Lovely words for Codeine! I saw them at the Numero Twenty palace theater show. I was headbanging like hell. So heavy! I have tickets to see them at soda bar in San Diego can't wait!! Also seeing Pile there later this year!!
@@Balls2YourMom That show last night was soooooo good, also Winter is incredible!! I had been listening to her music for a little while so when I saw she was opening for Codeine I was ecstatic! I drove down from LA, I would never pass on that line up!
Imagine a hippie listening to The White Birch, it’d be enough to change even them. It has absolutely no hope or light whatsoever, just the way I like it.
Frigid Stars is one of my favorite albums. It’s so depressing, but you can’t stop listening to it. I love the jagged guitar tones and minimal approach.
Your videos are excellent, and your knowledge is superb. I have been a fan of the slow core genre for nearly 3 decades and you have managed to expose me to bands from that era that I didn't know about, or have ignored until now. Thank you! Would really like to see a story of Sebadoh and a Will Oldham one too. Keep up the great work!
great video, easily my favourite band of all time. that lost album you mentioned which they recorded before barely real is actually got remastered and was released last month, it's called dessau and the recording's great. i have no idea why they scrapped it
Wow. I am completely amazed by this content. I would totally be making this a year ago if I had your skill level and drive. At a quick glance I see you also have a video on bedhead. Bedhead, codeine, Slint, and galaxy 500 was all I was listening to a year ago. Great content you earned a subscriber.
@@TheMusicNarrative Ooooh, Down Colorful Hill from RHP is such a great piace of music history, can't even describe how many time Medicine Bottle and Japanese To English made me company during bad times! I know they're pretty famous but I'd like if you'd made a video about Low, I mean, they're Low, they are the slowcore! Also, I think Arab Strap are such an underappreciated band and Philophobia it's one of the best albums ever made, it's a shame they do not have the love they deserve :( Also, my all time favorite is Carissa's Wierd, can't even describe how much they stab my soul every damn time...
@@coffee5736 I highly suggest to follow Low on Instagram if you use it, their name is "lowtheband" and every firday they do a lives called: "It's Friday I'm In Low", where Alan and Mimi play various songs, it's quite amazing to see them play. Anyway, I can't even describe how unique Carissa's Wierd are, seriously, they're too much for my soul sometimes.
@@OysterBoyo Yeah I actually caught a few of those back when I had Instagram, they sound flawless on live recordings! Carissa's Wierd are criminally underrated, even for a slowcore band. Their vocal harmonies and instrumentation is like nothing else, and those string parts are just beautiful. After seeing your comment mentioning them, I went straight to listen to Ugly But Honest again.
The fact that Codeine's most popular song is a cover of a Joy Division song is sort of annoying to me. Like imagine if Swans' cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was their most popular song. It just doesn't express how great their songwriting was. Codeine created monolithic sounds, depressing and catchy grunge songs slowed down to a pace that truly reflects the lethargy of overwhelming sadness.
They also played Europe in 2012. Had the privelege of seeing them at Atp London 2012. I don't think The White Birch is any more minimal than Frigid Stars or Barely Real. It's just better produced. The sound is the same. And I don't think they were remotely influenced by slint. They were contemporaries, formed and done when they put out records at the same time. But great video, covering these bands 👍
Daniil Zadorozhnyy I would assume so. Maybe the bands knew each other and Codeine requested to cover the song before it’s official release? Or maybe a demo was recorded long before the album version? Not quite sure, but Seam definitely made the song first.
Yea this jarred with me, cos Frigid Stars came out a couple of years before Headsparks, but they were mates (Steve and Sooyoung, I'm guessing so cos Steve did sound for Bitch Magnet in Europe) so I guess the song could have been floating around for a while. But codeine recorded it first. I always thought the Seam version was a cover of Codeine. But the transition of Bitch Magnet to Seam was pretty quick I thought? And New Years doesn't sound like a Bitch Magnet song, far from it. So I'm confused. Maybe someone can solve this fascinating mystery. Please don't ask me to dig out my old cds. Chortle chortle
They are on Tour right now in 2023. Great Band. Great Video
i can never finish your videos because i end up on spotify listening to the band
I saw their reunion show and someone yelled one more song, and he just said "we haven't played in 18 years" and left.
That’s hilarious lmfao
These are great, you should do one on Karate and/or Chavez. Both incredibly underrated yet sonically important groups.
karate is absolutely amazing!

shit was legendary. i was born in 94 and the last time they played in sd@@FellDestroyedMusic
Wow. Codeine, RHP, Bedhead. This channel is great!

What I find even more remarkable is that it is void of remorse and self-pity or anger. Very rare co-occurence.
Great video. Codeine was a great band. Subtle music with epic consequences.
Going to see them play this week!
My favorite band of all time. Glad to finally see someone do a video about them.
I also highly recommend the reissue's liner notes for anyone looking for any further reading
This needed to be done! Thank you for making this and sharing!

Great, great, great band.
Steve was one of my best friends in Junior High and High School in the Seattle area. It's pronounced Immer-Var btw...
hell yeah, thank you for uploading this.

This video is amazing man! Good work!
Found them out from elvis depressedly .Such an amazing band
Great video, is amazing to see someone talking about Codeine, they're so unique ❤️
Hope you'll talk about other slowcore bands!
Ooijennn Thanks for the comment! I’m covering Red House Painters next. I think they’re definitely in a similar alley! Glad you enjoyed the video.

I've been listening to codeine for years nice to see that theres a niche for everything on youtube, loved your vid and best of luck
Did The White Birch name themselves after the Codeine album?
Love your videos so much!

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is the most popular Swans did. Nobody knows "Celebrity Lifestyle" from radio.
John plays an ESP TE, which is a telecaster copy, just a small note
Barley Legal is a phenomenal album!!

love them
Codeine were/are one of my favorite bands. But the concert reviews on that 1993 tour where they opened for Mazzy Star were definitely *not* glowing.
Doug Scharin played in 1 or 2 albums of ENABLERS. Best drummer
Love codeine
Was "New Year's" by Seam released a few years before it was on their 1992 album since Frigid Stars was 1990?

GARGANTUAN!!!
good video but maybe stop mentioning pitchfork reviews as much. they're still just the press and their opinion is irrelevant.
Horse Jumper of Love got me here 🤘🏾
Karate would be a sick video.
Song in the intro?
awesome to hear someone talking about codeine! i really enjoy these videos you’ve been making
