One thing that strikes me is, Eddie plays it so fast that the riff almost sounds like the audio equivalent of a spinning wheel where the spokes look like they're going backwards!
I can honestly say, that I have searched for lesson videos on this song, many times over the last 6 years, and never seen this video... spot on demonstration.
Absolute cracking good lesson...you nailed it Perfect 💯...very very difficult intro...muting on the A string and note sustain on the D string very important. Excluding Eruption...this in my opinion is eVh' signature moment on VH1 🎸🎨 🎶🎵🎼
My pleasure, it's an awesome song indeed and very few people get it up to speed with the swing holding strong, Eddie is simply amazing! Thanks for commenting about the tone. I'm going straight into an audio interface [the blue thing to the left] and putting fx on post recording. distortion/room reverb/eq/big reverb with predelay. i also add a lot of trebles and high mid prior to distortion, seems to add power and a new strings sound. Any other q's please ask, thanks!
Nicely done! There's a glut of tutorials for this song floating around UA-cam, but you're one of a handful of guys who plays the main riff convincingly. And yours is by far the clearest explanation for how to do it.
Thanks man! I wanted to learn this lick the second I heard it. Which for some reason just happened in my life. Thank you for explaining the how's and how not's so simply/effectively.
My pleasure - thanks for your comment. I loved this killer riff the first time I heard it too, probably when I was 13... when my mp3 player's on shuffle in the car and this song comes up, I automatically go to the volume knob and turn it up!
you are the first person on here i have found that plays this right!... there are so many people that teach this but none of them sound correct to my ears
I dont think there's any one who can give a better guitar lesson than you on UA-cam.............you are naught a million words..(which is so irritating when there naught saying anything helpful)...but you are..... showing and perfectly deciphering and disecting the actual picking attack highlights that make the articulative riffs.......please keep sharing your videos....awessome Video brother.....your awesome bro
Wow thanks so much for your kind words! Please feel free to check out our other videos! I'm making the part 2 of the forgotten guitar riffs real soon so stay tuned. JM
Dude... thank you. You caught the swing. Everyone else manages to make it sound like fucking Judas Priest. Good man. You deserve to play with Hendrix in the great hereafter.
Thanks for sharing this good lesson on an excellent tune! (One of my personal favorites). Aside from your 'right on' transcription, the tone your getting seems to capture a nice "Van Halen" esque emulation of his brown chunky tone. May I ask what your using to achieve this tone?
Thanks Mark! Guitar is MIJ '88 strat with a tex mex humbucker. Though I think the tone is mianly due to the time I spent mixing it to the record - eq's distortion reverbs etc rather than the guitar/interface.
+Monox602 I've been wanting to do that for a while but it's tricky being a Dad and with my day-job etc.... For now I'll try to explain as best I can: I use a jcm900 plugin for the distortion, EQing the tone before it goes into that because my interface is a pretty flat sound. Then I keep adding EQs, sometimes up to 10 plugins to get rid of any nastiness and accentuate the good stuff [comparison to the original is key here!]. Then I add a touch of room reverb, as short as poss to simulate the sound being recorded through a mic. then comes the big reverb with plenty of predelay. Other than all the above it's all in the fingers LOL! If you've made it this far without being bored or confused, WELL DONE!!! Good luck in getting the tone, JM
+TheSutcliffeBrothers - yea I totally understand not having a lot of extra time when having kids. Can you tell me what plug-in your using for your amp and eq's? I have bias fx and guitar rig 5. I also use mostly waves plug-ins for my eq and reverb. Thanks in advance for your help.

+TheSutcliffeBrothers - I used the waves plug-ins as well for reverb and eq. I've been using Bias fx for the amp. I just need to figure out the best way to pan everything and what reverb works best. I'm close but yours sounds dead on.
No amp here, just straight into an interface and using vst plugins to create the tone - distortion, eq [lots of] and reverb with pre-delay. I'll be recording a tribute to Eddie tomorrow, all being well and then a follow up video explaining the tone. Dialled in a great Women and Children tone the other day which I'm keen to record!!
Eb tuning on this one - there's an annotation to this effect but I forgot to mention it when I recorded the vid! And yes, Jeff Healey rocked like nobody else! That T-shirt is now worn out so I'm on the hunt for a new one!
TheSutcliffeBrothers Thanks again for this lesson, I gave the tune a shot. I would post a video response but since YT doesn't have that feature anymore, here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/rUP9RGcwREg/v-deo.html
Excellent..6 years later..wheres the next lesson?
your tone is absolutely spot on there friend, wonderful

@@TheSutcliffeBrothers Still the best "lesson" video on UA-cam hands down. Deraps does a pretty mean cover though... ;-)
This is the BEST I'm the One lesson on UA-cam. 45K views and only 470 subscribers? Something isn't right.

Great instruction on that opening swing riff. Bravo! I was really struggling with that.

Absolutely amazing. Your tone is right on!!!!!!
Thanks!!
Brilliant explanation
Holy crap awesome ! You explained something I never got .... Pulling off to open strings
Yeah much easier for speed and that's how he does it. If you tried to pick every note you'd need a monster of a right hand!!!

Nice job, and yeah, the swing is dead-on
that pickup you use ?
great tone !!!
quericoesteyogur It's a Fender Tex Mex humbucker I picked up a while back but to be honest the tone is more from detailed EQing and reverbs. Thanks!
You should make clear that the 4th note which is the 7th fret D is a hammer on, not a "picked note"
Curious what you're playing through? Tone is very good
