Thanks, domila. Tuba Skinny have been playing 'Michigander Blues' for a few years. It was composed in 1929 by the great Jabbo Smith. He also composed 'Jazz Battle', which Tuba Skinny often play. I don't suppose many people still need time stamps, but here goes: 00:07 : INTRODUCTION, 4 bars firmly establishing the key of D minor. 00:14 : VERSE, 16 bars (8 + 8). Note: they play the Verse only once. 00:44 : CHORUS (32 bars, a-a-b-a in structure). 01:46 : CHORUS - Craig has fun improvising over the entire 32 bars. NOTE Shaye's signal at 02:28, calling for 'fours', with a thumb telling Barnabus to go first. 02:46 : CHORUS - sure enough, Barnabus and Shaye trade fours over the first 16 bars with interesting rhythmic support; and Shaye signals at 03:14 for ensemble playing from the Middle Eight (and incidentally Shaye's improvisation over the Middle Eight is brilliant). NOTE Shaye's signals at 03:42 (pointing and leg), meaning Max is to start the next Chorus, after first taking a 'break' on bars 31 - 32. 03:47 : CHORUS - Max solos on the first 16 bars; and Todd - instructed by Shaye - takes the the second sixteen (and what a fine lyrical treatment he also gives to the Middle Eight), with trombone, clarinet and trombone support on the final eight. 04:47 : *Second half only* of CHORUS (out of shot, Shaye must have given them an instruction to play from the Middle Eight). They bring it to an end with a rallentando. The Middle Eight, by the way, which lends itself to some beautiful phrasing and gives us a break from the intense D minors of the other parts, appears to be based on this sequence of chords: | C | C7 | F | F | D7 | D7 | G minor | A7 | .
It seems to me that at about 0.54 the lighting reveals the condensation of Shay's and Barnabus's breath as they play. It must have been a cool and very humid evening.
From the FAQ page on the Tuba Skinny website: "Where is Erika? Erika relocated to North Carolina. She no longer performs with us on a regular basis; however, she does still tour with us and join us for major festivals."
