I miss my cassette of this album. I played this at high volume. As a black woman my choice of music was misunderstood. But my Mother was and still is phenomenal for teaching me and having me love all genres of music. I am forever grateful. So did a lot of the metal hair bands. Scorpions, Iron Maiden. The 80's and the talent that prospered and grew in the 80's owe almost their entire musical identity to MTV. Without MTV, a lot of these bands would not have been as prosperous.
I was there! One of the most epic concerts ever. Rockin it with Pat, Neil and the The Band, HBO, and thousands of us from the Tri State Area. Easily one of the most brilliant performances in rock history!

This song still makes me cry as a man, because I cried listening to the same song as a boy, except the pain then was different then today, I now know the difference between physical and mental pain. All the abuse from so many adults, I don't know why I'm alive. I went so far as to hang myself as a young man because the pain of my childhood was still deep in my soul. Physical, mental, sexual, religious, and that's just the start of my young life.
I remember all the abuse they took over this song. Child abuse was not deemed appropriate for rock and roll. If not, what the hell is rock and roll for if not to point out things in our society that we don't feel comfortable talking about. As one who grew up in the 60's, I know what music can mean. This was a great performance of music, but an even greater message.
I've been to a LOT of concerts. My single greatest concert experience is seeing this song performed live... It was pouring rain, my wife and I were right up against the fence, I look over and there is this incredible blonde standing on the bottom rail of the fence, completely soaked, fists all clenched, singing and crying her eyes out. I don't know her story, but 20 years later that one concert moment tops all of them. Must have been something. Marvin Grombacher is probably the most under-rated drummer ever and Neal Geraldo is one of the most under-rated guitarists..
I just saw her live 3 days ago. I never knew the history of this song and she explained it. I cried too. I'm a survivor of abuse as an adult . and I can't explain... it was like an intense cathartic experience. It really affected me. I have so much respect for her and Neil, I always knew her music from the 80's but wasn't a huge fan, and thought of her as a "pop rocker" who looked good. Boy, was I wrong. I have so much respect and and am in awe of the talent that her and Neil possess. And, btw, she looked fabulous and her voice was as strong as ever.

I saw her on this tour. She was incredible! Her music was way more rock, and harder than the music that she was famous for at the time. It was one of the hardest rock concerts I've been to, and I've seen the Doors, Zeppelin, Dio, Priest and she was up there with them. This chic could rock.
I saw Pat at SPAC very early 80's on what I believe was her first national tour...those who know...know. One of the best shows I ever saw! This song helped me to begin the long journey of recovery and to decades later testify at a NYS Senate hearing in the mid Aughties as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, much to the chagrin of many family members. To Pat you will never know the strength you gave me all the times I played this album, head phones on and singing at the top of my lungs along with you...forever grateful...thank you!

I saw them that year in Cincinnati, OH. I was blown away that such a diminutive woman could just put her head back and sing with such power, force and passion! Ive always love her drummer, Myron Grombacher, as well. He was incredible and exciting to watch and listen to.

Yeah pat benatar didn't hate children, she has children and loves them, this song was about hell on earth for abused children and the horror they endure like someone else commented, when this song came out all kinds of skeptics and pessimist were looking for anything to discredit Pat's meaning but we all clearly know exactly what she's writing about. Earth is our own hell.
As a survivor of childhood sex abuse, I really wish I could just hug her. Though I realized it later in life, this song gave me power when I was powerless. I'd like to thank Ms. Benatar for giving a powerful, angry even, voice to the children. She is a very beautiful person and in this sense presents an angelic, welcoming, guarding image to our victimizers. Like an angel holding you in her arms while fighting them off and comforting you. When I first 'really' heard this song I was on my way to a hockey game where I had to fight a guy. I lost it in my brother's car- he didn't know then, nor does he now know what happened to me. He didn't know how to react and I don't blame him. I was a puddle. A broken man who'd just realized what had been wrong, what'd been hidden, for so many years. I played well that night. I fought that guy and won, well. I've never trusted anyone even though my love life has been a shambles of infidelity and alcoholism (on their part) I've always resisted "doing it the way it's supposed to be done" because that's what got me there- here. You're supposed to go to your Dr.'s appointments right? So you go. And Mom says go, so you go. You don't complain because it's not in your nature and you don't really know if it's wrong because he's asked her to leave the room since you were 7 or 8- shortly after you met him. All the times you didn't cry. Moving on the fringes.
They really got it right with this song. I know, as I was severely abused by a doctor on Long Island when I was a kid. I am so glad they never stopped performing it, despite the criticism. It is probably one of the greatest songs ever written. Quietly, but definitely so.

We played this song in our 80s cover band (we had a good chick singer) and i remember listening to these lyrics at the time were pretty bold and certainly different from most of the 80s fluff on top 40 back then. What a time to have lived through, we all thought our generation of music was so new and fresh and hipper ! It did get rather eclectic then with the punk sceen still alive, then "NewWave" hit, and then came the "Hair Bands" even Heavy Metal took off to another level. Eighties MTV was revolutionary and really changed music. Not necessarily for the better imo.You had to look the part and every song needed a "video" . We thought that would never die!! Looking back, we had fun and felt relevant , even in a cover band lol!!
I saw Pat on September 11th during her "Summer Vacation Tour". Her voice was as good as it was in the 80s. It was an incredibly tough day, but in the end I'm glad that she went on with the show. Thanks Pat!

I saw her on this tour. She was incredible! Her music was way more rock, and harder than the music that she was famous for at the time. It was one of the hardest rock concerts I've been to, and I've seen the Doors, Zeppelin, Dio, Priest and she was up there with them. This chic could rock.
I saw Pat at SPAC very early 80's on what I believe was her first national tour...those who know...know. One of the best shows I ever saw! This song helped me to begin the long journey of recovery and to decades later testify at a NYS Senate hearing in the mid Aughties as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, much to the chagrin of many family members. To Pat you will never know the strength you gave me all the times I played this album, head phones on and singing at the top of my lungs along with you...forever grateful...thank you!

This is what makes today's music in my opinion seem so limited because the bar in the 80s was already raised so immensely high with performers Like Pat Benatar. I grew up as a teenager in the 80s and I have witnessed music for many generations and in this person's opinion there's no comparison. They didn't need stage gimmicks fancy dancing sexy revealing outfits to sell their shows. This the shows sold out because of one reason pure musical Talent.

As a survivor of childhood sex abuse, I really wish I could just hug her. Though I realized it later in life, this song gave me power when I was powerless. I'd like to thank Ms. Benatar for giving a powerful, angry even, voice to the children. She is a very beautiful person and in this sense presents an angelic, welcoming, guarding image to our victimizers. Like an angel holding you in her arms while fighting them off and comforting you. When I first 'really' heard this song I was on my way to a hockey game where I had to fight a guy. I lost it in my brother's car- he didn't know then, nor does he now know what happened to me. He didn't know how to react and I don't blame him. I was a puddle. A broken man who'd just realized what had been wrong, what'd been hidden, for so many years. I played well that night. I fought that guy and won, well. I've never trusted anyone even though my love life has been a shambles of infidelity and alcoholism (on their part) I've always resisted "doing it the way it's supposed to be done" because that's what got me there- here. You're supposed to go to your Dr.'s appointments right? So you go. And Mom says go, so you go. You don't complain because it's not in your nature and you don't really know if it's wrong because he's asked her to leave the room since you were 7 or 8- shortly after you met him. All the times you didn't cry. Moving on the fringes.

They really got it right with this song. I know, as I was severely abused by a doctor on Long Island when I was a kid. I am so glad they never stopped performing it, despite the criticism. It is probably one of the greatest songs ever written. Quietly, but definitely so.

We played this song in our 80s cover band (we had a good chick singer) and i remember listening to these lyrics at the time were pretty bold and certainly different from most of the 80s fluff on top 40 back then. What a time to have lived through, we all thought our generation of music was so new and fresh and hipper !
It did get rather eclectic then with the punk sceen still alive, then "NewWave" hit, and then came the "Hair Bands" even Heavy Metal took off to another level. Eighties MTV was revolutionary and really changed music. Not necessarily for the better imo.You had to look the part and every song needed a "video" . We thought that would never die!! Looking back, we had fun and felt relevant , even in a cover band lol!!
I saw Pat on September 11th during her "Summer Vacation Tour". Her voice was as good as it was in the 80s. It was an incredibly tough day, but in the end I'm glad that she went on with the show. Thanks Pat!
