Original lyrics
"Had a dream last night
That I was dead
Had a dream last night
That I was dead
Evil spirits
All around my bed
The devil came
And grabbed my hand
The devil came
And grabbed my hand
Took me way down
To that red hot land
Mean blues spirits
Stuck their forks in me
Mean blues spirits
Stuck their forks in me
Made me moan
And groan in misery
Fairies and dragons
Spitting out blue flames
Fairies and dragons
Spitting out blue flames
Showing their teeth
For they was glad I came
Demons with their eyelash
Dripping blood
Demons with their eyelash
Dripping blood
Dragging sinners
To their brimstone flood
"This is hell, " I cried
Cried with all my might
"This is hell, " I cried
Cried with all my might
Oh, my soul
I can't bear the sight
Started running
'Cause it is my cup
Started running
'Cause it is my cup
Run so fast
'Til someone woke me up"
Bessie Smith was born on April 15, 1894 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Both of her parents died when she was kid, so that she was raised by her older sister Viola.
She and her brother Andrew busked money on the streets of Chattanooga, by singing and dancing.
Bessie started performing her own act in 1913 at Atlanta's "81" theater. After the big success Ma Rainey got with her records in the early 1920s, she eventually began her own recording career in 1923. Her first songs were immediate hits, such as "Downhearted Blues" or "Gulf Coast Blues".
Smith began to be the highest-paid black artist of her time, having her own railroad car.
She recorded 160 recordings for Columbia, notably her version of "Alexander's Ragtime Band", her best-selling record. In 1929, Bessie made her own film appearance with "St. Louis Blues".
Her career was cut short by the Great Depression of the 1930s.
On September 26, 1937 she was critically injured by a car accident, and died the day after.
She had no tombstone until 1970 when Janis Joplin paid for her to have one.
Erika, the solos of Craig, Barnabus, Todd, and everyone else as well - it's absolutely brilliant, to tears. It seems that the musicians are deeply immersed in the mood and scene that the melody and words create. Their playing is like a theatrical performance, a mystery play where the instruments pronounce their monologues like actors...
I don't think there is another trad jazz band out there that could top Tuba Skinny performing this tune. Erika reaching back and giving an absolute stunning vocal performance.
Je to prostě úžasná kapela.
God, the solos! Craig, smooth as a pound of melting butter... ❤❤❤
Excellent talent here, perfectly sung and played. Everyone in tune with their part.
One of the absolute best recent TS vids. Thank you so much for posting!!!
I love the smiles from both the ladies, during and after Craig's wonderful solo, where he conjures up the fear of the person dreaming.
The beating heart of New Orleans Blues. Fabulous
Wunderbar alle...aber Craig, so großartig wie noch nie im Clarinetto
🔴🦅🇺🇸🦅 Don't we just love the Cajun French accent , She really gets me going , Great memories of New Orleans Louisiana. Morgan City and West Bank , And Tulane law University and Pat Kings Gin Mill , on St. Charles ave ‼️🙏‼️
You do this song very well; don't know why, but I've always liked it.
I don't know who is mixing these videos, but I've never heard a bad mix from the band. But I think a lot of that comes from the musicians professionalism and their use of dynamics.
Masterful.

(Erika sings something like these words, and sings some of the verses in a different order)

Bessie Smith couldn't sing and neither can the bass drum beater. I love Tuba Skinny, but if you want to hear singers, find Emmet's Place (Emmet Cohen) on this site. Shaye, please find someone that can sing for a lead singer.
