    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    I bought this last fall at a wine and sprities festival in Bedford, PA, and I can personally say that this Peated Bourbon is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!! I am going to be ordering 4 more bottles shortly. This has become my favorite bourbon... period. I agree that in the end they stopped trying to put it into a classification and compare with others. Just drink it! I have, and cant wait to get more. Please give this a try, and I doubt you will be dissapointed.

    I'm so glad I found you guys. Last year I decided to go on a quest to find "My" whiskey. And now I have found the wisdom that may never happen. Now to Liberty Pole peated bourbon. I did not know what peated meant. I opened the bottle smelled it a bit. Liked it. Tasted it and was taken back. I did not expect that at all and after a few seconds I smiled to myself and said aloud 😈"I like it". I look forward to more of your videos. Thank you. Also trying to support all of my home state distilleries during this time. And from now on.

    Gotta disagree with Rex here. The Whiskey Rebellion is a great story and woefully unknown to most people. Damn. Now I want to see a Drunk History version of it... (or did they make one already?)

    The more I drink of it, the more I love it!
    As the bottle opens, the toasty and smokey oaky qualities really start to shine.
    These were my notes from the first time I had tasted Liberty Pole Peated (and I've consumed much more since then!!!):
    Nose:
    Vegetable glycerin and roasted corn. BBQ pork ribs, KY style, pit smoked in a spicy vinegar-based sauce.
    Taste:
    Medium mouthfeel with a slight slickness. Slight cayenne spice (heat) is noticeable immediately and throughout, but not intense.
    Deep into the drink comes oak-smoked green apples, Guatemalan coffee, vanilla extract.
    Leathery tannins. Texture quickly becomes meaty.
    Salted pretzels emerge, showcasing a minerality and toasted malt profile.
    Finish:
    Heavy on the back palate, with those leathery tannins heavy and clinging, satisfying between sips. Gentle warmth.
    White pepper flavor and after-aroma.
    Overall:
    An intriguing drink with noticeable peat qualities, though in a different fashion that the Islay you may be used to... yet equally savory!
    The fresh flavors of a spirit, with balancing sweetness and added flavor from that heritage Bloody Butcher corn, with a new way of peat on top.
    This is fun and approachable.

  • @AlexSzokolyai
    @AlexSzokolyai 6 років тому +5

    The pretzels broke you!! :P
    Nose: 17/20
    Caraway seed, butter, charcoal, and partially-burnt logs from an open fire doused by morning rain. There’s a noticeable rye spice, and the unique earthy character of the Bloody Butcher corn. Heavy oak toast notes. No medicinal qualities, but the peat mingles with other earthy and smokey aromas very harmoniously. Inviting!
    Initial Taste: 12/15
    Bloody Butcher corn is so noticeable, earthy and robust. All of that caraway seed is very loud in the mix, but balanced by a darker quality of malty sweetness than your typical bourbon. On first crack, you can taste the iodine and bandage from the peat, but it’s so well integrated with deep maltiness and toasty barrel char, you could miss it if you’re a peat-head.
    Body/Mouthfeel: 7/10
    Medium in body, but a sip easily becomes chewy and puckering, tannic, stimulating all areas of the palate noticeably and urging salivation. This is an experience, quite pleasant if you enjoy that type of thing (and I do, though many may find it a bit jarring).
    Taste: 14/15
    Chewing it, the corn sweetness we know to look for presents itself, but again, alongside a deep and dark caramel malt syrup that is decadent. This decadence keeps in check a fair quantity of aromatic spice as well as heat. The depth of the peat influence is sooty on the mid-palate. Certainly robust, but undoubtedly well-coordinated between bourbon base, flavor grains, barrel char, and peat, of which all display themselves proudly and loudly in exemplary fashion.
    Finish: 17/20
    Long and medium-dry. Here is where we notice the oil, as the corn sweetness and oaky char tannins and smoky phenols cling to the tongue, especially the back, begging for a gulp, but at the same time continuing to please the palate and contribute aroma and flavor well after consumption.
    Value: 8/10
    For in the $50-60 range, many might opt for another product… except there are not many like this product on the market! That being said, you’d pay similar or more for other Islay Scotches or American single malts. Considering this, and how this is unique in any case, it’s certainly a value.
    Overall: 10/10
    It could be bias of my personal preference for smoke and spice, but what touches me about this drink is how the sweetness and dark maltiness interacts with those qualities to yield a drink absolutely full and complete in profile and addictive in quality of its balance. It’s my most-frequented bottle, even winning out against staples I hold in the utmost esteem, like Laphroaig 10 and Russel’s Reserve. Choose it if you like bourbon, if you like smoky, and if you like bold flavor-it’s unapologetic and screams “freedom” somehow.

    All I want to know is what got omitted from Daniel's story. I feel like there's a lot more. It's like the scene in the Breakfast Club when Judd Nelson is crawling through the ceiling telling a joke and then falls through the ceiling before the punch line. I've been waiting over thirty years to find out what happened to the duck and now I'll have to imagine what could possibly have been so funny and too risky to say.

    Man I love those long stupid stories.
    Reminds me of a time when I have just recently acquired my whisky “grasshopper” (my good friend and classmate back in medschool), and while we were having a drink I got too excited and gave him an entire lecture on whisky production just from the top of my head and even gave an intro to the different regions. Needless to say, this tired him out and towards the end of the night he told me, “next time, just tell me about the whisky we’re drinking specifically. I almost felt like I was back in med school when we were listening to long boring lectures while we were drunk.”

    Rex, light a match in the glass, you don't have to heat it up. They burn the oxygen out of the glass, then quickly place it on the skin. This creates a vacuum, and the glass sucks your skin/muscle up inside. Give it a try during a review for us! That sure would be interesting.

  • @tanisha5709

    Would have been interesting to see you try to mix something heavily peated into a classic bourbon to see how that would work out and compare it to the Liberty Pole, but you'd probably have to give Chad the rest of this bottle to make it up for him. I enjoyed the story though! I have strep so I was not drinking with you gentlemen today but I did find a caramel bourbon ice cream that is tiding me over well enough while I recover.

    Greetings! Daniel and Rex, Somm and GLORIOUS MOOCH! I have learned a lot and love your videos.
    I am new to whiskey and I only have right now "the Classic Jameson" and I greatly enjoy it. My goal is to get the "Fantastic Four" of whiskeys, a Irish, a Scotch, a Bourbon and a Japanese, for Starters!! My Whiskey Foundation if you will. I am soon to get married and I am going to buy a Bourbon and Scotch in honor of the occasion and being a close Neighbor in Oklahoma and agreeing with you completely on the taste of the Jameson I come seeking your wise counsel!
    I want a nice classic Kentucky Bourbon and I want a barrel busting Scotch!! And I am not afraid of a nut kicker, a Jameson was my first whiskey but my first drink was a "Crozan 151 aged Rum" yes 151 as in 75% alcohol!!! Let me say that it had great flavor but IT WAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING SHORT OF GETTING HIT BY A FIRETRUCK!! Nevertheless I enjoyed it and still do.
    And if you will join me with a Jameson in a toast for my special occasion I will be forever grateful! "Here's to Love, Laughter, Good Company and Great Whiskey!!"

    Rex and Daniel - seems like many members of the tribe are having magnificent babies. This community already has the best ceremonies and traditions... why not add one more. We need a MAGNIFICENT BABY ceremony. Maybe there’s a specific whiskey always associated with a birth? Along with (of course) a song to go with it?
    When my son was born 6 weeks ago, i would pass the time late at night watching Vault and Biscuit videos. After chatting with some other MBs, seems like this is pretty common for new parents in the tribe. Seems only fitting that a ceremony be established.
    ... I also realize that this is my first UA-cam comment and I probably shouldn’t be making demands.... but I thought Rex would appreciate my attempt to speak “for the people.”
    Cheers gents. Keep up the good work. Thanks from all the new fathers you’ve entertained at the wee hours of the night.... and who you’ve inspired to spend their hard earned money on whiskey instead of diapers for their newborn children.

    Hey Daniel and Rexx, Greetings from New York City!
    First time subscriber, and commenter. Friday, I was with a group of friends, after a night of geekery, we decided to go to our local watering hole. A wonderful place called Windfall tavern. That night I achieved my first successful mooching! A woman the bar was watching the NCAA basketball tournament, Rooting very loud for Syracuse University (they lost by the way.) Anyway, the woman said if they win, she would buy us and the bartender a shot. Anyway, I was sipping on a single of Bullet bourbon (one of my favorites btw). So, the game ends, the woman pretty upset, decides to buy shots anyway. That night, I had a glass of Jamison cask mates. Rexx, *kneels before you* What is thy bidding my master?

    Geology joke for Rex.......
    A geology professor is out in the field with a group of students. One of the students sees an interesting rock and picks it up. The student scratches his head in frustration and finally asks the professor what kind of rock he has. The professor doesn’t miss a beat and says “That’s a leverite!” The student says “A leverite? I’ve never heard of that type of rock!” The professor takes the rock out of the students hand and drops it on the ground and says “ I told you it’s a leverite.......as in “leave-her-right” here.”

    • @ericschwab409
      @ericschwab409 6 років тому +1

      Geoff Gaebe Laddie is NICE, Auchentoshen is not as complex..... it’s sort of meh (my humble opinion). Avoid Aberfeldy....too expensive and tastes like crap

    • @geoffgaebe8354
      @geoffgaebe8354 6 років тому

      That pretty much sums up my feelings on the two. The Auchentoshen wasn't bad, it just wasn't interesting. It was cheap (by NYC standards) so I don't regret buying it, but wouldn't re-buy. The Laddie was just happiness in a Glencairn.

    • @ericschwab409
      @ericschwab409 6 років тому

      Geoff Gaebe Yep! Beware, I learned the hard way that there are a lot of “blah” single malts out there on the market that were (or are) also used in blends. They are used in blends because they are like a musical instrument that can only play one or two notes ( not very complex or interesting).. On their own they are at best boring and even can be just down right bad (IMHO). When blended, the resulting mix is acceptable to even good. Aberfeldy is one of these lame whiskies. It’s used in the Dewars White Label blend, but to me on its own it tasted like burnt rubber and never got better. Some people say it’s really sweet smelling and tastes like cotton candy. There are people who love some of these whiskies, but because they are frequently charging a modest to healthy amount for their crappy whisky I take exception. Buyer be ware is what I’m getting at.......watch, read, listen to reviews of whiskies before dropping cash on something that might be detestable. I’ve even started trying tasting whiskies at bars neat and with a little water later on instead of buying whole bottles.....it’s lots cheaper. Oh, and by the way, good luck finding consensus on every whisk(e)y. It’s a matter of taste (and some people have more taste than others). Lol! 🤪

  • @WhiskyLeather
    @WhiskyLeather 6 років тому +1

    Hey guys, can you talk about hip flasks on an episode? Do you use them yourselves, and if so do you condone using them to take the more ‘up market’ whiskies with you, or do you think the flavour would be ruined or made metallic-y? I’ve only ever really used them to take cheap stuff to parties in the past. Also, I like to add a dash of water to my whiskies. Is it a dumb idea to add water to a whiskey in a hip flask hours in advance of drinking? (p.s. I have recently started delving deeper into the world of whiskey and you guys are teaching me a lot without the snobbery you sometimes find, so thank you for helping me on my whiskey enlightenment! )

    • @ericschwab409
      @ericschwab409 6 років тому +1

      Jay Harding Ethanol is corrosive so if you use a metal flask make sure it’s stainless steel and do not leave whisk(e)y in the flask for long periods. I would avoid plastic flasks because the plastic can affect the flavor of the alcohol. Also make sure the flask seals well and doesn’t leak....nothing worse that loosing good whisk(e)y or wearing it instead of drinking it. I’d rather just take a small glass bottle and fill that instead of a flask but that’s just my preference. If you are driving somewhere, put the flask in the trunk or someplace that you can’t reach easily. Cops love it when you have a flask on you and they think you are driving drunk. Once the flask is empty, rinse it out with warm water and allow it to dry. Be safe!

    Wonder if you guys could at some point make a video going into some depth about whiskey awards, cause I certainly see it flaunted around a lot promotionally, this whiskey won this! and that! at this place I've never heard of or that one.
    Would love some know-how on what awards are the most, respectable.

    Re: cupping, so long as you can heat up the interior of the cup (lighter, lit cotton ball, etc) and quickly place it on your skin to create an airtight seal you can for sure cup your nipple. I won't recommend using a Glencairn though, the glass might be too thin...

    Hey guys, I found you through the modern rogue (I'm sure you get that a lot) but I wanted your opinion. I'm a junior in college and have never had alcohol in my life. Not even a sip of my dad's beer or anything. Nor have I ever had the desire to drink, but after coming across your videos I have developed a fascination with whiskey. The history, the different ways it is made, everything. Now I am contemplating trying it out but am apprehensive because of my inexperience with alcohol. Unlike other college age people I don't plan on drinking in excess, maybe a taste every so often. Do you think I should take the leap or should I just hold off for a bit?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  6 років тому

      If you're of legal age in your area, I'd start by trying it at a bar before you go buying a bottle. Don't be afraid to have in a cocktail first, or add ice/water. Or wait if it makes you nervous. The best whiskey is consumed with friends and family, so it might be nice to wait to have a whisky partner to join you on the journey.

    Ever considered Haig Club? it could make an interesting video. They are fairly new and growing popular in the UK, they make a single grain scotch which I love but I've heard many compare it to spicey water, could be a hit or miss.

      Eric Schwab nah it’s Scotch, distilled in Scotland and named after the House of Haig not the place haha, it is an odd one because it specifically is labelled as a mixer but I’ve gotta say is pretty good neat

    • @ericschwab409
      @ericschwab409 6 років тому

      Harry Sinclair Interesting. Haig is or was a huge whisky producer in the past. Sir Douglas Haig (WW1 fame) was one of the distilling Haigs. I looked at the largest liquor store in Denver and I couldn’t find your whisky. Glenlivet Founders Reserve has also been marketed as a mixer as has Deanston Virgin Oak. I think the hipsters are in to cocktails in a serious way so the Scotch producers are trying to cater to that. Kind of sad in some ways.

    If i remember correctly you guys like the Glenfiddich 12 year old right? Have you had the opportunity to taste the IPA experiment? I was able to get one earlier this week and damn, it is really good. I was a bit afraid that the taste of hops would be to powerful and take over it too much but to my satisfaction it really blended in well with the overall taste resulting in a wonderfull whisky. This is easy an whisky that I would recommend for people to try. Also if you get your hands on it how does it compare to the 12 year old (sadly I don't have one of those at home right now to do a side by side comparison)?

    First, don’t listen to Rex. It was a good story Daniel. Second, for a great peated Bourbon you must try J. Riddle from Two James Distillery in Detroit. Finally, I have been noticing lately that Rex is following the path of Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison in The Doors. Look at the early episodes and the hair is nicely cut, the beard trimmed, and he is wearing nice button downed shirts. As the episodes progress the hair gets long, beard unkempt, untucked T shirts and maybe a bit more belly as well - sorry Rex, though Jim may be proud. Ride the snake.

      A Blue Quaker Buffalo Trace or Angel’s Envy are nice. Makers Mark is really nice too. Buffalo Trace and Makers Mark are going to be easier to obtain if you are in Australia. We have hundreds of craft whiskies here in the US worth trying, but they aren’t widely distributed outside their home state or region. Go on a whiskey tour of the US sometime......you might never go home! There are 90 distilleries in my state of Colorado alone,
