This is the first of a two-part series on the symbolism of the zodiac where we spend about 20-minutes explaining each of the signs. Part 2 will be released sometime next month.
This is episode 175 of The Astrology Podcast, and it features astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan.
Our goal was to do a really deep-dive into the astrological symbolism of each of the signs, and this was meant as a followup to episode 64 of the podcast where we did the same for the seven traditional planets.

As a Gemini, i feel that rather than flipping opinions, i feel that I always need to be learning. The curious nature is a constant urgency. I may learn quickly but may also forget information quickly as well!

Gemini's a way of life
These are the best zodiac sign videos there is on youtube, i love how the three of you work together, such great combined energy. Having a natal retrograde mercury, i find it hard for things to sink in straight away, i feel like my minds a sieve at times, i have to go over and over things repeatedly, but these videos have helped me more than any zodiac sign books i've read.
I hear you, we all learn in different ways and for me, watching videos is way easier than reading books (depending on the subject) but also, astrology is so rich in concepts that you have to go over and over the same basic principles to capture as much as possible. I have 20 years of experience and here I am, listening to the most basic concepts just because there is always a new perspective to consider...

Same. But I'm about 10+ years in. This year is so profoundly fucked-up that it pushed me to geek out on Astrology for a week. The 2020 prediction video is amazingly helpful for seeing how things work in a general way.

Mutable signs also represent the end of a season and preparation for the next. Gemini (end of spring prepares summer) Virgo (end of summer prepares fall) Sag (end of fall prepares winter) Pisces (end of winter prepares spring) changeable, adaptable, flexible.
What about cardinal signs?

Hi John, I thought one of the important points in the video is that we were meant to get away from associating seasons from the point of one hemisphere alone? At the equator and southern hemisphere the seasons are wet and dry and reversed, respectively.

Geminis see duality (as opposed to Libras who see balance). We see the male and female aspects of things, which is why we can come across as duplicitous. This male-female duality is the source of the androgynous quality of Gemini (in addition to the androgynous quality of Mercury). Prince, for example, was a Gemini with Scorpio rising, and he said on Oprah once that he had two people inside of him- one male and one female.To me that is the essence of Gemini- this awareness of both sides of the coin at all times.
The thoughts on Cancer are really interesting, and I like how one of them mentions that crabs will move in a zig zag or indirect route to get where it's going and I thought about water and how it doesn't always move in a straight line but it always takes the path of last resistance. It shows us that these aren't always the same thing, many times a straight line is the path of *most* resistance, and much of eastern philosophy centers on this idea. If a straight line is through a brick wall, Aries will go straight through it, but Cancer wil flow around it, and encompass it, and have conserved all of its energy in the process.

Funny thing is Cancer will go the straight line or right through a brick wall route. Yet they won't do this for themselves. They will instead do it for someone else or to save or rescue a loved one in particular. All other times it's most likely the sideways route.

The segment about Leo was so accurate - to add to what you said, Madonna a person with Sun and Venus in Leo wrote the song "Spotlight" where she sings "everybody is a star, everyone is special in their own way..." which are almost the exact words you used for Leo! And many of her songs have this theme of how we are all special and how to shine... Also, Austin, thanks so much for putting in question the constant use of gender words to describe planets and signs in astrology - so refreshing and I think we should all start using the words Ying and Yang rather than feminine and masculine to take the emphasis off physical gender... language is so important to thinking!
From what I understand re: Virgo, the glyph MP stands for "materia prima" which means raw material, not necessarily about chastity but definitely about unaltered or purity

my favorite part of the whole video is when Austin says "i can do elements in a minute" and then proceeds to perfectly summaries the elements in almost one minute exactly😮
I appreciate so much that Austin is a cancer rising (as am I) because he will often talk about a planet in a particular house and that helps me understand it for me so much more.

Cancer Sun and Moon here. Great analysis. I'm very protective of the vulnerable and defenceless- something swells within me when I see them being abused and I can't allow them to go unprotected. This extends all the way down to very mundane situations such as someone being left out of a conversation- I will notice it and go out of my way to include them. I'm generally private and emotionally (and physically) guarded but I open up when I see sincerity or vulnerability in others- I'm responsive to that and when openness is given I reflect it back- and I enjoy those deeper conversations rather than surface chatter. I work as a therapist so it's useful that we Cancerians excel in intuiting others emotions (the crabs psychic antenna) and helping them process them; which is essentially what nurture is- you're taking something that's in a vulnerable state and creating (cardinal) an environment that facilitates their growth back to strength. I like seeing people thrive and feel emotionally nourished after our sessions. I love all forms of water, especially the ocean and I've always had a profound love for the Moon and the night. On the downside I'm definitely moody and it's usually a consequence of me being in a situation or place that feels uncomfortable or unsafe to me (emotionally). As Austin pointed out those parameters can shift though. I can also take things too personally, which is something I'm working on. One thing that wasn't mentioned in the video was the nostalgia and the artistic aspect of that. A lot of Cancer artists and musicians have a sort of nostalgic, emotionally evocative, "makes you reminisce" type feel to them. Lana del Rey and Adele (Cancer Rising) are good examples. Cardinal water gets you in touch with your emotions and internal world. Anyway really great video!
I love listening to podcasts of astrology to gain a deeper understanding of the signs, and to spread the more in depth information towards the signs to my friends. I also am using this to analyze my own placements in my chart to really understand what they mean. I’m thinking of becoming an astrologist, but I’m not 100% sure.

I'm in shock! I don't see Taurus as selfish and snobish at all...this is so cliche. The closest people of my life have several Taurus placements. They are extremely giving and nurturing (Taurus is the exaltation of the Moon!) and very down to earth. Refinement and good taste shouldn't be confused with a snobbish attitude. But some people just don't appreciate these qualities, depending on their own charts and preferences. Bad qualities would be: strong tendency towards inertia and stagnation...and also, despite being consistent on what they like doing, they don't have discipline on doing things that might be important for them, but that they don't enjoy doing. They only do what they want.
Well... Taurus can be very rigid sometimes about what they want and they do tend to have expensive taste and this can definitely come off as a bit unwavering or snobbish to some... but hey we like what we like and won't settle for anything less because we have clearly defined values. I'm A Taurus sun and definitely see this...
So I know 2 taurean Moms who hit their kids like literally bang them against the wall.. they are someone else to the public and indoors not so nice or nurturing. They love luxury and the good things and can manipulate it out of their husbands.

I had my first cancerian figure experience via my uncle who was a sun in cancer, he was very wounded in early life but possessed extremely caring qualities he would buy me multiples of one gift or treat. He lost his mother at an early age and was raised by his sister...and he kept looking for motherly figures so he ended up marrying someone much much older than him who was an alcoholic and absent mother to her own children. Ironically they had two kids one was a cancer boy. My uncle asked us to bury him In his mothers /my grandmothers grave if he died. He married his 2nd wife and at some point they had an argument where she mocked him for saying he'd kill himself. That night he ended up shooting himself in the heart...and we had my grandmothers grave opened up and buried him there. After that we all felt a sort of peace like he finally was where he needed to be, with his mother. He was only 33. I also noticed many sun in cancers kill themselves, Robin William and Anthony Bourdain are some examples. It always comes as a shock because they are so nurturing.
What an extremely sad story. I hope your last statement isn't true. My 10 year old daughter is cancerian.

"Self-actualization" vs. "World-optimization" phrasing from Austin (in contrasting Leo & Virgo) was really helpful and resonated with me. I have prominent placements of both and definitely feel the stretch/tension of wanting to focus on both of these objectives.

I’m a libra rising with Saturn on my ascendant and I’ve always been drawn or attracted to fire signs but in the end their vitality and charm fizzles out pretty quickly because of their brash, selfish, inconsistent ways. This was too funny to hear.

Could you please do an equivalent show on the house meanings? There's so much variation in the meanings ascribed by different people. I listened to your 2014 podcast on the topic but you didn't run through all the specific meanings you find useful in that, or ones that you've come across empirically. It was mainly about the fact that there isn't a consistently good system or conceptual foundation for any of them, which left me wondering.

I love how in this first half you are all very energetic and vibrant and in the second half, there is this sense of tiredness and heaviness because of maybe the heavier nature of the fall/winter signs. Both episodes are fantastic, but you did all of the spring, summer signs in this episode and fall winter signs in the other episode and the whole vibe of spring/summer vs fall/winter comes through in your subtle differences in energy. I know there was debate about what order to do them in. Hearing both episodes, I see now how it could be considered more balanced to start with cancer/middle of summer/summer solstice. Then you would get to talk about cancer Leo and virgo libra Scorpio and sag in one and cap aqua Pisces aries taurus and gemini in another.

Chris, this was amazing btw! And I'm so glad you brought up the "corrective element" as you move from one sign to the next. I think about this All the Time!!! I think there's definitely something there that is intentional and as I've spent time with the progression between signs, I think it also boils down into how masculine completes/corrects feminine AND feminine completes/corrects masculine. The two are woven together in the cycle itself where the Universe is "setting us up for success" so to speak like it's giving us the best possible chance for remaining balanced within ourselves as we make our laps around the Sun. Depending on each individual's mutability, we truly can bring to life each part of ourselves as the Sun moves through each sign. The masculine and the feminine and how we must balance both within ourselves to find true "Health" is soooooooo fascinating and I feel like the Sun's course is naturally breeding balance aka Health. Thank you thank you thank you for your channel and your work and the literal ABUNDANCE of free High Quality content you have provided here. I feel like discovering your channel is literally hitting the jackpot. So, I guess what I'm getting at is You Are A Jackpot.
