I haven't done it myself, but I've heard that some people have been successful using needle-nosed tweezers and pulling the pins out from where their head is. Just be careful you don't mangle the head of the pin trying to do it since the plastic is kind of soft.
This was by far the best explanation of these locking pins that I have seen. The back glass was already broken on the 360 gen 1 I was replacing the front screen and battery on so removing the back was not an issue, but when these locking pins fell out I searched for how to put them back in and couldn't find any help until this video. The watch is now back together and I can't thank you enough.
I want to thank you. I bought a Moto 360 for $40 but i know most likely it had a problem after some research i was linked to your video. and followed your instructions and ordered a battery. when it came in i took me 10 min to open replace and put back together the watch.
Fantastic, clear, and to the point video! MUCH better than the iFixit guides, which largely skip over this step and encourage you to pry the body out and destroy the pins.
Thank you very much for this guidance. I have visited 6 repair shops and nobody wanted to even touch it so I decided to do it myself. Opened it (I used bent razor from old traditional shaving machine), no pins got broken. Got the new battery and put it back together again. It works like it should now. GREAT VIDEO!
Thanks Seaian, It took me about 40 minutes to get the pins out without any damage, then the rest of the watch came apart easy, as you described. Great video.
This video is exactly what I needed - and what everyone else with a Moto 360 Gen 1 needs to replace the battery. I used a piece of plastic from a container from the grocery store that contained fresh goods. While I had to recut it every time I popped out one of the clips (because it mangled the tool some), this was MUCH better and EASIER than all the other instructions found (most of which included heating up the back of the watch). My watch now has a new life and done very affordably and very easy. Many thanks for sharing this to the world.
You are the best! I still have my old friend 360 1st gen, which I don't want to throw away and spend other 300 bucks on another smartwatch that will do just the same. Thanks for the detailed steps!
I've just finished changing the battery in my Moto 360. Thanks for this video, it was very well explained. Hopefully I'll get more than half a day's use from my watch now. I found that a fingernail was the best tool for removing the connectors.
Thanks Seaian Dunn! You're a lifesaver! My beloved moto 360 is running again. I was able to pull this off with just to tools you used and didn't have to purchase any other tools but the replacement battery. This was really helpful. Thank you so much for sharing. I highly recommend your video. Cheers!
Thnx a million for this! Was about to buy a new watch since all the other instructions scared me off :) Got it open now, and when replacement Batt is in, will be good2go again for another 2 of 3 years!
Worked like a charm, big thanks for the effort of making this video. At first it seemed barely possible to wedge my plastic tool in the gap to remove the pins but after a few minutes got the hang of it and came out no problem. Was also quite tricky to get the pins back in when assembling the thing back together, but after I figured out how to do one of them - the other were easy as well. Thanks again!
Good stuff bro! I saw the same method but instead you're supposed to use a curved needle to remove the fastener. Couldn't get it to work, but after I got the first one with your method, the rest came out super easily. Great job!
Great job! It went just like you described. I found a small sucker on the back of the watch, and a plastic pry tool made the job a lot easier. The sucker really helped to wiggle my plastic tool in when removing the plastic pins. Thanks for sharing.
Seriously, thank you for posting this. I have a Frankenstein Moto 360. 1. My original 360 motherboard. 2. My 2nd 360's screen and backplate/housing. 3. 3rd 360's qi charging coils. Lol Works great so far! Hopefully charging continues to work well. Kinda nervous about prying off the charging coils, but it seemed to work! And it is SO EASY getting into the Moto 360 now that I know about the pins! I can only imagine how the Moto employees were laughing at iFixit's "teardown." "They think you just pry off the back with force! " Lol
I completely agree with comments below, your method worked great. What a pain still, but it went smoothly with a bit of patience. Now even the accelerometer works better, it seems like it wasn't getting enough power to work well. So, all and all, very thankful.
Thanks for the fantastic video! I just followed along and replaced my battery in no time. I found it easy to pull the pins with a metal dental pick (that I'd bought at a drug store) and pry the back open with a guitar pick.
Quite an easy method as long as you do not use brute force especially while taking off connectors. Just be gentle. Worked out well and I replaced my battery with ease. Thank you very much :).
Thank you for taking the time to make this video! This just helped me replace my battery without any issues! Great instructions! I wasn't sure what I would use as a small plastic piece, but just cut up a plastic salad container and made one just like yours. (Milk carton would work too I bet.) Thanks again!
Awesome tutorial! Got the watch apart in minutes. I was nervous about the all the heating and cracking the back using the other methods I had seen. But this was so much easier. Thanks for this. Now to see if I can put it back together.
Many thanks for this easy to follow battery replacement video! I have just changed my watch battery for the second time, both with your help, and another new lease on life for my Moto 360! (Unfortunately minus one pin that pinged off from the tweezers!!) Some of the other videos that need a heat source are downright scary, so thanks again! Awesome video! :)
2 useful bits of info: 1) use a .008 inch (.203mm) feeler gauge to get the wedges out 2) reconnecting the battery - black wire on inside, red wire on outside (only way you can plug it in).
This was such a great tip, had all the pins out within 20 seconds. Problem was getting them back in, got 2, lost 1 and the last may be damaged too much to get back in.
Still waiting for a better smart watch so this is the second time this video has come in handy. Hopefully Google will come out with a watch this year however last time I replaced the battery I was hoping for the same thing. Now I hope smartwatches in future have easy ways to change the battery even if I have to take it to a watch maker. I'm quite thankful the Moto 360 replacement is as easy as it is.
Awesome video. Used a tiny flathead to get the spring in the band to retract, the smaller the better. I took my pins out with a flat razor. Don't pull the body from the battery off from the metal circle inside. Use tweesers to get the pins back in. To get the spring with the bands back in make sure half is in the socket/hole on one side and then slowly force the other on in using a guitar pick to keep the spring loaded.
Great instructions. I had a couple guitar picks from a phone screen fix kit. One was super thin and it worked. I also have a pair of precision tweezers where the points are small enough to pry on the end of the pins. There is a small space at the heads of the pins that you can get the tweezer point in and pry. One of the pins would not budge with the tweezer method but the plastic slide method did work. Thanks!!!
+Dick Wong Thanks! Yeah I initially tried using tweezers to pull the pins out but they weren't fine enough and I ending up mangling the tops of a couple of pins, lol. Glad the other method worked out for you!
Thanks for the tip. worked great. it seems that my watch only had 2 of the slide out curved pins that go in the square holes by the strap pinholes. you mentioned yours had 4? I've looked all over and don't seem to see them. not sure if i can even buy them. I just put one on each side, diagonal from each other.
Hey sorry for the late reply - yeah I had four pins. This was with the Gen 1 right? Diagonal pins should probably be fine. I don't think there's anywhere to buy extras, unless you got a friend with a really high precision 3D Printer.
Haha all good. It was trial and error for me. That's why one of my pins was broken. Provided your pins aren't bent to hell or one end got mashed they should slide into the slots with like the flat side of the tool you were using, or anything really that has a flat side and can fit in that spot.
yes all went well - i was convinced the watch was never going to work again tbh, but put it all back together and it's fine. I think Motorola just pull the back cover off and stick a new one on and probably have special tools but the cost is not viable using them. Many thanks again
Is that a store or somewhere I can go to get this done I just recently bought a Moto 360 modern time peice used off of Amazon and it works great but the battery died pretty fast and I don't trust myself not to break the watch trying to do this
From what I've read ubreakifix won't do it so maybe enlist a steady-handed friend or family member. But I will say it's fairly harmless to do provided you're not yanking on the cables or trying to pry the back off with force.
These instructions are great and helped me to successfully replace the battery. Unfortunately the watch won't recharge. When I put it on the charger (and I've tried two different chargers), it doesn't change faces to indicate that it is charging. Before the new battery died, it booted up just fine and told me to recharge the battery but I can't get that working. I've tried disassembling and reassembling to see if any connections are loose - to no avail. Any ideas what would prevent it from charging? Thanks!!
All I can say is go back in and make sure all the connectors properly connected. A lot of them "click" in to place. So even if it feels like it's in there, it may not be aligned quite right so it doesn't quite connect fully.
Removing the band remember the metal bar holding the strap is spring loaded, do not push on the plastic but push on that bar itself(metal bar has and edge you can catch with a exacto knife. As below using a thin feeler gauge works perfect
Thanks, Seaian! Your video allowed me to replace my battery, seeing someone else do it first always helps! My problem is I took all four pins out without breaking them and then managed to lose them when cleaning my desk. :( Does anyone have any ideas on either where to get pins or what might work as a replacement? Thanks!
Wow this seems alot better then breaking the back of the watch. What did u cut the little plastic arrow tool from and dose it need to be bendy will a business card work?
+Sunfirestorm I cut my little plastic thing from a laminated ID card, but a guitar pick might work, or even like a pop bottle or something. Needs to be pretty thin, you'll know quickly whether it'll fit or not.
Wish I'd seen this before I wrecked my watch following another tutorial, Using the plastic to get the pins out is much better than trying to prize them out, especially if you don't have great eyesight.

I got another Moto with a broken screen but good battery so I thought I'd just swap my screen on it. I took apart both the watches without breaking anything but when I put then back together, none of the screens work.... Not even if I switch the screens back to their original bodies. Now I got 2 useless Moto 360s
Make sure all the ribbon cables are firmly connected. Some of them are deceiving. The first time I put my watch back together it didn't respond to touch.
I gave up twice now after failing to get the plastic in. You make it look so easy. lol
I haven't done it myself, but I've heard that some people have been successful using needle-nosed tweezers and pulling the pins out from where their head is. Just be careful you don't mangle the head of the pin trying to do it since the plastic is kind of soft.

Thanks a million for this video. Even a 75 year old could follow it to put a new battery into a Birthday gift from his family some years ago.
WHOA. after having done this once with the "old" method, this seems much better! I bet it still is semi-waterproof! THANK YOU. Doing this tomorrow!
ifixit really needs to link your video to clarify the holes in their steps, thank you so much

I literally just installed the battery from a second moto 360 I had lying around (got water damaged), so far so good.
Bro, you the man. Thank you for this. Made my install SUPER easy. Rep!
Thanks !! Replaced battery using your guide ! I couldn't fit the plastic tool so I used a thin blade and it worked !
Perfect, was able to swap out the battery without any trouble. Thank you very much.
Glad it helped!
Dude, make more videos like this! You are very good at explaining stuff!
I completely agree with comments below, your method worked great. What a pain still, but it went smoothly with a bit of patience. Now even the accelerometer works better, it seems like it wasn't getting enough power to work well. So, all and all, very thankful.
Thanks, just replaced as per this brilliant video, just put it back on charger and watch woke back up..just amazing!!! Million thanks

Just completed this battery replacement. Thanks to this great video, it went smoothly. Just take your time. THANKS VERY MUCH Seaian!!!
Thank you very much!!! this method was very easy, open mine in about 15 min. now i need to buy the battery and hope it lasts.

Whats is battery backup for moto 360
Great video - thanks so much for putting this up!

Thanks a lot 😉
Thanks a lot man! This is the right technique - just tried it - works like a charm :)
I still took the back off with heat, but your video did give me some helpful tips on taking off the bands; thanks!
Worked for me! Thanks Seaian!
Wow! Thanks very much! It worked flawlessly
it is the best way actually, worked for me, thx bro :)
Thank you very much for the video. Now I changed my battery without breaking any parts
Thank you for this perfect solution. Just did mine and was super easy

Worked perfectly for me. I had this watch and didn't want to buy a new one while there are still no new chips available.
good job on explaining. I just did this and it took me around 30min.
easy to take apart putting the little plastic pins back in watch out I lost one it went god knows where, sproing........lol
I replaced the lost pin with a piece of a metal staple it worked great!
Thanks a lot!

Haha all good. It was trial and error for me. That's why one of my pins was broken. Provided your pins aren't bent to hell or one end got mashed they should slide into the slots with like the flat side of the tool you were using, or anything really that has a flat side and can fit in that spot.

Your ebay link to the battery for moto 360 gen 1 isn't working
Ah, it's been a while since I made the video. The battery you're looking for is a WX30 SNN5951A
So scale of 1 - 10 how hard is this? My watch battery bearly last a full day

Easy steps to follow. But after i replaced my battery the screen stays black, it vibrates when i touch it but there is no display. Any help?
All I can say is go back in and make sure all the connectors properly connected. A lot of them "click" in to place. So even if it feels like it's in there, it may not be aligned quite right so it doesn't quite connect fully.
@@nicely-dunn Did it twice, will give it one more go.

Seaian Dunn thanks got it to work with a box cutter and clear plastic packaging
Super, thx
Wish I'd seen this before I wrecked my watch following another tutorial, Using the plastic to get the pins out is much better than trying to prize them out, especially if you don't have great eyesight.
I could thanks to you, new sub
Ribbon cables are highly durable, and pulling up is perfectly save, in fact never pull it in a different way.
I only wish that I found your video before I destroyed the cover needlesly heating it up. Where do I get a new battery cover? BTW, I used a super fine dental pick tool to slide the pins out slightly, once it is a little exposed you can pull it out easily.
+gabi Probably your best bet is eBay or a third party parts site. The watch is old enough now that any stock is probably just surplus from when the manufacturer was still making the watch.
If the battery replacement cures the random shut down problem, I will most likely just buy a case for it, costs as much as a battery cover (there is only one seller on eBay). I like this watch, just not enough to buy a new one of them, the 2nd gen is not that much of an improvement.
Same, I cracked the back of mine and need to replace it also:/ Wish I'd seen this first!!
So I followed through with everything and my watch is turning on just fine again, but it won't register on the dock to charge... Anyone know how to fix this?
Hey there, all I can really say is that make sure all of your cables are properly plugged in. Some of them feel like they're plugged in but they aren't until they "snap" in. There's one ribbon cable that I find is pretty bad for this.

I replay need help I can’t figure out how to remove the clips or pins holding the watch at the back I have van removed the back glass cover to see f it will help but didn’t anyone please help me
This method of opening seems to be able to retain the water-resistant capability of the watch.
I got another Moto with a broken screen but good battery so I thought I'd just swap my screen on it.
I took apart both the watches without breaking anything but when I put then back together, none of the screens work.... Not even if I switch the screens back to their original bodies.
