- This is a video of a 2003 Honda rancher that was having electric shift issues, so he wanted to make it a foot shift. This is how I do it the close to factory way.

Nothing to it - loads of knowledge, good explanations, and great photography.
Thanks 👍
great video keep up the good work.very helpfully. you should build a raised work bench for the bikes.
Thanks. I would love a raised work platform but I have a pretty small shop and am pretty limited with space. I new larger shop is in the plans and a platform would me a definite.
Why do you keep “cut the camera off” during your videos? It would be a lot more helpful to your viewers to see what’s actually being done than to hear you say it and than show it later. You’re obviously a very good mechanic who is willing to share your knowledge; however, please consider showing the entire procedure. Thanks!
I have thought about that before but it would make the videos so long. I have done this on a few of my shorter ones. It seems most people loose interest in the work being done when they are just watching me work through every step. Also a majority of the time it would be me looking for a tool or a socket and editing would be a nightmare.
could you just weld a shifter to the shaft and not have to change it?
Thats not the way I like to do it but yes you can and I have seen it done like that numerous times. The only thing you need to watch if welding it is keeping the shaft pretty cool where it goes into the seal. If you melt the seal after welding then you will have to cut it back off to replace the seal.
What does it cost parts and labor.. my local atv shop price is $600 an thats for parts an labor..
But that's on a 2000 450 es..foreman
I have a 2000 rancher es 350, it shifts fine after it warms up sitting still but doesn’t like to shift when I’m driving. I cleaned all the grease and replaced it in the es system. It’s tough shifting by hand. I changed the oil, adjusted the clutch. I’m confused. Maybe speed sensor? The display works and shows my speed. The es system attempts the shift every time I press the button but doesn’t always complete the shift
Neutral light stays on all time what causes that shifts fine
Hello four wheeler doctor, I was wondering if you can help. I have a honda rancher 350 ES and its stuck in reverse. I changed the angle sensor, I've took off and clean the shift motor and none of it worked, I'm still stuck in reverse. Also I cant shift manually either. Do you know what else it could be? PLEASE HELP 🥺

I bet this broken part behind the front cover is your problem.
Do you know if this is the same as the 02 450es my wife hates the electric shift and her buttons or motor is going bad so figure I'll just swap it out to what she wants
Yes they are pretty much the same. The covers are shaped a little different but the process is the same
I’d love to get your info about switching out my trans to a manual.
Give me your email address.
@@FourwheelerDoctor jeremiah1981@hotmail.com thank you.
Great video. I have a 450 foreman ES. Do I have to change everything that you did on the 350? Or can I leave it like it is and just put the foot shifter on and drive it that way for everyday use? Will hurt anything? Thanks.
If you have a way to adapt from the 12 mm hex shaft to a shifter then you can run it like that with no issues. You will just have to rig up some way to connect to the shaft. Removing the gear in the front just makes it easier to shift and changing the shaft out like I did in the video makes it just like the factory setup.
@@FourwheelerDoctorI bought an old 450ES but one of the last owners welded a shifter onto the 12mm shaft. I was going to fix the e-shift and replace that arm with a new one once I no longer need the manual shift. Do you think that'd be a waste of time/effort and is the process basically the same as on this 350ES Rancher? Love your videos - thanks.
Do you need to put gasket maker on the cover
You don't have to since it has a gasket on it but it doesn't hurt.
Couldn’t you just put a shift lever on that fit that hex shaft?
Yes you can this is just more of an OEM fix.
Can u give me a list of parts I need .I have a 2006 Honda rancher 350 es I hate the es and I want to know what parts I need
The parts you will need are the gearshift spindle 24611-hn5-670,the shifter 24700-hn5-670, and the rubber pad for shifter 24781-371-000, and some rtv to seal up the rear cover once you remove it. This is for the 2003 Rancher.
I got a 2016 Honda Rubicon 500 shifting issue _on the dash
Count how many times the dash flashes. It should give you a code for the issue.
Would this conversion be similar on a '07 420TE? The main difference I see is there is no shaft on the rear cover, though the casting is there where the shaft would be. I can't tell if the hole has a freeze plug or would have to be drilled out.
Good video by the way👍
It would be very similar. You would either have to replace the rear cover to get one with the hole in it or drill the one you have out. I've never drilled one bacause I usually can pick a cover up fairly cheap.
Ok thanks for the info. It looks like the shift angle sensor is also located in the rear case cover, which I would lose if I swapped covers. Would the lack of an angle sensor cause problems? Codes and such?
@@Gen1cummins1992 it would throw a code but since you are doing away with the electric shift it would not affect the running of the bike.
Great video. Hey can u tell me where u got the shaft? I can't find a spline shaft for mine. Will a shaft from another bike work? Or does Honda make one?
I found a used one on eBay. I am not sure if Honda still makes them. Any shaft off a 350 will work
@@FourwheelerDoctor so other than pulling those gears out on the electric shift motor you really didn’t have to pull the front cover to change the shift shaft in the rear?
@@codybialey that is correct. Some people do it without changing that shaft and without taking the gears out of the front but it just makes it tougher to shift and you have to make a shifter that will fit on the 12 mm hex shaft on the es models
@@FourwheelerDoctor I want to put a standard shift front cover on mine will the shaft stay that goes to the shift motor gears or does it need to be removed?
@@codybialey the shaft will have to be replaced with the shorter foot shift one
Can this be done with a 2013 foreman 500? There is no existing hex shaft on the side instead the emergency shift shaft comes out the front.
You would need another rear cover with the hole for it to work on a newer model Foreman
If you just weld a shifter to the hex head would that work or not?
Yes it will just make sure you keep the shaft fairly cool where it goes into the motor while welding to keep the seal from being damaged.
@@FourwheelerDoctor thank you I will probably do that.
Jb weld
I have a 03 rancher doing the same thing. Could you let me know that the part # is that I would need to fix mine. Thank you.
The parts you will need are the gearshift spindle 24611-hn5-670,the shifter 24700-hn5-670, and the rubber pad for shifter 24781-371-000, and some rtv to seal up the rear cover once you remove it.
If I just gut the shift motor will it shift easier?
Gutting it or leaving a gear out will both make it shift easier.
@@FourwheelerDoctor thank you for you video. I'm about ready to blow up my quad and I'm just looking to make it shift like a manual quad without much work. I just rebuilt the engine and don't want to tear it apart again. I was just going to fix a shift lever on the current shaft and remove the shift motor so it would shift easier. Am I right in my thinking? Thanks again
I have a senser not sure what or where it goes. I was hoping if I send you a picture you might tell me what I need to know
Sure send me a picture of it
@@FourwheelerDoctor I can't send picture threw UA-cam...pipperx12@gmail.com
I sent you my email
Is the seal the same for the shifter on the foreman 400 1997?
I'm not 100% sure but I think it is.
Would it be the same for a Honda recon?
Yes pretty much the same
I followed your video step for step and seem to be having an issue with it shifting. The foot shift doesn't seem like it's doing anything ha. Any idea why? The display says it's in 1st gear but I'm certain I had it in neutral when I started, any idea what to look at, I'm gearing up to tear it back apart again
I ordered all the parts you displayed in the video also
I bet the arm with the slot in it on the end of the foot shift shaft didn't catch the nipple on the shaft that runs through the motor to the front.
"In theory" if that's what happened would the whole foot shaft be able to slide out?
Or could that be caused by the transmission not eing in neutral to begin with?
@@bonestock3238 that normally doesn't keep it from shifting. It may make it display the incorrect gear on the display
How do you reset the computer on 2005 Honda Rincon 650
As far as I know there isn't a reset for the computer. What problems are you having?
@@FourwheelerDoctor torque converter went out oil pump broke gear in the back now ESP is blinking motor is running strong
All that is fixed except for ESP
@@bryantoth8896 I don't think it has a reset but if you count the number of blinks it'll tell you what the problem is. It blinks a code
Where do you live? I have a Honda that needs this job done to it
