  • The director's cut of Ken Russell's controversial 1971 masterpiece The Devils was recently given a rare screening at the BFI Southbank. Here I ask why it has still not been released on DVD and discuss the film and it's scandalous history with producer Steve Woolley.

It is a shame that it has not been released on Blu-Ray. It was beautifully filmed and it's detailed cinematography needs to be seen on Blu Ray releases!

When "The Devils" premiered in Washington, DC over five decades ago, I remember leaving the theater in a state of pure exhilaration knowing I had seen one of the most beautiful and extraordinary films ever made. To appreciate this most-brilliant work of art, you must first realize a true catholic church already exists grounded in the sacred mystery of humanity's sexual nature. As Saint Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians, "For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; but then shall I know, even as also I am known."

The Devils is Britain's answer to Pier Paolo Pasolini, and of course only Ken Russell could have pulled it off.

I was part of the audience and the film is very intense. The performances are very good throughout and it's visually impressive. The politics of the film often get overlooked in favour of the scenes of debauchery, though it could well have been the former which upset the Catholic church as much as the latter. There's a lot of hypocrisy on show too. And it's all based on a true episode from history.
As Mark said before the showing it's not a blasphemous film but a film about blasphemy.

How does a movie inspired by actual events get censored? This happened. The people in the film existed and experienced these things. History needs to be censored now? Unbelievable.

One of my favorite films. No idea why films like this get treated so badly.

I saw this on channel 4 years ago and none other than Mark Kermode introduced it. It's a truly disturbing movie.

A friend of mine showed me the DVD he just bought of The Devils just yesterday. It's got the Rape of Christ scene but sadly no bone masturbation scene. No surprises there though. We should sign the bone masturbation petition!!

@zaftra The fact Russell was a Catholic probably made the church more angry. They saw it as an attack by one of their own!
I believe Kermode's father is a lay preacher.

@cjknotty Has far as I'm aware, Ken Russel was Catholic when the film was made and i think Kermode said he was Christian.

@edwdixon5 You think? Check Variety, check whats in production. I wasn't being pithy, I was being prophetic with loaded dice. Get out more, sonny.

@edwdixon5 I tell you somehting. In a world where - just for money - for that's what runs Hollywood dont'ya know - it was deemed perfectly reasonable to remake Peckinpah's Straw Dogs. So how much of a leap do you think it would be for some hipster to redo this? Are you naive or just so in thrall of this film you think it could never happen? Anything is up for grabs, my friends. If the studio thinks it could wring one dollar more than the the production cost it wouldn't think twice.
