    I can understand your frustration that "nothing new happens" or changes, but that in itself is the beauty of Dark. One of the core ideas of the show is that time is deterministic and no matter how hard the characters try to alter outcomes or change events, they can't since everything that has happened will always happen. This episode is very important, not necessarily because it advances the story, but more because it serves as an expository episode explaining the reasons why certain events had to occur the way they did (i.e. why Michael had to hang himself) and why certain characters act the way that they do. Things do start developing more in the future episodes, but keep watching! Dark truly is a masterpiece.

    • @michaelklaus
      @michaelklaus 4 роки тому +5

      Actually the question whether or not time is deterministic is a metaphor for the question if we can change things in our own life.
      So answering the question now would be rather pointless.
      People simply expect that time travel is a metaphor for what we would change if we could which basically EVERY OTHER time travel story shows.
      Eerily none of the time travlers on either side ever consider time to be deterministic... but that is because they are told that it's not... but these time travelers are simply Jonas, Claudia, Noah, Helge, Bartosz, Hannah... who are all told by either Jonas or Claudia. Most importantly Jonas and Claudia tell themselves and each other without ever gathering any evidence for their statements.
      Just like in heroes (and another show that currently eludes me) time travel is used to shove a large piece of retroactively revelaing something about the exposition that was wrong.

    Do you remember back in episode 1 of season 1, when Martha hooks up with Bartosz and then says to Jonas that "what happened last summer was nothing"?

    • @michaelklaus
      @michaelklaus 4 роки тому +24

      Interesting that they seemed to have forgotton about it completely. Other people were enraged about Martha hooking up with Bartosz when she clearly had a relationship with Jonas.
      But here you realize that it was so complicated.
      That's IF you realize that this is indeed the backstory of episode one instead of still wondering what the beach scene changes.
      So from his POV Martha hooked up with him a day before his father committed suicide. He probably never called her since they were not close enough for him to seek her comfort. He then went into therapy at a psych ward.
      From her perspective Jonas was hitting on her talking about true love before his father killed himself. Although he had claimed that they were soulmates or something he never called and went to France where he, according to his best friend, laid some french girls... probably with his "we are perfect for each other" technique.

    Important to remember that the time travel we've been seeing in the show is purely deterministic which doesn't allow for multiple timelines. That's why it's a mindfuck.

      We shall see. The show isn't over yet.

    • @michaelklaus
      @michaelklaus 4 роки тому +3

      To be precise: so far it could be completely deterministic. Ulrich's actions make a strong argument for determinism. Tannhaus assumes it must be deterministic. And yet for some reason Claudia, Noah, Jonas and Stranger-Jonas all claim that it is not... although none of them ever tried to make a massive change. They all claim that the things that look deterministic simply happen the same in each iteration of the time loop. So we still have to wait and see... and this is apparently what the guys do not realize: A deterministic time loop with nothing ever changing is not only an option. It is the better option storytelling wise.

    I think you guys forgot Jonas believed that his father's suicide was the event to create the knot and stopping it would mean undoing everything and setting time straight and normal. In other words, it would erase his existence. So honestly, allowing himself a little moment with his crush before going to never having been born is not that shocking.
    I believe Claudia basically told Jonas that it doesn't matter if he exists or not, the knot still will be there. So Adam lied to him that by erasing himself he would erase the knot. Not sure why I'm written this, you're already in season 3 and know what she meant :P

    Rubella is a childhood viral illness also known as German measles (although it's not related to the measles virus). The illness is usually mild in children. Complications are more common in adults, and include arthritis, encephalitis, and neuritis. But the real danger from rubella is to unborn children.
    _A woman who contracts rubella infection during pregnancy can pass the infection to the developing fetus. Such pregnancies are at risk of spontaneous abortion or premature birth. If the fetus survives, the child may suffer from a wide range of birth defects, including deafness, eye defects, cardiac defects, mental retardation, bone lesions, and other abnormalities. Together, the defects are known as Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). Of children whose mothers are infected during their first trimester of pregnancy, studies suggest that between 50% and 90% will suffer from CRS._

    Like others said we learn a chunk of backstory that smoothens the odd backstory of the first season. So how about instead of stacking up your expectations about instant change time travel mechanics that won't happen in this show you might instead focus on what is revealed to you?

    That leap year joke just blew my mind! And now I've got an amazing idea that I guess could be some amazing script addition. Judge for yourself. I watched the entire series, actually I watched it five times (so far), so I know the spoilers, but I'm just saying that my idea could be a pretty sick addition of how things might have happened.
    In this show "our days" events is a "future", relatively to "present day" 1986, and time travelling happens in 2019 AND 2020, a year/season after. So they was travelling in 2019 in season 1, but then they continue to travel a year later, in 2020 in season 2.
    2020 WAS actually a leap year. Now imagine that. On February 29, 2020 they could travel back in time. But since there's no February 29 33/66/99 years back or forward from 2020, they would end up in the closest to "33 years rule back or forward" year to 2020, which is February 29, 1888. Actually, later in the show they showed us that exact year. Now imagine this. Some local folks in 1888 could notice them and think that they're all witches and evil sorcerers, since they're all look unusual, and they showed up out of nowhere. Some local(s) might have seen them appearing out of thin air. Some local authorities might wanna burn them all, like witches, even if it's not medieval anymore, starting with Jonas, their leader, on the bonfire (or whatever it's called in English, not my native language). Jonas is burned and nearly dead, and all the others of them are next. That's how Jonas could became "burned" Adam. Then they scream about they will tell them everything if they spare Jonas and the rest of them. They told them, some local authorities (not just regular people), about how they ended up here, about time travelling, and this bunch of high-ranking local folks, wether Jonas and his friends initially want this or not, later would became the first ever members of Sic Mundus, people who knew about time travelling, forming a secret society under Jonas' leadership, since only him and his friends know about how to travel.
    The only plot hole here is they stopped burning "witches" in Europe somewhere around 1600s, but still… That could be local authorities' way of illegaly find out things and make Jonas and his friends talk. Another plot hole in my idea is in 2020 they're all teenagers, and teenage Jonas can't be burned, since middle age Jonas still doesn't look like Adam. Yet. And middle aged Jonas and friends are stucked in 1920s, not in 2020. But maybe Jonas and Co could travel from the year 1920 (but than this shold happen in 2019, in season 1, 'cause they're first travelled in 1920s in season 2, and the year was 1921 already, travelling from 2020), or the next leap year, 1924, where they're all stucked in for quite some time canonically, to 1788 from 1920 (or 1792 from 1924), 132 years back (33 + 33 + 33 + 33, to the closest leap year). And it's much more believable that 1700s' people might wanna burn them like witches. That would be some amazing alternative way to explain how Jonas was disfigured and how the original members of Sic Mundus are the people from far past (even against Jonas' initial will to tell them about time travelling). But Jonas is still the original creator of this secret society, and they should listen to him.
    That all might be season3 alt. Martha's cruel joke to 1920s' Jonas and friends, suggesting them to time travel on February 29 while escaping herself from their time with her orb time machine and not travelling with them.

So, if Michael doesn’t kill himself, then Jonas doesn’t end up bringing him back for two reasons. He doesn’t know he has to do it, and second, his future self won’t be there

      @Mr. Penguin Hey now, no need for snark. The show is obviously very complex and it's normal for people to be confused. This is a very fair question that I've wondered about and have seen posed many times on the Dark subreddit. I do think the best explanation is, as mentioned, the gang doesn't ever decide to go the caves until after Michael kills himself, so if he didn't kill himself, there is a chance the kids would never explore the caves and Mikkel would never go back in time.
