If I were to be shopping for a rig for a 5th wheel I would definitely want a truck with that kind of a setup and capacity. I have to say that truck with the trailer sitting behind it is the ultimate retirement / vacation home on wheels. Someday maybe…thanks for sharing.
The problem I have with using a 4500/5500 is they don't have the high output engine, so your only looking at 360 HP and 800LBs torque compared to the 3500's 420HP and 1075LBs torque
Yup, nice truck. We have a Ram 5500 with a Classy Chassis Hauler Body and Kelderman air ride that we pull or 42' New Horizons 5th wheel with. Love these trucks. . And you are correct, the wide track frontend is huge. And the larger brakes are great as well. Oh maybe you should get one of these just to show that you are not just a Ford guy LOL!!!

Great video. That looks like the Luxe showroom in Mansfield, TX. We got an appointment and toured a Toy Hauler and Rear Living about 5 years ago. You are right about the quality. Nice truck. I had always been a Ford guy until I bought my first Dodge Diesel. 2007 2500 6.7. Had it 10 years and traded it in on my current 3500 Dually Longhorn Laramie Megacab. I won't be going back. Lol

Thank you for looking over this truck, I believe this will be my next truck purchase. I currently own a 3500 SRW and I cannot find a decent truck camper I can fit in comfortably that fits in my payload capacity. I love the Arctic Fox line of campers, but the base weight even limits the remaining payload on a 3500 dual rear wheel. I figure a 5500 could comfortably handle a 990 or 1150 with a custom storage bed and a transfer flow tank between the cab and camper. If I had only shopped for the weight I intended to carry first, I wouldn’t be paying on a truck that doesn’t meet my needs… live and learn I guess.
I had to go back and search for it to make sure I was right, but I rewatched the video you did 2 years ago where the Chevy salesman actually talked you out of a Duramax 5500 because there was a tradeoff between payload capacity and towing capacity, which decided you against getting one for you channel. Then along comes this beast! And yes, I checked the Ram site and you can spec out a 5500 4x4 6.7L to tow a 34K trailer with a 43K GCWR and still have 11K of payload. That is a high-spec monster! I'm sure the heavy custom bed and Limited edition equipment take a bite out of that, but it should leave you plenty to haul even a Luxe. Not sure I'd want to tow a rig that big or be able to find many camp sites that would fit it, but you'd go in style. The other question is, how does it ride loaded/unloaded with the air suspension and all the other upgrades?
Ya, until the last 2-3 years, going to Class 4/5 meant a massive drop in tow capacity. Soon they should all be up to about 30-34k tow capacity with insane payloads. They really are getting to a point where they can haul light-to-medium Class 7/8 loads. This is a good thing as it can very well mean less fuel consumption overall due in part to things like aerodynamics and maneuverability when the tow vehicle is half as much weight as a Class 8.
The great thing about air suspension is you can really soften the ride when unloaded so it’s not giving you herniated discs in your back like these huge leaf springs packs will do unloaded.
That is one beautiful truck. Come on, JD, you know you want one! Just imagine what owning one would mean for your channel. I told my wife that if we ever went full-time RVers this is the truck we'd get. Keep the great content coming!
Awesome videos. I have a Luxe and pull it with the SportChassis M2 w/trailer saver hitch. Just an FYI for future videos, the TS is 5k pin weight with standard 2 airbags. Add the optional 3rd bag and it’s now 7.5k pin weight. Both the Ram you reviewed and mine have the 3rd bag. 👍🏼
The truck I dream of having some day. Have a Limited Longhorn Dually now, loaded with every option available. But that bed with the hitch is a step above!

I drive a 2022 Ram 5500 cab and chassis setup with a 10k hydraulic lift arm delivering rolloff dumpsters. I much perfer it to my old 2019 Ford F550, torque off the line is much better, rides nicer empty, trans stays cooler and has wireless carplay! The only thing the Ford was better at was being faster and I prefer the tow mirrors on the Ford over the Ram. Most of our loaded bins are between 3-4k pounds but occasionally we will get one between 7-10k lbs and it handles it fine. 22k miles of mostly city driving and so far so good. Just replaced the steers with some Toyo M608 which provide much better traction, which we need at delivery sites and the transfer stations.
Freaking dream truck! Id pay just to experience that truck towing a heavy and very large rv like that. Ive seen them b4 ofcourse but to be able to ride in one while towing would be amazing

This is what I’d get over the big rv haulers. Easier to live with, more compact and so much easier to park. Hard to jump in a Volvo or Freightliner and go for a drive sightseeing, tool around town etc. yes, you can put a scion IQ or smart car on one of those, no question. Loading/unloading a car, maintenance etc. is simply more than I want to deal with while I’m supposed to be relaxing and enjoying myself. I can take this truck for a quick stop at the corner store, grocery store and many other places that the huge truck is simply too much of a hassle and my wife won’t drive them big rigs. If I’m going to stay a week or longer wherever I’m at I’ll rent a car. This truck is perfect!! NICE REVIEW JD! (And yes, I can see ya in one of these.)
I'm a GM guy, love my Duramax/Allison combo. That being said, this officially ranks #1 for me in the ultimate tow rig category. I would love to have a new GM 5500 4x4. it being a true medium duty truck with the true Medium duty size makes it not as practical. I feel like this truck is the perfect mix. Plus ram definitely has one of the best interiors. The hauler bed, plus the kelderman air suspension makes this truck and absolute dream.
Basically a luxury medium duty truck. This is one where I'd agree with JD. There's no way I'd put that Luxe behind a 3500/350. But then you need a Class A license just to tow it. The trailer alone is over the magic 26,000 lb number...
I'd like to see you drive it to see how it handles and rides. If you're not pulling an RV or a Hotshot rig it's going to be a daily driver. Just be interesting to know.
That is an awesome setup. I understand why ford and GM have not done the higher trims, because usually they are used for tow trucks or work, but then there is the RV crowd and those that are even full time RV'ers and this setup makes sense. I would rather drive around that beast in the comfort of a Limited trim and enjoy my ride.

Love your videos. This is indeed in fact an amazing truck. I got a 5500 also but a much lower trim. Also at 4:55 you say 6 AUX switches. On this 5500 there are 5 AUX switches as the 6th is occupied for the PTO. In fact if you look at the AUX 6 it says "PTO" instead of AUX.
I have this same limited drw HO in a 3500 and holy moly....that payload! I could pull this 5th wheel but with a payload of only 5100 pounds it would have to be me, hitch, and an empty truck to stay under the gvwr. Crazy!

Looking at this truck and how it is built, I found myself trying to categorize it. Is it a daily, maybe, weekender, most likely. Or is this the next iteration of “production coach built trucks”? I can only hope that the OEM’s take note of what their customers are doing to make these trucks, work for them. Thank you BTBRV for another informative video.
These Luxe trailers are beautiful and obviously very customizable, but they're huge, at least what you're showing us. I don't know many, if any, state parks that have sites big enough to handle these beast and I live in Texas. That's my preferred type of camping. Corp parks are nice too and some have very large sites. I'm guessing though that the types of people that have this type of camper, or coach, would probably be staying in resort that cater to the big rigs. The Ram is beautiful too! I'd like to see a road test if that's possible. I'm with the camp that some of these big trailers should be pulled with a semi tractor.
Ram trucks are the best in the business.. I'm not biased. I've owns Powerstroke and Duramax. Ram Cummins has been the only truck to hold up against all the towing and abuse I put them through.
Love the utility of the hauler bed! I've been debating replacing my F-350 DRW's bed with a hauler bed in the future, but I'm not sure I'll haul enough with it to justify sacrificing the bed.
Yes JD, it's beautiful for sure. I had a chance to buy one exactly like that in white, just the chassis cab, up here in fairbanks for about 13k less than today's price about a year and a half ago. Should have done it then. I would love something like this, but with gooseneck instead for dedicated hotshot, or the beautiful luxe I don't own yet..lol
With that 5er, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that you are still over front axle rating. With my last two trucks, the FAWR was the hardest to keep in check. I finally gave up and said that if I was under GVWR I don't care.
Like any F450 and up the suspension is hard but it drives great and lots of power. I mostly got them for the payload and turning radius. I was going to get a f600 but they didn’t make them in crew cabs
Sorry JD but my ram 3500 really can’t go through drive throughs. So I know that won’t fit. As for Walmart parking or anywhere for that matter I have to park in the back. But it is a very well equipped truck.
I have absolutely no need for this truck. That said, I watched the video 2 times, all the way thru, no jumping fwd. That is an exceptional tow vehicle.
I really like it, it more than fits the bill and can handle that big fifth wheel but being an owner operator for forty years having my own semis I’d just as well get a tractor with any sleeper configuration and maybe single axle for a trailer that size. Not to mention getting the same luxury features that’s inside of the dodge. . Don’t believe me check the big trucks out as far as options for performance and luxury. But I think the dodge represented is the cats meow for towing a big rv.
I would love to see you do a breakdown of the differences between the F450 and the 5500. I have the 450 and wanted to get a truck bed camper that maxes out the payload. So we looked at liquid springs to help with the suspension but not sure what else makes the difference between mine and the next level up.
I’m not quite sure why the concern over CDL, as long as it’s RV or personal use you can use anything you want. Except for a couple states that require non commercial cdl’s.
A friend of my just took delivery of his 2023, dodge ram, 5500 Limited pick up. And of course his is all decked out with every conceivable option that you can get on the 5500 including the premium stereo package with the huge “iPad” style screen.. And of course it has the Cummings turbo diesel engine in it. On the downside that particular truck he spent or cost him over $100,000 Canadian he wouldn’t tell me exactly how much he paid other than it cost him over $100,000 but it. Oh Ya, the mirrors on the 2023 dodge pick ups, 3500 or a new design. Definitely different design then shown in the video here. I absolutely love the pick up truck that is shown in this video but unfortunately for me, I’m still waiting to win the lottery. Ha Ha

I would love to see you do a breakdown of the differences between the F450 and the 5500. I have the 450 and wanted to get a truck bed camper that maxes out the payload. So we looked at liquid springs to help with the suspension but not sure what else makes the difference between mine and the next level up.

I’m not quite sure why the concern over CDL, as long as it’s RV or personal use you can use anything you want. Except for a couple states that require non commercial cdl’s.

A friend of my just took delivery of his 2023, dodge ram, 5500 Limited pick up. And of course his is all decked out with every conceivable option that you can get on the 5500 including the premium stereo package with the huge “iPad” style screen..
And of course it has the Cummings turbo diesel engine in it. On the downside that particular truck he spent or cost him over $100,000 Canadian he wouldn’t tell me exactly how much he paid other than it cost him over $100,000 but it. Oh Ya, the mirrors on the 2023 dodge pick ups, 3500 or a new design. Definitely different design then shown in the video here.
I absolutely love the pick up truck that is shown in this video but unfortunately for me, I’m still waiting to win the lottery. Ha Ha
Well.... even a lot of pick-ups will not fit through a drive tru, seen plenty of videos of that, lol. But dammit that 5500 is beautiful.
Wish they did a pickup bed. I’d love this but it would need to be more that just a camper hauler.
For comparison, my Ram 3500 limited megacab dually can tow 32,000 and has payload of 4850 lbs.
