    Patlabor 2 second half plot is essentially Dark Knight Rises but police mecha.

      Bad take if you know anything about Oshii's actual politics vs the actual politics of the guy who wrote the Dark Knight films, they are pretty much polar opposites.

    Considering the in-depth discussion about the politics and history of Patlabor, the Movie 2, wow, you guys really missed the themes behind Patlabor the Movie 1. It was made during the bubble economy when Japan was so intent on modernizing that they were basically tossing their past out with the trash in order to make these big, new shiny buildings. It kept on contrasting the future (giant robots) with the past and traditional ways of doing things, like airing out futons on the Patlabor hanger's roof or pilots growing tomatoes. The entire investigation takes the two detectives to all of these traditional parts of town, now run down and forgotten or destroyed by "renovation." I'm sure it's a big surprise that Oshii made a movie that was basically political, but the politics was playing out in the background (or, in many cases, the background paintings) so that it wasn't as obvious a political statement as Patlabor the Movie 2.

      @@WeHeartGiantRobots I'm not sure what you mean by the question, but it's basically my interpretation of the themes of the movie. I've lived in Japan during the bubble economy and again after the bubble popped, and the imagery (especially that conversation that took place in the half-demolished public bath--not the conversation itself but the imagery surrounding it) really struck me as a criticism of Japan's tendencies at the time. It's been a while since I saw it, but wasn't E. Hoba choosing to live in more traditional sections of town, almost laying a trail of bread crumbs to draw attention to them? Anyway, the story is deeper than the way you guys portrayed it.
      That being said, you did a great job of analyzing the second movie.

    • @lougroove1703
      @lougroove1703 2 роки тому +6

      Thank you for saying this! It's such an obvious theming throughout the entire film, and as I recall it's almost outright stated in certain parts. It's very clear what E. Hoba's motives were and the way in which he went about this. Hearing it being said that the plot and story is completely meaningless is quite odd. You're the first comment I can find that takes issue with this analysis of the first film (or lack there-of).

    • @catoblepag

      Aaand six months later I'm here to write you "well said". As a huge Patlabor fan I'm obviously happy that the guys in this channel like this series, but I feel they did their homework in a very hasty way. The first movie is a masterpiece, and I'm afraid it gets overlooked only because the second one presented its political themes in a more obvious way, having some characters monologuing for what feels like hours (and basically explaining themes that could've been conveyed with action and plot). It often sounds very clever, but it's dry, depressing, didascalic, and ultimately a joyless watch to me. It lacks that spark of pure anime fun, that fantasy element that was still present in Patlabor 1. P.S. Speaking about a hasty homework... no mention of the second OAV series, and the overarching plot of the manga and TV series (concluded in the second OAV series) with Utsumi and the Griffon? He's basically the main villain of the whole story, and a fantastic villain to boot.

    • @userxl41drn301
      @userxl41drn301 11 місяців тому +1

      @@catoblepag British people will always seem to put their famous "wit" and humor above everything else, even a simple dissection of obvious themes in a movie. Some of them just can't help but try to make 10 jokes a second to live up to their Monty Pythonesque reputation, instead of being serious for a minute.
      The first Patlabor movie was damn good and had all of the hallmarks of a great Oshii production. The visual storytelling did a great job of telling the plot and this is a scientifically proven fact, but these guys just seem to focus on the logic of the script. This may be a reason why many modern Western movies need to spell everything out and include a ton of logical exposition and backstory instead of relying on at least some form of self-expression on the part of the director.

    Just a note about the "flak vests" on Patlabor 2's Ingram mechs, they're actually more like ERA in the form of flak vests, partially why there's the large explosions whenever they get hit by the vulkan rounds from the Ixtls. I don't remember if it's shown in the film but it's brought up in one of the drawings in the DVD box set's extra books if I'm remembering correctly.

    In the „landscape” sequence in the middle of Patlabor 2 the imagery is strongly inspired by photos from 1981-1983 Martial Law in Poland. Oshii has a lot of connections with my country, he even directed live-action movie here, with local actors. It is called Avalon.

    Great video as always. Patlabor 2 is one of my favourite movies ever. Being Irish the movie really resonates with me, we are in a very similar position to Japan where we are a nation that pertains to neutrality and peace but actively participates in the United States global hegemony both directly and indirectly

    • @OrtadragoonX

      It’s probably my favorite animated film of all time.
      I’ll admit that a lot of it was lost on me when I first watched it way back when I was like 13 (33 now) and even after a second viewing I was struggling with its concepts. Mainly because I’m an American and our circumstances involving military intervention and the civilian relationship with the military are completely different from Japan’s.
      But after the Iraq and Afghanistan wars among other things as well as the erosion of our soft power… I watched it again when I was 26. And it finally clicked for me. I got what Oshii was trying to say and I was able to even apply it’s lessons to the modern United States and our gradual fall as a modern empire. And our hypocrisy on the international stage.
      Basically it was the film I needed to grow up with to understand it’s concepts.

    • @rogerc6533
      @rogerc6533 8 місяців тому +1

      As an Australian, we can relate to this too. Our sovereignty is directly surrendered to America in the name of a false peace and their wars of "peace" have really led the breakdown of global order and societal cohesion. Oshii must have already seen the surrendering of Japan's economic future to the US (and much of the rest of the developed world has followed suit since) but what has happened in the past decade has escalated into an utter surrendering of all cultural and ethnic identity to our American overlords that will essentially amount to genocide of our entire identities and nation states if allowed to further continue.

      Fun fact. Declassified documents have shown the USA was actually pushing for Japan to take the "Southern Road" and even tacitly consenting to them fucking with not just the KMT's China, but British, French, and Dutch colonies. Because FDR's administration was shot through with Soviet agents. How much influence this actually had on Japan's choice is hard to say, given the coup's failure may have been inevitable.

    Btw, I think Patlabor Live action gets an unnecessary bad wrap. The directors cut version of the movie - Tokyo War is actually a direct followup to Patlabor 2, its not quite as good as the original, but still a really solid Patlabor film my only issue with it is that the version that's out has subtitles that are from a non native speaker, they are passable, but I'd like a proper translation as I feel that some stuff was probably lost in it.
    What I saw of the Live Action TV show is pretty good too, its pretty much Patlabor moved to the lost decades, though again only a couple episodes have gotten proper translations. I did some digging into why it was percieved as being so bad, and I found some really dumb criticism over hiring an idol as one of the key actresses in the series. Somehow over time this became a meme of all of Patlabor live action is bad, when actually I think its just a really dumb overly critical (in a dumb way) side of otaku culture (some of the stuff the idol fans do is absolutely insane) seeping into general perceptions of this series. I also feel that the film version may have gotten a bad wrap due to like 30 mins being cut out of it on release, the directors cut was pretty solid.

    It would have been best for both Japan and the US, and the world. If Japan had become the 51st state.
    Both nations have had a close relation, despite the grumblings of some artist, for 70+yrs now. As of 1990 it was over 40yrs.
    In that time many US soldiers had married and had children. Many of these families staying Japan for decades.

    Another thing. This pacifist attitude, is part of why China feels comfortable being so aggressive today. By relying on the US they have left themselves and the region vulnerable. This pacifist attitude isn't just held by Japa. It was held by Taiwan, until about a year ago.
    Only S Korea seems to take the threat seriously, and they have their own threat to worry about.
    Australia is also half bowing to the ccp and not showing a spine, which surprised a lot us in the US.
    IF japan. S. Korea, Taiwan, the archipelago nations, and Australia don't join forces. China will like roll right over them. Especially if they take Taiwan.

    Just got done watching Patlabor 2 for the first time. Man, I won't lie, I was kind of bored, had to look up a plot summary throughout. I think Ghost in the Shell is better, but mostly because it's a shorter run time and it better paces the heady artsy filmmaking. The only other Oshii film I've seen is Ghost in the Shell 2. Going from Patlabor 1 to 2 was very jarrring. Because, I honestly thought the visuals on 1 looked better. They were more crisp, and there were way more scenes of super fluid animation. Patlabor 2 was just chocked full of that ugly VHS filter look and ultra pale bloom lighting, which I think worked better in Ghost in the Shell, but just felt like a downgrade coming off Patlabor 1.

    • @WeHeartGiantRobots
      @WeHeartGiantRobots  2 роки тому

      Patlabor 2 is definitely a slower, more thoughtful experience, and I can definitely understand why you might find it a bit jarring compared to everything it's following on from.
