the only times I’ve opened the bonnet of my Seal is to show it for my UA-cam vids 😂
But yes if XPeng can offer an OEM frunk retrofit as an accessory it would be the icing on the cake. Along with the Supercharger fix
@@LudicrousFeed I will be honest I have a frunk in my Kona the only thing in it is my Type-2 cable which I have only used once as a test only to see if I can actually get almost 11kW which I could. The Supercharger fix is definitely needed. Those RACV chargers I suspect they went cheap and only put in 50kW as max on those Kempower units they need to up them to 300kW so each car can get 150kW (if they can take it).
Good real world review! I can’t find anywhere any reference to G6 turning circle. For everyday driving this is a big issue. Skodas for example are amazing. I can u turn where many cars have to a 3 point. This type of info from many of the manufacturers is pretty scant.

Also as we’ve experienced over the 2 days these videos were shot, if you road trip a lot in a non-Tesla EV: my strong advice to you is to buy a LR vehicle if your budget allows for it. Unless the DC network drastically improves in this country, you need the redundancy in case you get stuck with a broken charger or whatever emergency you may be confronted with on the Hume
I also tried the tesla supercharging 2 days with my BYD Seal, and failed as well, tried for 30 mins, while I saw another Atto 3 working well with it. So annoying.

No powered roof blind so I would definitely look for an aftermarket shade. SR means you'd probably have to factor in minimum 3 stops although I'm happy to be proven wrong

if Joy likes the Xpeng G6, TrueEV/XpengAU should sell a heavily discounted brand-new 2025-built TeslaSupercharger-working RHD Xpeng G6 to her, and the 2023 blue-paint Tesla Model Y can be sold. XpengAU will sell quite a lot of RHD G6’s just from seeing 1-2 videos per week on here by an actual owner of it (not a 3 month / 6 month lend, if a lend the viewers will think “oh they don’t really own it, not sure I want to buy one myself and take the risk with a new brand”) seeing an owners G6 videos regularly it will assure the audience that you actually own one and will see you taking it to UltraTune once year / once-two-yearly etc
I think even if it’s discounted, people will still say it’s being partially sponsored which is fair. To give a decent opinion I think it has to be purchased at full price (or at least within the usual boundaries of negotiation by a normal buyer)

I actually found the AC too cold after a while even with 39 deg C ambient temp! I had to ramp it up to 24 internally

Trust me when I say the AC in the Chinese cars are calibrated to a higher “normal”. I usually have my BYD Seal set at 24 whereas in our Model Y (and every other Tesla I’ve ever driven) it’s set to 21
@@LudicrousFeed I believe it's due to the heat rejection capability of the sun roof. Tesla has no (or negligible) heat rejection, while the G6 has 98.5% heat rejection. So the Tesla is trying to cool the car as it is heated by the roof.

34:19 they need to look at the petrol car major route - Wilton 2571 / Pheasants Nest NSW 2574 ..to.. Craigieburn VIC 3064, and on ‘the roadside’ of this route every 150km or 175km they NEED to install a site of minimal 14 EVSE fast-stations (7 sharing which means 14 cables) that are undercover, so bEV drivers can pull over and charge, than having to detour off the petrol car normal major route

That charging speed is why non LFP still has a great future, at least until the so-called next gen LFP starts coming onto the market as most LFP are painfully slow at changing, including BYD even with very large batteries they still do not charge a constant fast speed. And good to see manufacturers can make the nanny systems non intrusive.

@LudicrousFeed Lots of non 800v charges still have fast charging speeds, our old EV6 would charge at an average 170kw till 77% and it seems the Xpeng is even faster right up to 90%. 800v chargers are not really needed. We have a few 300kw 800v chargers, but the 150kw and 180kw 400v the EV6, still takes advantage of the charging speeds. I believe in our neck of the woods the biggest supplier of DC charging locations have abandoned putting in 300kw 800v chargers and now are only installing 150kw, as still most EV including brand new ones are still very slow at charging with the exception of a few

Teslas only maintain their advertised peak charging rates for a short time. Assuming you have a 800V charger, BYD Seals (82.5kWh battery versions) have a comparable 20-80% average charging rate to a Tesla with NMC batteries.
MODEL Y "Juniper" will have CATL LFP SHENXING and SHENXING PLUS and it will bring TESLA back to number one. CATL will save TESLA they have the batteries that TESLA failed to produce.

The first entrant into a new industry well before the rest can have such an advantage if investing early, and the prime example here is the Tesla Supercharger network. When Tesla has 12 chargers in Yass, is building a new charging station at Coolac, has another 6 chargers at the Dog on a Tuckerbox Gundagai stop, and 9 charges at Holbrook, why would a third party such as Chargefox or Evie Networks, or any of the petrol stations for that matter, invest in anything more than 2 chargers at a site between Goulburn and Albury when their competitor has so many chargers and has the cash balance and cash flow to fund further supercharger stations.

@@LudicrousFeed I reckon there's a fair few similarities here comparing the Australian supercharger market structure with the Australian airline market. Qantas is the incumbent, every one of its competitors has gone bust, it invested early and as a result has a market share of 2/3. New competitors (Virgin after existing administration) go for the most profitable markets first (MEL-SYD-BNE). Essentially the only competition Qantas has on country flights is the Commonwealth Govt bankrolling Rex. So economically these third party providers should build out in the most profitable spots first, and this ain't 300+km away from the nearest capital city. I'd be surprised if Tesla's share of the supercharger market wasn't around 2/3. Just like with Rex in country areas, we really need govts to bankroll 80%+ of the costs of installing superchargers in spots 300+kms away from capital cities IMHO.

Gee, this looks impressive. It is like X-Peng took a Model Y, listened to the customer complaints, and released a 'fixed' version. My only concern is the viability of the company here in Oz. With all the new Chinese models now competing for that 100 000 EV sales per year, who will be around in five years? Even Tesla must be a question mark although it has the inside running.

There’s so many new Chinese EV brands coming out and I get them all mixed up. Since there’s so many new brands coming here, it’s a bit of a gamble buying any of the new brands as they’re disproven in Australia. So you don’t know how long each will last in Australia if the sales are low which wouldn’t surprise me with how few people actually buy EVs now.
Australians are understandably naturally cautious about anything new or foreign so my prediction in 2025 and beyond is that BEV sales will only rise (without intervention) once the rate of new entrants start to stabilise
@ I do think if more cheaper EVs (mostly from China) come to Australia then yeah the adoption rate will go up and I realise there’s a bunch of new options coming this year. But at the same time I wouldn’t expect sales to boom again, mainly because of new hybrid cars from Toyota/Honda and others

I think the Chinese PHEVs will also be very compelling eg BYD Shark 6 and SL6 make a very good case with being able to run almost purely on the electric powertrain in the city (if you charge often enough) while having enough range to satisfy most long drives. Sales in AUSTRALIA are constantly increasing. You cannot go wrong with BYD, ZEEKR or XPENG. BYD is now the world's leading car/truck/bus/battery company, ZEEKR along with POLESTAR and VOLVO and LOTUS are owned by GEELY a huge brand and XPENG is doing very well and licences their tech to legacy brands.
@ well you can go wrong with them. Australia is a brutal climate for BEVs especially ones that are built in and for China. Long term costs are what hold them back with things such as battery replacement which for the Polestar 2 at least costs $50K for the battery alone and doesn’t include labour costs to replace it. So you can actually go very wrong
You really need to start testing how safe the auto pilot systems are on each car. We know the Tesla will bring the car to a complete stop should you fail to keep hold of the steering wheel, but many systems just switch off the lane centre while keeping the set speed. Which of course will not end well. I know Kia is bad for it, and only the very latest Toyota bring you to a safe stop. But would be great to see how many Chinese cars are coming out with a much safer lane keep/centre system

@@LudicrousFeed I am not in Australia, if the two destinations as important as Sydney and Melbourne have that few charging location options, the fault is not in me but in the stars. Three brands already landed in Australia BYD, XPENG and ZEEKR need to understand two vital things 1/ TESLA's Supercharger network sold TESLA cars even to people who almost never use a Supercharger. 2/ Forcing people to DC charge at 42% SOC is not good for charging speed, BMS or overall battery health. All 3 of the fore mentioned Chinese brands have their own charging stations and BYD has major Solar tech too. If they want to sell big in Australia they need to build their networks and of course open to all CCS2 EVs thus an income stream from EVs in general. A win-win. BYD is building a network in Brazil they and the others need to not make that an exception.
@@honesty_-no9he Of course in an ideal world there should be chargers dotted along the highway every 150km so that we don’t have to worry about planning as was my experience driving an Ioniq 5 in the UK in 2024. But unless you are in the car with us at the time, I don’t think it’s fair for you to question why we charged at 42% when you don’t even fully understand the charging landscape in Australia. This is directed not just at you but for any viewer who thinks they could’ve done a better job than us given the circumstances. As you’ve seen in this video, the non-Tesla DC charging infrastructure between Sydney and Melbourne is average at best so we felt it was better to top up at a relatively higher SoC of 42% rather than risk either being stranded or having to drive at 80kph to limp to the next viable DC charger. I hope this explanation clarifies our actions because when you are on the highway, theory goes out the window and you need to make quick decisions using substandard cell connectivity about where to charge next
@@LudicrousFeed I have stopped to charge a few times at Tarcutta -2 x 350kw Evie chargers there. I think you should have easily reached there. Of course if PlugShare indicated it was offline, then Yass was your best option. Evie at Tarcutta and Avenel have both been offline for me before and caused some 0% drives!! ( now I always check PlugShare)

Too risky to import. Just get the Seal Lion 7 from the BYD Dealership in Manila for 2.8M pesos.
The Tesla can be switched onto full self driving not just autonomous driving (X Pilot cruise control) for the whole trip so you don’t touch the steering wheel much
Tesla very similar price and has this main advantage as well as its own supercharger pump network and no servicing costs a heat pump
Also Tesla have regular upgrades through the software and will hold their value better than XPeng as Tesla is a known brand

Slight correction: Tesla vehicles in Australia cannot currently cannot be used in “full self driving” mode as you’ve seen in North America. I’ve driven a Model 3, Model Y and Model S along our highways and you will still need to wiggle the steering wheel every few minutes as part of the well known “Autopilot Nag”. This occurs even if you purchase either EAP or the “FSD” package
As far as I know, there are no plans by the relevant authorities to permit the use of full self-driving in Australia yet. No point buying this option from Tesla or any other carmaker.
XPeng is no slouch when it comes to OTA updates. It's one of the most frequent in the industry.

It's so sad to see Australia is where Europe was 10 years ago with EV charging. Yes, glad you found the Woolies chargefox but mate why the fuck do they waste time, energy and money to install 50KW (41 of which you were only getting) chargers. That's really not something useful. How long does one stay at Woolies? 10-20 minutes max? So you'd get like a 10KW top up... Nice but erm yea... if you have an 80+KW battery that just isn't much. Those will inevitably get ripped out in x years from now and replaced with proper chargers. So why not just put those in today

Am I the only one who looks at this with horror? Phone apps and scrolling through screens while you should be watching the road. Unable to charge at Tesla points when you were told you can. Range anxiety and sitting around waiting to charge. I just want to get in a car drive. I have enough problems without buying a car that comes with an entire set of new things to worry about. I don’t want to become a computer nerd/ electrical engineer just to get to the grocery store.

I think 3 is extremely unlikely - why sabotage their own sales. 2 is possible but in all honesty I don’t think I’m important enough for them to care - besides I have nothing to hide. Number 1: this is one of the critical issues that the new comers need to deal with to gain the trust of the Australian car buying public
Given most of our trade is with China - Australia would be in deep deep trouble if there was war with China. Not least because all our petrol reserves are in the US. But our leaders definitely have a mid 20C vibe in terms of our strategic international partnerships. Parts would be a problem across all drive trains as presumably shipping would be under threat. Much much better to have an EV in the extremely unlikely event of a war with China.
