A full slo-mo breakdown of Kelly Slater's pop-up.
There are several distinct and crucial aspects to a fluid pop-up, so have a watch, and discover what you may be doing wrong, and flailing around with your pop-ups.
If you want a thorough process of learning technique, theory, skill practice, and surf-specific fitness for the pop-up, check out my Perfect Pop Up program, the link is above.
This video is a classic. Explanation wise as well as the videos. Covers all the essentials
Thank you so much! This really answers some questions that came up during the learning process in surfing and helps me to work on the key elements of my pop up!!! Please continue like that! It’s great to feel your engagement and enthusiasm🏄🏼♀️🤙
thanks! I'll do more reviews I think in the future. I enjoyed making this one, and people seem to find them informative.
Awesome content, man. Been watching your stuff for years and just signed up for the surf foundations course!
legend! thanks for following the journey. hit me up with any questions as you go through the courses
Nice work. Great vid.
brilliant vid bro! thanks so much - love how you break down the biomechanics so well
Another thing to mention is both surfers perfect timing of knowing exactly when to pop up , which comes with experience/confidence , hopeless trying to pop up when the board has started travelling down the wave and the same when your held at the top for to long. Timing and that strong paddle technique helps a lot. Great to see it broken down the way you do , great video.
exactly right. on trips we are OFTEN trying to get clients to FEEL the glide. feel the glide and then get to your feet. glad to hear you dig the video!
thank you i plan to do your programs ! look forward to them
please reach out if you have any questions regarding the programs
Great, great video! Can you breakdown a little more of the technique behind that first explosive extension Kelly performs to position himself in the barrel after he makes the drop? So subtle but really sets him up for an absolutely epic ride. Thanks
Thanks (again!) The importance of watching the wave while paddling in is something I overlook (get it?), but will definitely work on next time I get out as I am sure that it makes a HUGE difference. Love the details in your talks. Am enrolled in your Surf Athlete Program and am loving it! Mahalo! Marty
"overlook"... haha! clever martin, I got a laugh out of that. thank you. stoked to hear you're enjoying the Surf AThlete program!
Looking down the line is very good advice. The first time someone told me that I went surfing and could catch larger waves than I usually had ride. It almost takes away the fear of the pop up on large waves and it helps you trust your pop up more.
OMG I burst out laughing when you said "poo-man stance". I just got some recent pictures of myself surfing and that is exactly what I'm doing. This video gave me some ways to correct that. Hopefully adjusting my hand position will help orient my torso 'down the line'. Thanks Cris!
glad to hear you've had some aha' moments Mark. There's some good blogs on my website regarding this and some new UA-cam videos coming out soon regarding an optimal surf stance. surfstrengthcoach.com Thanks for the support.
Thank you so much bro
the thing is... its easy to pop up when you're behind a high energy wave going down... what if you live in southern california ie huntington beach (granted there are times these waves start slow then barrels real fast) it's hard-er to pop up on a slow moving lower energy wave
yes, I would completely agree with you, and in situations like that you need to make sure you're riding the proper equipment.
Im so glad you shared that!I find it easier to pop up in bigger surf.I hate slow beach beak!
That’s why longboards are used when surfing slow moving waves
thanks!
Awesome
Boss where can I find your app? Appreciate your work btw 👌🏾💯 Building my Pop Up …It sucks lol
Thanks 🙏
My challenge is getting the front knee close enough to my chest so that my front foot lands far enough forward. Would doing hip flexor exercises help? I do lots of pushup pluses, and then in the upper hold position, try to bring and hold off the ground alternating feet as close to between my hands as possible. (As I side note, I am wearing a 5.5/4 wetsuit and thick booties, so that adds to the challenge, but still ... no excuses!)
Always goes so comically wrong for me at this time of year when I have to wear neoprene boots. My okayish pop-up (sorry. walk up) ends with me tripping over my front foot which has planted itself far too early. Shall have to invest in the perfect popup program (that or emigrate to a country where I no longer need boots).
Sometimes it can help to use less wax when wearing boots. The grip on the boots plus a very heavy wax job can make it too grippy and hard to make foot adjustments. Also, check you’re boots aren’t too big. I’ll wear a bit too small than bit too big so there’s no excess getting in the way when popping up.
move to a warm water location! haha! in all seriousness, make sure that hip flexion is adequate. the booty drag is quite common, and can be exacerbated when range of motion is limited, or movement is restricted with a heavier wetsuit
Use a tight split toe bootie they are the better ones.
I simply adore the 'poo man' description! 'No one wants to surf like they are taking a dump'!!! 😂😂😂😂 I wish i wasnt poo man!! Great tutorial. Subbed.
cheers Brian! thank you. check out the Surf Athlete app (free in App Store and google play). we'll start uploading content to the app that isn't available on UA-cam
The backhand surfer looks like Lakey Peterson
I reckon you may be right!
Great break down, thanks! UA-cam comment and kook behaviour dig duly noted. This particular comment was created at a desk. Sad emoji is at least sitting on a yoga ball.
ha! legend! Thanks ken. yoga ball youtube critics... I can take that :)
I shut down as soon as i heard the term pop up... its called getting to ya feet or get to ya feet .i dont see any pop , in slater at 2 min mark .
if you'd watch the video or any other portion sof my content, you'd see that I don't refer to it as a pop up mechanically either. i use the term because that's what people know, but when we refer to the actual movement mechanics it's a run up, walk up, slide through... whatever you want to call it. judged that video too fast because of simple word buddy! i'd suggest you take a look at some of my other "pop up" breakdowns and you'll see the nuance of language.
Dig it.
thanks john, hope you got some beneficial insight
@@SurfStrengthCoach Definitely. And the comments and your replies add a lot, too!
Lakey i reckon Chris
except Lakey is regular foot. Perhaps the clip is reversed.
The woman in the clip is going left backside, so she is indeed a regularfoot. So possibly it is Lakey.
Backhand is easier for me to draw my line, initially.
interesting. is it because of a pig dog action? Personally I find just about everyting easier on my forehand.
@@SurfStrengthCoach Yeah. Hollow beachies.
The audio is terrible on this video. Hard to watch. Good info though.
old video... got a mic since then.
