Did the course in 2000 as a 37 year old GySgt. Loved it, trained 2,000 Marines in the next 3 years. Highly recommend any Marine who has the desire to pre screen and go for it.
The problem is that we only get in the water for swim qual once per year. Other than for a specific reason such as the Helo Dunker, most units never get wet. Sexual harassment and stop smoking classes seem to be more important.
It was called the Marine Combat Instructor of Water Survival when I went through the course in 1991. I retired in 2007, so the name change must have happened fairly recently.

In the late 1980's I was a WSSI (Water Safety Survival Instructor) which is pre-MCIWS.

i went through the course in 2007 and it was still combat but they told us we were some of the last to go through that version
