10 years later and both Ontario and Quebec have gasoline and diesel being shipped by rail car because they still refuse to build their own refinery capacity to handle their demand. Gasoline is way more volatile than what was in these rail cars.

How? I'm from Toronto and heard about it when it happened. I'm currently in Lac-Megantic, QC for a delivery and was hoping to be close enough to see what became of that exact area.
I have never seen such a horrific event, nor have I ever seen a worse railroad. The Montreal Maine and Atlantic railway has tainted railroading history through greed and negligence. Edward burkhardt and Robert grinrod don’t care what they did is wrong, and they didn’t face any consequences for the accident.
'Oil pipelines are dangerous, and we don's want them in our province", they said 10 years ago! This is what you get because of that! Couldn't' have happened to a "nicer" province!
In all fairness I’d say Canadian pacific who now owns the line through lad mega tic is a much safer company the Montreal Maine and Atlantic who was involved in the accident
Not the one that derailed... The railway still operates there, because tons of businesses need rail transport to operate. If there weren't customers to keep the railways operating they wouldn't still be there. It was a multi level failure, but does not negate the requirement for rail transport.

@seanolaocha940 Perhaps Quebecors should rely less on others for their standard of living. When Quebec can actually include the profits from hydro and stop cooking the books and screwing Canadians, then they can be concerned.
Crazy, I was 14 when the accident occurred. I can’t remember hearing about it. This was a tragedy for sure. I wonder how the engineer is doing.

They had refinery, but the oil comp decided to move them in the 80s. Nothing to do with Qc or Ont.
This is another reason for renewables. You don't get this kind of scenario.

Is there a government at any level that isn't corrupt in Canada?
No
Hard to believe it's been 10 years ago.
Why the hell would that MM&A railway leave a whole train of crude oil unattended ?
A series of goofs, and bad management.
Because the conductor is human, and humans have to sleep. Shocking I know...
I had no knowledge of this until tonight.

Worst journalism of the decade.
Most oil pipeline disasters get unreported by the news, also do you even know the causes of the derailment

Yes, it is--- MM&A was a fly by night operation.

@hyoutdoors7054 I'm currently up the road, at Maxi, but not able to make it down to see the area. Nice to know Musi-Cafe is up and running again
I thought the worst train in canadian history was the hinton train collision?

The whole reason MMA was moving oil was because the pipeline couldn't keep up with demand.
