It’s a real pity all this televised ultra cool night club style entertainment has gone. I miss watching and listening to these classy swinging tunes on those dark cosy evenings watching TV with my mother when I was a little kid in the 60s and early 70s❤
Never saw Bobby Troupe before now. Been a big fan of London for a long time but Troupe, damn dude. I feel embarrassed for the state of pop music now. Yes, even in 64, this was pop. Crazy how music has devolved.
There's a lot of amazing music out there these days, if you're willing to look for it. I'm in my early twenties, and the only reason I know who Julie Londin is is because of people like Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish
Since 1955, so MANY singers (men and women) have tried to sing "Cry me a river" but there's no one since Julie who could really sing this song, her masterpiece -- she owns this song! Always will.
I don’t think there ever was a singer for a long time he could come up through the ranks of Julie London perhaps Peggy Lee but Julie was phenomenal!! Julie had the sensuality and bravura that was just so understated yet she was just totally brilliant on stage!
Once again this video is proof positive that I was born too late. I was a babe in arms when this show aired. However, seeing as though it’s Thanksgiving night 2023, I am thankful and grateful for the person that uploaded this show here. I’m also thankful that my parents exposed me to this kind of music. Thanks mom & dad, you two were cool cats that knew what great music was all about. ❤
…..you’d enjoy Vegas…. Lots of old lizard ars where the rat pack hung out..all still there. If you have money, Vegas needs more Art Lovers. Eli Eve me, there’s a great crowd here now. It’s a real City, and it’s beautiful.
I really wish some of her other specials were available to watch. I know she did specials in color in '65 and '68, as well as many other TV appearances in which she sang as late as 1971, but only a few clips are available.
You will never see this kind of show on television now days...what a shame. Bobby Troups segment is mindblowing. 55 years later it still sounds fresh and exciting. Incredible!! Dennis Budimer is still with us in los angeles. His solos are amazing and ahead of their time!!! Thanks for posting!!!
incredible concert. never seen before. she really was a jazz singer, not just pop. i dont know how i overlooked her all these years. the guitarist dennis budimer has been well respected by fellow musicians in los angeles since the 60's. ahead of his time, he never sought the spotlight like others. he has (still alive in his seventies) incredible technique and could pull off coltrane like runs on his guitar. he played in chico hamiltons group alongside eric dolphy! there is a great album he did with bud shank (on baritone sax) with gary peacock. he has some incredible solos on that.. its called "new groove" he also did several albums (hard to find) on john william hardys label revelation out of los angeles. it was a treat to see bobby troup stretching out, heard a bit of nat cole and ahmad jamal thrown in. great stuff!! thanks for sharing such a great video. have never seen these great artists at such length before. wonderful!!!!
I really enjoy her beautiful sound, its the kind of sound that forces my mind to concentrate on the important things in life. Tne kind of sound that makes you cry a painful sound
Miss London was also terrific on the television series "Emergency," in which she co-starred with her husband and fellow jazz performer Bobby Troup, a show produced by London's previous spouse, actor/producer Jack Webb.
So nice to have this again.I bought it many years ago at a record fair,on VHS tape and do not have it or the means to play it right now. Someone sent me Cry Me A River from it a few days ago,and I could not remember who it was playing guitar. Now we know it is Dennis Budimir.whose LPs I have a few of at home, some I think multitracked.
Julie was always underconfident about her "thimbleful" of a voice, but man her timing was spot on and the feel, soooo sweet. She had a piano-shaped pool in her backyard and she'd have parties where jazz folks would congregate and make a little music. Pretty much where I want to go when I die.
This is so special, I want you to know how generous you are for sharing this masterpiece with everyone! Hard to imagine that for some this was the coming of the Beatle.
How do I, and Will can I convey the gratitude. Was the director of this TV show, is my father. My father passed away 10 years ago, I am glad to mention the father's point of view.
I am into vinyl and one day I came across her record Julie is her name, I wasn't sure but I loved the cover so much I thought at the very least I will have a great image. I can't tell you how glad I was that I bought it. I knew alot of the songs I just never knew who originally sang them. That's one of the reasons that I love digging through old records, I might not know what I am buying at first but after I set the needle on the record and listen to it (from beginning to end) I might only hear one song that I remember but it is such a thrill. It's like I'm rediscovering it for the first time/hidden treasure. Anyway I have the original pressing that still plays and sounds great. If you even like her a little (as if you could only like her a little) I highly recommend listening to "Julie is her name" (on vinyl if possible) from beginning to end it is soothing and tranquil, you will not regret it. Especially nowadays, I think it is important to take a little time to unwind.
Aloha and thank you for sharing this video. She has an incredible voice. Her style, technique and presentation is mesmerizing, not to mention her outstanding beauty. What a talent she was❤️👏🏼🎶💋.
Nice that Bobby learned a few words of Japanese for this concert there in Japan! I didn't know he could sing and play that Yamaha piano so well (great chords)! Could act also (Emergency). Talented guy! The quartet on this show is great too.
Listening to Julie London at The Latin Quarter (1964) which was located in Nagatocho, Tokyo.....I can walk there from my place in Akasaka. The 1960s still had class before the "revolution" marked the beginning of the end for the U.S. The Japanese (including my wife) know class and quality when they hear it though they may not understand the English. Great CD-- highly recommended though not sure if its available in the U.S. The CD is somewhat different from this recording but it definitely has a lot of the same content. "Exclusive Julie London Bobby Troup & His Combo 22-23/25-26 May New Latin Quarter"....
I think Webb was also a class act, wonderful of him to give work to his former wife and her then-husband (Troup) so they could support their family. Webb, it seemed, was a real dad figure to so many actors in Hollywood, giving jobs on all his productions to so many up & coming actors, as well some dependable character actors that were virtually a stock company for him. But London as head nurse "Dixie McCall" on "Emergency" was a pillar of strength for the hospital staff and young paramedics.
Apart from Julie's and Bobby's personality, looks, talent and professionalism, Jack Webb and Julie London also had a child--so it wasn't that he merely gave work to her and Bobby so they could support "their" family. It was more a his, hers and theirs thing.
What a great voice! I've admired her from the first time I heard her, sometime around 1955, 6, or 7, I have her first ("Julie is her name" I think, )album that I bought one of those years, still have it! I saw her in person somewhere along the way but I can't remember just when, anyway, THANKS FOR POSTING ALL THESE ALBUMS so I don't have to get out my old LPs! This is a rare program! She was very introverted and didn't really like performing in public, would much rather just record her songs. So you can see she's a good actress besides vocalist. I watched her on Emergency -- thought she was great in that too. Of course, Bobby Troup was very talented also!
Such a flood of artist went to Japan in the mid 60s It was just a point the entertainment carousal pasted by on its way around Cool driving jazz from one of the best in the business Oh and hubby to
I was surprised to discover a version of "Tenderly" recorded by rockabilly artist Eddie Cochran (one of my faves), which I have yet to hear. This song sure has been recorded a lot, seems to be one of these standards such as "I Get A Kick Out Of You," and "Just in Time" that has been covered to death. I agree with you, though, Julie London's version is superb. I think Miss London could have sung the Manhattan phone book and made it interesting with her sultry swing.
I just begin to discover this female jazz singer; Much underrated, I think. Of course in jazz Billie Holiday remains the standard, but hey, Julie was a great great singer too, no doubt about it. In the cd series Real Gone Jazz, you can find her first 16 albums packed in 2 boxes of 4 cd's; Low prized, but high sound quality!
BH scarcely can be a standard in musical terms, pal. Her voice was narrow and technically dubious even if she became a sacred cow. If a standard is needed, then Ella Fitzgerald should be the one. NOT that BH sung badly, but her artistry is located more in the emotional territory than in the musical one
As a young freelance musician in 1964 I only got to hear her on radio. Now, to see what was going on musically on the tube back then fills a place in the heart.
Coffee + rainy nights + Julie London = Heaven

Julie could really swing. Never overdone. Always just right
That opener with the bass player was pure torch.
Absolute insanity. Mind blown.
Since 1955, so MANY singers (men and women) have tried to sing "Cry me a river" but there's no one since Julie who could really sing this song, her masterpiece -- she owns this song! Always will.
Julie London is superb. I think Dinah Washington sang CRY ME A RIVER quite well too.
I sing this song better than Julie. The slut stole my bit. This is my gig. I will be avenged.
Think your right but
Michael Buble did a good version of the song.

The great Dennis Budimir on guitar!!
Julie London one of the Most Underrated Jazz Singers Ever !!! Love ❤ Her :-:

Makes me want to re-connect my audiophile system. I literally had no idea she was a singer, thought she was just an actress on 'Emergency' TV series
This is great one found recently.
I discovered Julie in mymid teens . Her singing and looks blew me out of the ground, and it still does now I am in my 80s.
ABSOLUTE.... CLASS .
I really wish some of her other specials were available to watch. I know she did specials in color in '65 and '68, as well as many other TV appearances in which she sang as late as 1971, but only a few clips are available.
She was outstandingly beautiful.
So beautiful and boy could this lady sing❤️. Loved her on Emergency too. R.I.P.
This is SO 60's! It swings like hell, and Julie is just wonderful, and the arrangements just MUST appeal to new singers of today.
They both had a laid-back way of swinging that is hard to equal.
Dialectic Jazz Man !!!
too bad this class doesn't happen today
JULIE LONDON'S voice was sexy and beautiful THE MARILYN MONROE OF SINGING and still could hold her own with any singer.
We need more Julie London's in our era. . . Great voice and love the background music!
Julie London smoulders, and Bobby Troup is 10.c below- what a combo.
来日した時の貴重な映像ですね。いい仕事してるじゃないか TBS!
UNE GRANDE BEAUTÉ UNE VOIX À SE DAMNER EN UN.MOT SHE WAS À LADY ! ! 👌

Fly me to the moon with Julie. She had a beautiful voice and talent. 💫
Love her dancing. Simply elegant!
She answered on what’s my line that she wasn’t a dancer. Well she didn’t just stand there either.
I would agree...it was a signature song for her...she did it flawlessly!
There’s one Julie London. Beautiful Talented and the Queen of swinging Jazz.
She's a national treasure. She's so expressive my eyes don't know where to look !
Her voice is soft but has that romantic touch of appeal.
Her voice is ideal for that romantic serenading songs
What a treasure this recording is. I thank the Music Gods we have it & apparently, Japan.
My dad played her music, but I mostly know her and Bobby from the TV series, Emergency!
Very nice when music was exceptional
Awesome talent and great actress. Never to be forgotten
I love the smell of fragrant wood smoke: a pale echo of Julie London's fragrant smoky voice!
Ohhhhh my ! Miss Julie !! --------------No one like her--------ever. Well, maybe Peggy Lee -----------maybe. -----------WolfSky9, 73 y/o

One of the greatest album covers of all time, Julie London Round Midnight. The music kicks ass too!
Miss London was also terrific on the television series "Emergency," in which she co-starred with her husband and fellow jazz performer Bobby Troup, a show produced by London's previous spouse, actor/producer Jack Webb.
Hearing Julie London's voice was like being submerged in a jar of warm honey. A foxy, talented broad, yowza!

まさか歌っている姿を見れるとは!信じられない!
母親の影響でジャズが大好きな私は今50代前半。この映像の頃はまだ生まれていません
一番好きな彼女の歌ってる映像を見れて感謝します。本当にありがとう!
Stunning Julie!
It was so hard to get a copy of the Julie London Show. I was able to buy a VHS tape of it. That was a long time ago. This video posting is a blessing.
I heard her sing Cry Me a River on TV when I was about 6 and that's when I understood what sexy was.
I love female smooth voices,
she is on my top 5 list.
Amazing and elegant :)
