Long time rotary owner here, All this is just so Mazda doesnt have to build MORE EFFICIENT and QUICKER cars that happen to be EVs. What they are trying to compete with are EVs of 6 years ago, they cant compete with current or future EVs. My last 13b powered truck used 30 litres per hundred kilometers.

EVs are no more efficient than the mind of Buttigeg. EVs are heavier, requiring more energy to accelerate. Until we have enough Nuclear Power to throw it away at night, EVs need Fossil Fuels to recharge. I like Regenerative Braking, but those batteries are heavy.

@@aaronfreeman5264 we can argue about efficiency, but if you have solar panels at home, than it is already decided :-). But I totally agree that big batteries are very heavy, for now. I drive a PHEV, and it's perfect for daily driving in town with electricity, and if you want to go on a long trip, there you don't have to plan every stop, to refuel. Thinking about efficiency, well the rotary under normal circumstances is not that efficient, meaning people "use" the power they got and for racing the efficiency will go down, but in this case using it as a stable generator at an rpm close to optimal it should do the trick and also ensure a long motor life, because it is not reved cold, because the battery is used. I am waiting for Mazda putting a bigger version into a bigger car, like the CX-60 instead of the 2.5 engine.

@@adambeimel104 I like the idea of a rotary dynamo, but I understand Electric Transmissions work better on rail-roads. It's something about Weight; Do high frequency inductors weigh less?
If you have Solar Panels at home, THEN you are proven more gullible THAN I.

Thanks for sharing your experience as a long-time rotary owner! You raise some valid points about efficiency and competition. Do you think Mazda's rotary engine can carve out a niche in the EV market, or is it just a nostalgic throwback?

What Mazda needs to do is replace their Wankel Rotary design with the liquid Piston rotary design engine which is an "inside-out" Wankel that solves all the seal wear and oil burning pollution problems, because the seals are Mounted on the engine block so they can be directly lubricated with precisely the amount of oil needed.

Great point! The liquid piston rotary design sounds like a fascinating solution to some of the traditional rotary engine issues. 🔧 Do you think Mazda will consider innovations like this in their future designs? I’d love to hear more of your thoughts

Now I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this, but could you turn that rotary part into a twin rotor engine? Can the EV part and drop it in as new engines for older 7's and 8's?

@aaronfreeman5264 can the EV portion and use the Rotary portion in a rx7 or 8. And 3 rotor engines came in the cosmo. Unless you have a lot of cash and some fab experience most rx7s and rx8s are 2 rotor engines not 3. I'd love to have a 20b. But alas I have a 13b currently.

Mazda used the 12A and 13B in rx7s and rx8s, both are 3 lobe twin rotor engines. Both are the same size accross the face but the 13B are thicker making it a 1.3L engine.

Ha. Ha. Ha. Another unicorn idea to keep pumping oil. Let’s get real here. EVs are here to stay and they’re so much more efficient, cheaper to run and don’t pollute the earths atmosphere. What about radial engines? What about hydrogen engines? what about bio fuel? Anything to keep drilling for oil. Ha. Ha. Ha.

@@Mikere5 go on then - which counts am I wrong on? EVs are here to stay? More efficient than ICE engines? Cheaper to run? No emissions out of the tail pipe (there’s a clue there - an EV doesn’t have one). The oil lobby keeps selling the lies just as the tobacco industries kept telling lies for 50 years. Eventually, it’ll be the public who say they’ve had enough of being poisoned by ICE cars and buses just like the passive smokers who died because of active smokers in bars and theatres (remember Roy Castle died of lung cancer and never smoked in his life?) My EV used 14 tons of CO2 in its manufacture and thereafter - nothing. An ICE uses the same to manufacture but another 50 tons of CO2 during the first ten years of driving. Get real for the first time in your life.

@@aaronfreeman5264 sure, but there's more to any engine than math. With a wankel geometry the only way I could even imagine running "2 stroke" would be having ignition on both sides, intake and exhaust ports on both top and bottom, technically allowing 2 combustion events per e shaft revolution. Would be a nightmare to manufacture and run for what probably wouldn't result in significant gains though definitely would significantly increase unburned fuel and emissions, in addition to other issues that would arise. That's why I assumed you're joking as it's a ridiculous idea but would be cool to try I suppose.

@@aaronfreeman5264 ah that makes more sense, that would be more feasible. I was assuming wankel geometry as that's what your comment said. While it's hard exactly imagine what you're imagining, I'm seeing your rotary 2 stroke also making one combustion event per rpm since it's only a single pedal, which makes it like a wankel except with reduced performance as it wouldn't gain from a compression stroke.
