Great documentary, cant believe l haven't found this since now!
What should happen is the hotel manager should be taken in for questioning, its damn obvious the hotel staff have nicked it, in fact the hotel staff should all be taken in for questioning
They steal with impunity! Nothing will happen!
They just have fallen into the oldest trick on hotel management... using the hotel safe boxes... Unless the money is counted and a document is signed for it's reception no hotel will ever pay for any "disappearances"... Was obviously taken by the hotel staff or even the main manager...!
It was all on video and the cops go to see the video whenever they wanted
Excellent journalism!
1000 pounds finders fee into the police pocket, welcome to Thailand
Always
Well, that is the backside of the easy life in countries like thailand. Anything can happen to anybody.
@@sabineokorn4983 Spot on!
1600 pounds*
One is lucky to get as much as they did back!.....
5k 20 years ago crazy amount to take there
They're liars
5K 20 years ago would had been like 25-40K in Thai money.
You wouldn't even take 5K to the south of France 20 years ago...
Well definitely not those two!

@@aflentertainmentAren't you a regular little Columbo.
@@aflentertainment It depends on many things as to how much money you take.
So the Cost of an Investigation is £1600, split how many Ways in the Police station? Would you buy an Apple from Kevin?
It's a Sawasdee welcome Inn - an absolute bottom end flea pit of a guesthouse chain.
Agreed. These tourists could afford the flights, £5,000 in spending money, but staying in a flea pit roach hotel. It's not foolproof, but if they weren't so cheap with their accommodation it probably wouldn't have been stolen.
@user-oi9to7ux7k for sure. I know they didn't know this, but it's a warning to others.
@@user-oi9to7ux7k Yes, read the hotel reviews.
The problem is that the government keeps on pushing Pattaya as family-friendly, and people flock there expecting it to be safe.
This footage is old it says 200 bars there's more Like 3000 plus here.
Actually it's over 20 years old.
The hotels usually only accept liability for 5000 baht - around £100 - for a safe deposit box in a room. I don't know about boxes at reception, but quite possibly the same limit. Cards might seem the obvious solution, but most places want cash. And of course you get a 3% bank fee for overseas usage and a poor exchange rate for card usage. As for travel insurance, that probably won't cover the amount of cash you need, plus your holiday will probably be over before they pay out anyway.
You might get a 3% fee and poor exchange but others with good cards and banks pay nothing, including having atm charges refunded back regardless of amount.
@ash31311 All the major uk clearing banks have these charges, so the comment is relevant to the vast majority of people. Perhaps a more constructive comment would have been to name the financial institutions providing the fee free accounts to which you refer.
Charles Schwab and ATM. I pay no fees
@censoredeveryday3320 The couple in the video who had their money stolen were British holidaymakers. This was the intended audience of my original post.
Schwab is an American bank. It does offer 'checking' accounts to the UK, but it's primarily an investment platform and a brokerage account with a minimum balance is also required. Also, all funds are held in the US in US dollars and all transactions are in US dollars. It's no use as a replacement for a UK current account and I can't really see a British holidaymaker opening one just to try and save a bit of money on card usage when they go away once or twice as year.
The police kept the rest of the money, no doubt.
The most important thing when talking to Thai people or trying to solve a problem is to stay calm, speak politely and not raise your voice. Thai people don't like it at all when we are quick-tempered and opinionated.
20:10
I can almost guarantee 5 minutes after the British couple left the police station, the hotel worker would have walked out from his cell. He gave the police their cut so it's all worked out fine.
I have seen tourist loose there Passport to people they met there , they have gone to the Police and police have told them .. Give them some money and they will give it back..That's been on TV ..Shit Hole..
Name the Hotel
And ruin the reputation of a hotel (that probably doesnt even exist anymore) based on the actions of one employee, good one!
There are extremely severe defamation laws in Thailand. That's probably why they didn't.
That “business man” is no business man
$1000 police fee, lol
18:00 it would not be at all unusual if he was setup, the plant them and try and get a big payoff, police, lawyers and judges all getting a very nice cut and his business rivals get whatever it is they wanted
Yes 20 years ago it was fairly common. Especially if he was the owner of a night life venue and was perceived to be rich..
Of course they won't refund it it's staff that stole it mate.
No way will hotel refund! They are in partnership with the 'authorities'!
@@senianns9522 They have to pay tax to the "police"

Someone always has the override key to the safe. Keeping more than you can afford to lose in them is bonkers.
4:07 Gold comedy timing. 😂😂
And yet I left valuables, including £1300 in a safety deposit box, while I was kept out of Thailand during covid for two years and three months.
It was there when I returned.
I had not even paid the rent.
There is no telling how honest they will be.

Yes the officers definitely pocketed that money ! That gave them the motivation to find it 😂
You mention that "Pattaya is visited by more than 400,000 tourists per year" which is technically correct but the official tourist figs from the TaT will be more like 17 MILLION in 2024! its been many decades (excluding the height of C0vid) since Pattaya even dropped below 400k visitors per MONTH, however as British tourists aren't even in the top 10 of citizens visiting by number yes your 200k brits/year might be accurate.
This documentary was produced back in 2545 (see the year on the bottom of the screen at 23:44), 22 years ago.
This is 2002 you clown.
17 million for Thailand not only Pattaya.
Welcome to the real world when you misbehave in Thailand or any other country that we go to
agree 1000% - 99.9% of people who go to Thailand just drink, relax and enjoy themselves without behaving like a d1ckhead. Its not difficult
It happened to me but the owner gave me all the money 💰 back it was the Staff who stole my money in my safety box trust nobody 💯 in Thailand 🇹🇭
The Police stole the money, fees for service top to bottom, standard behavior but who can you complain to.
Put some money in safe deposit box and keep some on your person(s). $5,000 in one and $10 in the other isn't prudent.
Iv been going to Pattaya twice a year for years and believe me the Thai people will stick together from a cleaner to police chief they will back each other you have to be very careful in Pattaya the people there are some of the most desperate and poorest in Thailand and anything goes be careful or else !!!

A vacation is an extended time or days off.

I had my passport stolen and spare wallet credit cards in Pattaya last March on a BAHT bus my girlfriend jumped off the bus last minute. I got off quick my man bag was open my own fault I cancelled my passport I had to pay 100pound for an emergency passport. My passport and cards were recovered but too late. I've travelled 4 times and never had a problem before. I'm always vigilant and insured. I normally lock my money up at safe in the apartment. I carried my passport for identification to change money. Best not to carry it.
Why don't you get cash from ATMs? Too stingy to pay the ATM fees?
@JazzFunkNobby1964 I'm not stingy but you pay 6% fees. Cash is better for the exchange rate. I didn't lose money it was my passport and credit card
Who the hell entrusts a 2 or 3 star Thai hotel with 5K cash? No disrespect intended towards the Thais but that's a LOT of money for them, 20 years ago. That would have been around 350,000 THB - the equivalent of 3 years salary for your typical Thai receptionist at the time. Take the 5K, knowing you can offer 2K to the police, and the job is done.
I pity them, but how incredibly naive and stupid?
Thats not to suggest all Thai receptionists would have done the same, but the chances of it happening are quite high.
Did that guy actually say “sex offensives”??.....lmao
Police take there cut that's where it's gone 😂😂😂
At least the police did something to investigate the theft of £5000, returned most of the money and the thief received a 3 year sentence. In your country, would the police even bother putting down their doughnuts and taking a statement for such a crime?
Smells so fishy,..5 k pounds and no credits cards,..Geez,..that is too dumb,..
