It's interesting that the "Hungarian Dances" are not attributed to a Hungarian composer. As a Hungarian, I say that despite this, it couldn't be more Hungarian. It's the work of Johannes Brahms. The musician showed a keen interest in Gypsy music from a very young age: from the age of nineteen, he accompanied the Hungarian violinist Reményi Ede throughout Germany. Reményi Ede introduced him to the music of his homeland and presented Joseph Joachim. Later, Joachim became his friend. This experience, over time, inspired Brahms to create a series of compositions and arrangements, 21 Hungarian Dances for piano four hands. These dances feature popular folk melodies of Hungarian verbunkos and csárdás dances, arranged with the sudden slow and fast tempo changes characteristic of Hungarian musical folklore, influenced by Gypsy music (very popular at that time). In total, twenty-one Hungarian Dances were created over several years. The first six were offered to a publisher in 1867, who rejected them. The first ten were published in 1869 in Brahms's own version for piano four hands. The last one was published in 1880.
