my my Aunt Pam, before she retires, used to set up space for whatever the performing acts wanted to use space for, backstage..at a number of concert venues on the East Coast, for many yrs. She was a backstage manager at places like Warner Theater and Constitution Hall in DC...The Beacon Theater in NYC...and bigger places like RFK Stadium and The Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA. She even catered food for the Soccer players that played at RFK Stadium for the 1994 World Cup.
So, she's seen it all. And one of the images that she tells the story of, over and over, and has framed in pictures on stage and backstage, is Patti LaBelle performing at the Warner Theater in 1981....Jerry "Ice Man' Butler and Phyllis Hyman, opened for her. And the story goes, Patti cooked for her band, as well as Jerry and Phyllis's bands. This idea that singers that headline tours or concerts together, share a band, is not the truth, MOST OF THE TIME.
So, we're talking about Ms Patti cooking food for a total of about 40 or more people AFTER SHE PERFORMED, when you consider family and the entourages that traveled with the singers. My Aunt still has a picture of Phyllis Hyman LITERALLY helping Ms Patti, plate food, for Jerry Butler and his wife and children. And when Phyllis was done, she sat on Jerry's lap, eating ribs and mac and cheese....and was licking her fingers just like everybody else. In the picture she's wearing a stocking on her head, too with a robe on and big floppy house slippers. Jerry is sitting there with this big, gorgeous woman sitting on his lap, like a proud Dad...and they're all laughing at Ms Patti, who is quite the story teller. There is no kitchen at Warner Theater...so Patti has always traveled with her own pots, pans and electric grills. To this day, she does.
