We are all sinners. Mother Teresa did not burn the child, she is dead, so why blame her. The Sister who did it, if she did, will be punished. Did you look at the number of children and people that were being fed and cared for, and those Sisters certainly don't live in luxury themselves. They feed, cloth, teach to the best of their ability, and house many, many, children and sick people, "the poorest of the poor." Perhaps those that condemn should go and help, and doctors and nurses could help. The Sisters are not doctors and nurses, and admit it. Yes, abuse happens, but children who are left to die in the streets, because they are not physically or mentally perfect, is that not abuse? These Sisters take care of those that others won't care for, or feed. I really have trouble with people who always look for the bad instead of finding the good and then help to make it even better. I am a practicing Catholic but I am not a fan of Mother Teresa or the Missionaries of Charity. There simply is no excuse for the slipshod work that they do. Mother Teresa needs to be de-,canonized (yes, there is precedent for this) and the Missionaries of Charity reorganized, with open reporting of finances, hiring or training nurses, elemtary sanitation methods, and an end to baptizing people against their will. I do strongly support their emphasis on prayer and evangelization, but voluntary evangelization only.

Christopher Hitchens has a well known anti-religious bias, but he seems to be quite correct in his criticism of Mother Theresa. It's good to get a second source of information.
Hitchens' book is called The Missionary Position.
A better second source would be some of the people who received their care. This charity has been around a long time, so there are adults who can be interviewed. Needs some first-hand comments from these people I think.

I have visited "Mother" Teresas home for the dying and destitute as well as the orphanage.
The first was horrrible.
You saw people literally dying i their beds while no one was caring for them.
And I gave 200 rupees in charity, not knowing what kind of person she really was or what the money was spent on.
She wouldn't be able to take any action unless she became part of the mission/charity (I'm not sure what the name of the institution is). A visitor can't just start helping patients on their own.

Insufficient and poorly trained workers and volunteers contribute to incidents certain news agencies prefer to report on , rather than how many people are being helped , or how many people don't have to die in the streets and are offered a very marginal bit of respect because of Mother Teresa . In the 1940s to 1960s a mission to just take in the dying, the lost, and poor and provide some type of custodial care would have been acceptable by the world.
After receiving assistance from the Government of India, the Government of Calcutta, Both Hindu and Christian volunteers from all over the world, monetary donations from all over the world, and starting services at other properties, orphanages, homes for disabled children and other homes, etc., people expect more modern care of infants, children, and adults.
If this order has the resources to expand their order of nuns all over the world, they obviously had the financial resources to open more modern facilities in India and provide more skilled care of adults, children, and infants. Their judgement and accountability/ stewardship regarding their financial resources was lacking.
Before worrying about opening up convents for expanding their order all over the world, they should have worked on transforming their facilities and their care of the poor, the sick, the suffering, and disabled children, as well as their orphanages in Calcutta. Their resources should have stayed in India to transform their apostolate and bring it to at least late 20th century standards ( We aren't even talking about 21st century standards in late 2019) Their nuns should have received formal education in the care of disabled children and they should have attended nursing school and obtained degrees in nursing. Their nuns should be be registered nurses.There needs to be organized care with records. Sanitation should be observed, as well..
The common sense thing would be to use your millions of dollars in funds to adapt your facilities for more modernized medical care, or pay for these people to go to the hospital to get what they need.

How I miss Hitchens 😭... RIP legend.
The irony is you’ve got a first world privileged blow hard (Christopher Hitchens) who smoked and drank alcohol to excess who earned a six figure sum selling certainty to militant atheists by criticising a frail old woman for not having first world medical facilities in a third world make shift hospice at a time when even the first world hospitals had no algorithms for palliative care and no algorithms for the safe and effective use of analgesics such as opioids until 1986 when (WHO) The World Health Organisation released guidance for safe and effective pain management.
Hitchens himself admitted in a UA-cam panel that these stories and half truths he created around mother Teresa were sensationalism and yet people still religiously hold onto them to stereotype moderate religious believers and confirm their prejudice and attrition bias against religious expression. The fact is that people believe these myths and lies about Mother Teresa with out fact checking Hitchens sources. Hitchens does not even present the other side of the argument and takes all the negative accounts on face value with very limited references and half truths. It’s hardly Earth shattering news that mother Teresa didn’t believe in abortion, contraception and took a stoic approach to worldly goods and discomfort. She was a Catholic nun for goodness sake who took vows of charity, poverty and chastity to give wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor. But Hitchens cleverly uses what is common knowledge regarding thousands of nuns and millions of Catholics to target just one person and prop up the rest of his half truths and speculation to demonise a frail old women who inspired and still inspires charity workers and volunteers around the world today to help the poor, sick and dying. What did Hitchens do with his life ? It’s so ironic that a man who supported the Iraq war. A man who supported a war that lead to the deaths of thousands of innocent men, women and children and turned out to be completely unjustified has the gall and hypocrisy to criticise Mother Teresa. It speaks volumes that he targets Mother Teresa when there are people like Mau and Pol Pot in the world. Hitchens rhetoric lacks credibility and he conveniently ignores the differences between an hospice run by nuns during this period of time in third world India and an hospital in the modern first world country he had the privilege to have lived in. Not to mention the fact that Hitchens literally lacks credibility himself as a witness and researcher as he is completely biased as it is common knowledge he is notorious for demonising religious expression using half truths, straw men and equivocation fallacies and has even been caught out as an historical revisionist who ignores facts to win arguments and promote intolerance and ignorance.
It’s a no win situation because even if the Catholic hospice could have got hold of opioids despite the tight laws on opioid usage in India Hitchens would have inevitably accused them of putting lives at risk because by the later standards you have to have a trained health care professional at all times monitoring the patients breathing after morphine usage as it is very dangerous and can cause respiratory depression. In fact for the first half hour after administering morphine or any IV opioids you can’t leave the bedside and have to monitor observations, particularly respiratory rate, blood pressure and pulse every five minutes as morphine is dangerous.
The Liverpool Care Pathway for the dying LCP wasn’t even introduced in first world hospitals/countries until the 1990s and was introduced because, during the 1990s, there was an increasing consensus in the UK medical community that standards of end of life care were still very poor and did not meet safe standards and staff knowledge and use of opioids such as Morphine was still very poor despite the World Health Organisation developing an effective algorithm in 1986. So again why single out Mother Teresa’s hospices in third world India years before these developments. Even the Liverpool care Pathway has recently been axed as it has been found to be unfit for purpose so if first world hospitals still can’t get care of the dying sorted out in 2020 why single out a hospice from decades ago. It’s beyond absurd!!
It takes a lot of skill to manage dying patients needs for example morphine causes urinary retention so you would have to do urinary catheterisation to monitor kidneys and fluid input and out put for patients on continuous strong analgesics/painkillers. Many of the nuns were not trained nurses and non of the nurses in the main hospitals in India and in the first world were adequately trained to give strong pain killers as the (WHO) The World Health Organisation didn’t develop an effective algorithm (analgesic ladder) until 1986. Hitchens conveniently ignores this fact. I know for a fact that if you took a patient back to a ward today in 2020 after a major surgical procedure with severe pain even trained nurses will give you a grilling as even nurses on wards in first world hospitals in 2020 lack the resources, time, and training to give opioids particularly IV morphine as they have to monitor patients closely after administration which poses even bigger challenges if you’re looking after numerous amounts of patients in a hospice with beds over a large area with patients who are at risk of stopping breathing from morphine usage when there are no trained nurses and proper equipment for monitoring. This is why in modern first world hospitals patients are given most of their IV (Intravenous) morphine in operating theatre recovery rooms as even modern first world hospital wards can’t cope with lots of patients needing strong opioids as there is not enough staff to administer morphine due to the endless list of jobs so closely monitoring potential harmful side effects of morphine would be a logistical nightmare in a hospice with numerous patients with complex healthcare needs. Morphine is very dangerous if not closely monitored. IM (Intramuscular) injections aren’t quick enough for relieving a severe pain experience which is why IV (intravenous) morphine is the Gold Standard post operatively. Some hospitals Iv worked in have even started using a IV fentanyl with anti inflammatories protocol which is unusual as fentanyl whilst stronger and faster acting than Morphine it does not stay in the system long enough in comparison to morphine which is why Morphine is the Gold standard. Our aim is to keep that pain gateway closed in the spinal cord and block the nociceptive signals to the brain. In order to even administer Morphine the fact is you would also legally be required to have reversals for morphine including experienced staff to be near by at all times to give reversals such as (opioid antagonists like Naloxone) as we are legally accountable for ensuring best practices and risk management to save patients who may have stopped breathing as it is common knowledge in a hospital setting that morphine effects the breathing centre in the brain (medulla ablongata). You would also legally require a crash trolley in case the patient arrested due to respiratory depression and if they needed intubating to save them you would require a doctor/trained anaesthetist as this is an highly skilled and dangerous procedure. Patients would also be suffering from severe nausea and vomiting which is common when having morphine which would have actually increased there pain because of abdominal retching. So without appropriate anti sickness drugs (anti emetics) including the skilled staff required to give anti sickness drugs the hospice would have been making the pain worse and increasing discomfort due to severe vomiting. So Hitchens claims regarding the use of painkillers were just ridiculous because the limited pain killing tablets that the hospice including most of the hospitals in India had access to during this time and place would have been ineffective for reducing severe pain most of the time anyway. So of course to the untrained eye from a first world perspective it would look like people were being neglected but in fact poor pain management was the norm all over India due to lack of training, knowledge and resources at the time and it was even a big problem managing pain in first world hospitals until the World Health Organisation (WHO) developed algorithms such as the analgesic ladder in the mid 80s which brought in new protocols to protect the lives of patients whilst achieving the most effective pain control and best practice for management of side effects such as the patient stopping breathing. The fact is that the first oral morphine tablets (the essential drug of palliative medicine) only arrived in India in 1988 under heavy regulations
To single out Mother Teresa's hospice is unfair and disingenuous when it was an issue not just for hospices, but hospitals in India and in first world hospitals too. I can supply references for this if needed..

That place is the same, There are no beds , all patients regardless of what disease they suffer from are given pain killers. I am from Kolkata and I agree. I have seen the system with which this Missionaries of Charity works, and its very disorganised and outdated. Honestly, a handful of Slums in the city or poor kids gets benefited from them. My sisters studied in the school by these Missionaries of Charity, it's named Holy Child Institute. And they too complain about the outdated education system they have, outdated course material they have. Maybe because the workers themselves are from this place that's why they lack training or something else, I'm not sure. Also, many things Christianity preaches are highly unscientific, I recall only a few years back the Vatican accepted that we live in a solar system and the universe is not geocentric. But what the Mother did during her time, when she was alive is really commendable. My parents said, that the sisters of charity came every month to homes to collect unused medicines so that they could use it to treat people, I'm talking back about the time when it was just started and was not this huge organisation. Considering how discipline falls and corruption creeps into everything here, in a third world country I suppose the quality of this organisation now is not surprising. BTW "Calcuta" is an outdated name of the city, its Kolkata, the city was renamed by the Supreme Court of India long time back. "Kolkata" is the appropriate pronunciation.

Career Agnes decided to become a Catholic nun, in order to do missionary work and spread the message of love and compassion in the world. In 1928, she became a Catholic nun and changed her name from Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu to Teresa. Later on, she joined the Irish order 'The Sisters of Loretto'. In order to carry out missionary work in India, she was sent to Calcutta on 6th January 1929, where she was appointed as a teacher at St. Mary's High School. Sister Teresa became Mother Teresa on 24th May 1937, when she made final Profession of Vows to become the ‘Spouse of Jesus for Eternity’. She continued to work as a teacher. In 1944, she was made the Principal of the school. Service Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary’s High School from 1931 to 1948. The condition of poor people outside the convent made such a deep impact on her that she decided to serve the destitute. In 1948, she was granted permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and take on the task of serving the poor slum dwellers in Calcutta. Although she had no funds, it was her determination that kept her going. With strong faith on the Divine Providence, she started an open-air school for slum children. Soon, she was joined by volunteer helpers. Financial assistance started pouring in. This made it possible for Mother Teresa to extend the scope of her social service. Mother Teresa’s work was not limited to teaching the poor children; she also educated the adults. As she traveled across the slum areas of Calcutta, she noticed that there was a lack of basic facilities, such as hospitals and clinics, for the poor. Hence, she learnt some basic medication techniques and started giving treatment to those who could not afford medication. Her efforts influenced her former pupils to form a group known as ‘Missionaries of Charity’. The group soon started a facility wherein poor people, who were dying on the streets, were brought and taken care of. The service inspired people to join the noble cause and donate funds for the organization working under Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa made use of the donations and thousands of missionaries who had joined her, for the establishment of several centers for poor and needy people across the world. In 1980, she started Homes for people with no one to look after them, people suffering from various incurable diseases, prostitutes, drug addicts and orphans. One of her most significant works was the establishment of center for AIDS patients in 1985, wherein thousands of patients were provided shelter. The Missionaries of Charity was officially recognized as an International Association, on March 29, 1969. By the beginning of 1990s, the number of co-workers had increased manifold and there were about a million of them, working in about 40 countries across the world. Global Recognition Mother Teresa’s service to humanity received worldwide recognition. She stood as the icon of peace, love and compassion. Her determination to serve the poor and needy fetched her about 124 prestigious awards, including 'Padmashree Award' (in 1962 from the President of India), 'John F. In some of their missions the sisters themselves live in homes without running water or electricity. They have no possessions and no money. Whatever money they are given is used for the poor and not themselves. Their fourth vow is Wholehearted and Free Service to the Poorest of the Poor; they are never allowed to take money or any kind of payment for their services. God have mercy on the poor soul who is spreading such lies. Oh how he will regret it later on!

It is very well known that nurses and other personel left there frustrated. People who have been idealistic helpers first, later became disillusioned about what really happens there in the hospitals and caring homes.

I have been to several of these missions in India. The care is far beyond their resources. Immaculate cleanliness, and profound dedication by the sisters. Don't lose site that these lives has been thrown away by those pursuing their comfort, like Mother Teresa's hate-filled detractors.

Im not religious in the traditional sense, but ive had help from a great catholic charity, when i went through a few weeks of being almost destitute and they were great, they gave me all i needed and didnt try to indoctrinate me in the process. Theresas Charity looks extremely dodgy. Im sure most of the nuns and volunteers have good intentions, but I dont approve of the way its run or the fact that Theresa had heart surgery when the money could have gone to someone younger.
