- Today I would like to chat with you about why I chose a cottagecore lifestyle while we explore a village of historic farmhouses that is literal cottagecore heaven. I would like to share with you why cottagecore can be so much more than an internet aesthetic and why cottagecore can even be a futuristic concept.

I completely agree with your summary of what cottage core means. I live in a tiny stone cottage in Wales which is just the perfect size for myself and my daughter Daisy. We have a large garden where we grow our own vegetables and created an orchard. We have dug 2 ponds and bought extra land to create a wild wood filled with native trees and wildflowers for wildlife

I'm In Wales too! Sadly not in a quaint little cottage, I live in the city but do the best I can to live slowly and implement myself in as much green areas as possible🌻🌱
I love your definition of Cottage Core. My grandfather always said there were no “Good Old Days”, but we can go forward and choose to live a simpler life using some of the things from the past but adapting them for the future.
Hallo Liz, I am an older person and I love your video's. Before that I new about the word cottage core I already did some of the things whiteout nowing that's called cottage core. From an early age I started to learn knitting after that crochet. And I was about 12 years old when i started to make my own clothes. I was always attracted to the older styles of clothes and never really dressed like the masses. I created my own style over the years and it comes close to what we now call cottage core .we also grown most of our vegetables in what we call here a volkstuin. I wish that there where more people to find the time to learn the old but so useful skills. Thanks for sharing this video and I look forward to the next one. Greetings from Holland 💟🌷🇾🇪

Hellol. Yes, the name "old world skills" has been circulating as I understand. At an older age, I am soooo keen on learning to knit and crochet. My current project is a re-grow garden in my kitchen in addition to a regular garden. Merci from Canada.

I am a senior person and so happy about you girls, trying to escape from the traps of the consum world. My granddaughter is growing a garden, she wants to study biology and have a sustainable way of life. I am so proud of her not wanting to be a top model, or to buying design clothes together with the ones of the fast fashion shops. It is far better, in my opinion to romanticize the country life than to hustle and discover after years that all that one achieved has no meaning , ending in a deep burn out. Go ahead dear Liz, you are bringing a lot of positivity to our world. Thank you!

I really enjoyed your video! I wish you had mentioned where you filmed. It is the Bad Windsheim Fränkisches Freilandmuseum in Bavaria, Germany. This museum preserves old houses by relocating them onto the museum grounds. Over the years, it has created several small „villages“, which represent different time periods from the early medieval period up to the 19th century. I visited this museum more times than I can count as a child, when my parents were rebuilding their old timbre frame house with as much historical accuracy as possible. The museum provides a wealth of knowledge on how people used to live, with beautiful houses filled with period accurate antique furniture. It’s quite honestly the best museum of its kind that I’ve come across, so I want people to know about it and visit when they are in the area. Cheers❤

It is a lovely place! Planning a trip to the part of Germany where my grandmother's family came from and this looks close enough to visit while I'm there! Adding it to my list 😊
This has been my preferred lifestyle since I was in High School and my friends thought me quite odd ; because I was a teenager in the early 1970's. There was no name attached to this manner of living, but a perfect example would be the life of Tasha Tudor. Many of my friends, of my age, have also lived a "Cottage Core" life for decades, it's really nothing new, but I am glad more people have come to embrace it.
I just shared the same message with this young lady. Telling her that 50 years ago we were doing the same thing however we did not have a name for it or the internet to discuss it or share with others. You just had to be there to know it and do it.😁

Beautiful..inside my soul I have always heard the Lord say..enjoy everything I have created for you and learn, and bring together the good aspects of every world. So I try to do that.
I love embroidery,hand sewing, cooking from scratch. Herbs and growing and grandma's old fashioned healing recipes...lace, ribbons etc. A rocking chair outside..and many more things. But I benefit from computers, electric stoves, beautiful fabrics, cell phones and many other modern things.. yes it's good to be able to see. . Both or all Worlds and compare the changes. I like crowds , but also my quiet reading and writing times, a tea cup etc . I could go on and on. Thank you for your beautiful video. Am a 75yr old loving life

Ah, Mary, we are the same age. I’ve lived in a small western town in Montana having grown up in metropolitan cities with pollution and noise. I stepped on a train in 1966 and headed west by myself and never looked back. I’ve traveled many places in the world but then back to my peaceful, quiet home where I cook, bake, knit, crochet, quilt and when I worked, I sewed my whole dress wardrobe. I deliberately do not have a cell phone except a flip phone in the bottom of my purse for car emergencies. No one knows my number. Voice mail answers my ☎️ house phone so that eliminates robocalls. I keep the ringer turned off and occasionally check caller I.d. My house is the most peaceful place I know, surrounded by good books. Yes, I do have my late husband’s computer which I use once a year to do my taxes and occasionally print out a knitting pattern. I have an older laptop to hold my machine embroidery designs (all free downloads) and a new laptop that hasn’t been on in a year. Since my husband’s death I’ve lowered the cable bill but since I never turn on a t.v., I’m turning in the boxes and cancelling that bill. My iPad is my link to the outside world, friends and family. In the last year I twice drove myself to stay and hike in Yellowstone National Park, visited my family in the Midwest, flew to Germany 🇩🇪 for 10 days to visit in-laws, hosted close friends from Salt Lake City and spent a hundred hours working my large, steep yard and gardens. A friend once came from Portland, OR for a visit and asked me what there was to do here? 😮 I’m surrounded by mountains and wildlife right in my backyard and any direction in which I drive is gorgeous wilderness. We are the lucky ones who can enjoy being with ourselves in God’s quiet world. There is so much to experience, isn’t there? Love this channel and the views everywhere you go.

I began crocheting recently as a way to occupy my time and get my mind off some hardships we are currently going through. It has become very therapeutic to me. It has also given me a chance to stimulate my mind, relax before bed, and I love to raid the second-hand stores for yarn that would otherwise be tossed. I use the yarn to make clothing for myself, hats for friends, and also hats, scarves, and lap blankets for homeless and elderly folks. I'm always learning a new stitch, a new granny square, and new ways to put it all together to make small things I need, from baskets and blankets, to whimsical decorations for the various holidays.
Cottagecore to me is a form of self-care. It's not ignorance of the world around me and the difficulties I have to face; it's giving myself a moment of grace to be calm, take a deep breath, and be better equipped physically and mentally to jump back into life and do what needs to be done.
That is hands-down one of the most beautiful ways I have ever heard someone describe cottagecore ❤️ It makes me so happy to hear you're finding peace and purpose in it!

Everything you said about marrying the old with the new made so much sense and I agree with everything. I would also say this lifestyle brings a sense of accomplishment. I started a garden and started foraging this year. Of course I can buy food at the market, but when I can grow it or forage it myself, I feel so competent and not dependent on anyone for my own sustenance. What a great feeling! Love the message of this video. I guess I have been on my path towards this very end living a simple quiet life in the country enjoying doing my crafts. My life has been rich, raised six kids whom are grown with families of their own now. I yearn for slower days and quiet times just at home by myself doing creative things. This spring I will be building my crafting cottage in the woods because my home has been overrun with all my creative pursuits. It will be my quiet retreat to craft away the days. I didn't realize that the very things I hope to achieve are actually cottage core life style. I watched this video in hopes to understand what "cottage core" decor is all about as I ponder decorating my crafting cottage. I have always loved vintage things and consider myself an old fashioned woman because I am more of a traditionalist. I enjoyed this video with a cup of tea in my PJs for a slow start to my morning.

Your message is a good one lovely lady.💫 The more that we strive to create communities that are sustainable and lifestyles that are in tune with Nature's rhythms the better we will be and Mother Earth will be as well. May I point out that this may be a popular trend right now, and of course I hope that more young people will move their lives in this direction, however when I was in my twenties some 50 years ago we were doing the same thing... going back to the land, living a simple life, growing our own food, living as self sufficiently as possible. The world may not have known about this movement because back then we did not have the internet or even cell phones. You had to have been a part of this to know about it. Many blessings to all that choose to slow down and step into Mother Nature's rhythms while honoring Her as best we can through our conscious lifestyles.💫🕯🌺
It does seem to be a trend at this time, and since it is a positive, creative and healthy and way of life, I hope it continues. I guess you and I have lived our entire lives this way.
My Grandmother taught me many simple frugal ways that I have lived by all my life and these things make me happy. Making quilts and rugs out of old clothes . Crocheting different things. Bread making is an ancient art that has been handed down in my family for hundreds of years and I enjoy the art of it, grinding the wheat fresh and making it by hand and eating it with a simple stew. I also love growing a garden every year and enjoying being outside, again , my father and grandparents taught this toe and I love it very much.
As a guy, this is amazing! There is this famous ancient saying: "it is not wealthy who has the most, but who needs the least"

A big source of my depression is moving away from the countryside. I spent 2 months in northern Norway with a friend and I was extremely happy in the nature. Even though it was winter, which is suppodely really hard there.
It was cold, harsh and I loved it.
We even went ice swimming.
We didn't do stuff every single day, but I still felt good.
A few weeks after being back home in the city depression set in.

Well planned, expertly designed, knowledgeably styled and skillfully executed fantasies.
If someone else tends the animals, gets up 365 days a year to milk and feed, when mud and real cold are a reality, as would the hardship be of having to earn a living off the land...not all that romantic.
One winter we ran out of wood, and had no money, and a newborn and a 4 year old. Not always fuzzy, warm and cosy after all, depending on your circumstances.
But I think it is commendable that people find new value in forgotten skills, and adjust their lifestyles accordingly.

Hi Liz, this was really beautiful! I've been thinking a lot about this over the past few years - how to merge the past with the present to create a more balanced and beautiful future - and I've been doing my best to move toward that future. I don't yet have the land to grow my own food, and raise animals (coming soon!) but I've been getting most of my produce from local farmers, learning to sew, reading actual books, instead of being glued to an electronic device, and doing my best to get out into nature once a week. The first time I ever hea4d the term cottagecore, was when my friends came to visit. My home is acletic, everything was thrifted or gifted to me. Nothing matches, yet somehow it is cozy and inviting. I love reading, baking and crocheting, in fact I was crocheting as I watched this video. My brother furnished his home from big box stores, I find it cold, boring and just unwelcoming. Now that I know what to search, I can find more inspiration for design and lifestyle.

Hello to you I too enjoyed the video, I have been living the lifestyle for many years now, crafting baking making my own clothes reusing unwanted items that are no longer considered stylish. I also have over the years developed my own style, prefer my own way of life, do not own a car walk most places any great distance I use public transport I grow my own food, I am vegan . I had not heard of Cottage core until a few months ago. I know lots of people who prefer to live a sustainable life style. Also it is a way of life for many people. Getting back to basics for some is necessary due to lack of funds.

Living slowly and with purpose, enjoyimg the smallest, simpler things is why I stopped rushing through life.

My, what an attractive way to live - particularly if that living were to include a beautiful, very cozy old home similar to the ones we toured with you.
All very remindful of the French and the way they tend to live slowly, striving to putting the stress inducing hubbub on the back burner by living a more deliberate, less processed, humane oriented existence. I very much like what I see in that & in what you are showing us in your videos too.

Your channel just popped up in my feed. I have been on a journey the last few years to relearn basic life skills like cooking from scratch, sewing, and living as Christ did while he was here: simply. Not much in the way of complications.

For me, cottagecore allows me to focus on the simple things and enjoy them. Because nowadays things like cooking or knitting are considered more of a time waster than a process that can bring pleasure.

I, too, am an older person. Both sides of my family had farmers, my father's family only did farming, and we are farming now. It isn't, and wasn't a hard way of life. There is lots of heavy work to be done, yes, but it is a lifestyle we want. As far as "cute" clothing, both my grandmothers sewed, as did my mother and I did for my nine children. We always wore nice clothing. Just because you work on a farm doesn't mean you can't wear things you like and feel good in. So, dress in stylish vintage clothing and know that it IS accurate! Even puffy sleeves!

In the middle ages, English nobles would dress up in order to idolize the days of King Arthur and the time when Britain was wild. Once the Industrial Revolution got going, painters began to romanticize the countryside and all that had been lost when people were pushed off their farms and crowded into dirty cities that grew even more polluted over time. People felt that something had been lost and you really see a movement to picnic out in the country or take a vacation there, because it was felt to be more healthy and relaxing. Then the Victorians romanticized the medieval period. And so on.
Don't let anyone tell you that you're doing something wrong even if you do romanticize the past and/or rural life. People have been doing that forever. It seems to be quite normal; part of being human and part of the natural ebb and flow of humanity from rural areas to cities, then back again.
Hell, even the Romans during the Empire talked longingly about the early days of the Republic and how there was less income disparity and even the powerful men farmed their own land. This was seen as something that built character and they were viewed as more manly men compared to the wealthy and indolent men of the the later ages.
Cottagecore is pointing towards the future, because the future is the past....

I don't really understand how cottagecore works economically. I understand it is a lifestyle people want. Is it really just like an extended holiday in a country cottage? I think I saw a car at the start of the video? I assume the people who do it have an urban life they earn money from?
I grew up on a farm and that was really hard work. I am interested in cottagecore as it is a social phenomenon that is beginning to spread out into urban dweller's attitudes about work and what they eat and their relationship with the countryside. On that later point I don't think that urban people who like the cottagecore aesthetic or some version of it understand how growing food to feed billions of people cannot be done in the way that the cottagecore aesthetic suggests.
Are there men involved or is it just women? How does modern technology reconcile with it?
EDIT: By the way I live in an old house, have no car and am semi retired on the edge of a town with just my wife and like gardening so I am somewhat already attuned
Hi Brian, thanks for stopping by! ❤️ To me cottagecore is more about incorporating elements of a rural lifestyle and maybe even a historically inspired lifestyle into 21st century everyday life. To me it's neither about doing it as a vacation nor about permanently living in the past. I have an electric car and make a living as a computer scientist, but I enjoy learning about past centuries, buying my veges at the farmer's market, living in old houses, foraging for edible plants in the forests and I prefer the quiet of the countryside over the noise of the city. You are 100% right - this is not a lifestyle that would feed billions of people, it's about uniting elements of past and present as well as urban and country life 😊
How does one pay for this lifestyle? For a year… for decades
Without tyranny however, cottage life could have been so much better. Homesteading has so many practical lessons. I see your generation looking more to the past for solutions to environmental degradation, not for political inspiration. I'm glad you see it the way you do,
Thank you! ❤️ Yes, there were many factors in the past that made farm life more difficult than it would've had to be or than it would be today. I completely agree that just looking to the past cannot be the solution for the future, we can draw inspiration but will have to find a new path.
