- In 1987, SR-71 Blackbird Was Saved By Saab 37 Viggens of Sweden.
On June 29, 1987, "Operation Olga," an SR-71 Blackbird flight close to the Soviet Baltic states to observe military activities there, was disrupted when the jet's right engine blew up. The SR-71 dropped to 25,000 feet, and the pilot quickly turned toward Germany; however, during this flight, he entered Sweden's airspace over Gotland. Sweden's and the Soviet Union's radars were watching the Blackbird, and the Russians scrambled a MiG-25 Foxbat to down it. However, four Saab 37 Viggens in the air were ordered to intercept the SR-71, and over Oland, they caught it. So, what happened next?
That's actually pretty badass of Sweden. Bravo!
I always thought the swedes were a bunch of pussies I guess I was wrong. I gave him my props on that one.
And now they are a member of NATO.😎
Great to have friends in high places!
& low compared to Blackbirds usual altitude
Interesting facts: SR-71 Blackbird was designed by U.S. born Clarence Leonard "Kelly" Johnson (at Lockheed Martin), the son of Swedish parents who emigrated from Sweden to Michigan a long time ago. Also the blackbird is the Swedish national bird since 1962.
Wow very interesting I knew about Kelly J. but not the rest.@@Draco_Nex
The Bird is the sexiest plane ever built.
That’s what freedom with friends do
I actually saw the plane fly over Germany as a kid!
That's awesome. Was probably watching soviet troop movement. I live 10 miles from Beale afb in Marysville ,CA I saw. It many times as a kid. When it took off it would be at night or early morning and it shook the windows on the entire house. Incredible power
... got into trouble reporting the sighting of 2 'returning' ones back in my Air Force days (RNLAF)
Thank you Sweden!
Sweden are bros. Thank you Sweden.
Sweden bros should read the new USA/NATO DCA that will be signed by Sweden in June. Sounds more like surrender terms Japan did at end of WWII
I thought Sweden is a neutral country
@@Rami-z5f Was for a long time, didn't participate in WWI and WWII, but can't miss out on WWIII, right?
@Nauda999
No. More like Putin’s stupidity is closing in on Russia more and more.
Article 5…. bring it! Poland is already jumping at the chains.
Soviets didn't want to shot down, but to capture it....
And disassemble it to make one of their own
@@karenlynch8348 normally, more Soviet planes are took for history....
Could never "capture" it! Ridiculous concept!
Wonderful that someone helped rather than hinder. Why oh why can’t it be this way.
sweden knows her buddies
The swedes were really heroic and badass indeed...
All in a day's work 😊
Things we never knew.
And Trump wants to abolish NATO Really Trump
the 71 knew sweden was watching
Why back in the day we had cooler fighters
The Blackbird wasn’t a fighter. In fact, it carried no weapons at all. It was strictly for reconnaissance.
Pilot to base: "Tell my mechanic when I get back he got some 'splainin' to do!" 😂
If you have ever experienced an engine failure in a normal passenger flight like American or Delta like I did, I can only imagine the terror those two pilots felt when one of the only two engines let go. Just wow that bird must have shook like crazy for a bit. Then your just hoping it doesn't rip the wing off as well if air isn't able to pass through it. From my experience it was scary af but we still had other motors. Man talk about balls of steal.
You needed balls of steel to fly a Blackbird to begin with. They weren’t a walk in the park to operate to begin with. And you know you’re going to be flying into hostile territory and if you’re fired at, your only defense is “Punch burners”.
@@zlinedavid ... they also 'tested' other gadgets.
@@DrOtto-sx7cp Oh I have no doubts. Really, the whole thing was like an ongoing experiment.
Actually the two pilots I talked to who flew it said it pretty much flew it self. Meaning it was really smooth at altitude. I still couldn't imagine getting to fly one of those.
@zlinedavid
Not really. The thrill of the SR-71 was its exclusivity.. not the skills or sensations it created.
It is a plane that has the same weight and power as a modern 737. The only real difference is that it has the aerodynamics and structure to withstand flight at Mach 3 and engines that can maintain thrust at those speeds and high altitudes. Mach 3 at 80,000 feet is nearly as boring as Mach 0.78 at 30,000 feet and definitely more boring than Mach 0.05 on a single track dirt trail.
And this wasn’t over enemy territory. If the SR-71 flew over the Soviet Union not only would it have created an international incident-but it would have been promptly shot down. The only enemy nations it flew over were tiny developing ones.
Way to go, Sweeden
Good guys know Good guys.....😊
Sweden and. Poland. Big. Friends
Well that was kind of them
This is exactly why we need to be in
NATO!❤
Son we are NATO but a certain person wants to do away with it let that sink in

@CorporateU-Tcensored Honestly, do you know how NATO works?????
@jameslove5457 I know we are NATO, I served in Italy under NATO. but America can not stand alone because we need help. Honestly, the people, like Tantrump, who don't understand how NATO works are the problem, and you can't fix stupid!
Thanks, Sweden!
sweden's air space so it's their call
I'm glad those pilots were awarded the U.S. Air Medal. It's like the one I have from my dad, awarded for WWII and Korea action.
Mig 25 Foxturd
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂fuckstard mig31
Yeah this turd prevented your black turd to make anymore flights over ussr
hell yeah air metals
fly high blackbird
Can you imagine the thoughts going through those Swedish pilots minds?
“Can you repeat that? We’re to escort WHAT?!?!” 😂
It's incredible how clunky the MIG 25 looks when you consider that the Soviets built the jet to take down the SR71.
It was 87, the cold war was still going on. And by this time the Blackbird had been witnessed several times. Sweden probably had some basic info on it. Plus, with the Soviets tracking it they probably figured that it was friendly, or at least not a threat.
❤ friends are hard to find in good to keep
Those damn fox bats were made just 4 intercepting the black bird and those planes where no joke if you m not mistaken the f15s were made n response 2 the fox bats either way not many aircraft got away from the FBs and nothing could out run em except the black bird and even that was a idk if it could kind of moment
Half right. Yes your right, the F 15 was built, because the U.S. thought the Foxbat was an Air Superiority fighter in addition to being a high altidude interceptor. The truth is that in a close in dog fight, an F 4 Phantom would prevail against a Foxbat. The Foxbat was NOT built to intercept the SR 71. The SR 71 was too fast and flew to high for the MIG 25 or the MIG 31. The SR 71 could fly considerably higher and faster than its " official record setting" speeds and altidudes. The Foxbat was built to counter the mach 3 B-70 bomber which never was. The prototype XB 70 was destroyed "accidently" by an F 104 that got too close in formation. The striken SR 71 in this case got all the way down to only a couple hundred knots, as it limped to Denmark, and then Germany; a commercial jet airliner could have beaten it from Denmark to Germany.

Thank you Sweden and Denmark! Allies are a great thing!

Before Sweden was part of nato.

Sweden is a true Ally! I hope our Arrogant and short sighted government did the right thing by Sweden for their help and alliance?
Did you get that set of negative perceptions from Dirty Convict Donny? Or did you construct it from FOXAGANDA propaganda? Did you miss the Air Medals part too?
Now, in mid-June 2024, the solidary of NATO is proving it's worth!
...later that night sr71 did a 5-some with saab ja37s, isn't? .... 😜
geta love the Swedes
Remember SR 71 is not a military jet fighter with no weapon system so it is a favorite in the world stage even though it is a spy plane. Designated as a spy platform. Ohh yes with wing's 😅
If it was just a flameout, they could of pulled back on the stick kick in that one operating engine's afterburner and still could have outrun anything with or without wings until they got to friendlier airspace 😜😎
Not really the SR is a handful on one engine. MANY aircraft can outrun it when operating on one engine. Why do you think it entered Sweden's airspace after the engine failure. Even though they where not yet in NATO they where friendly airspace.
On something like an F15 maybe. You’re not running a Blackbird on one engine at full burner and the other one not operating. 1, where the engines are placed almost at the outer edge of the airframe, it’s going to be incredibly unbalanced. And this is on a jet not known for its maneuverability. It was designed to go balls-out fast in a straight line, not dogfight. 2, people don’t realize that the geometry of the SR71’s engine actually changes as speed increases. The spike on the front of the engine actually retracts at around Mach 2, because the air is moving so fast it doesn’t need to go through the compression stage. So now you’re running one engine that’s allowing partial air bypass and one that isn’t, which is going to throw the balance off even more. Plus you have to think, they were still running that Bird at 20-25K feet on less than 50% power. That’s the operating range for a lot of aircraft.
Medals
Air metals?
Stupid AI. Medals, not metals. But medals are made of metals
3rd story I heard of this smh
Oh, the Russkis decided to shoot down an SR-71 over Swedish airspace. What bullbleep.
Engine didn't blow up
I believe the circumstance I do not believe the story
So called neutral Sweden
Why would they shot it down if it didn't enter Russian air space. However im sure if Russian jet enter USA air space would be shot down
Olga f.k up they always do
This why we have NATO AND EX President Donald Trump wants America to exit Nato really Trump really
Trump’s a dumb fill in the blank
You are correct. I love it when Americans pay to defend Europe. It leaves more money for European leaders to spend on making themselves rich...😊
Maybe you should stop watching MSNBC and actually listen to whats being stated. NATO allies are required by treaty to spend a certain % of their GDP on defense, which a good chunk of them aren't. Why are we their defenders when they refuse to pay for their own defense?
It is easier to be blinded by outrage when all you listen to is MSM.
@@johnathanpearson3203 you have to be Russian
Your are wrong. Trump treaten to leave NATO if the members didn't start spending 2% BNP agreed in 2014.
As a Dane I don't even think it is fair that US is spending so much while the rest of NATO is saving money and waiting to American to come when shit hits the fan.
Every member need to honor the agreement!
And guys what it worked most members are now or working on spending 2% BNP.
What the blackbird was in soviet airspace that Sounds Like USA Soest nothing wrong
The Swedes have an airforce? 😂
Actually, for a smaller nation, the Swedes have always had a pretty damn good air presence. Saab is a more than capable manufacturer.
