    very good roach
hawks are often overlooked in the bushcraft world, ideal for just as you said, loads lighter than any axe and perfectly capable for solo overnighters - i have a few cold steel items now & ill be honest, they are mega tuff for the price.
been using them for 3 years nearly and not one issue.
looking forward to seeing the blizzard bag - i love mine, saved my arse in -3c a few weeks back as i had no sleeping bag with me in the woods.
    loving the new vids mate

I’ve owned and used one of these for almost ten years. Aside from replacing the handle for a longer one, this is one of the best camping axes you’ll find on the market.

That was a nice Burl on that downed tree behind you... I have a CS Trail Hawk, I cut the handle down to 16" stained it and took the paint off the head and acid washed it in vinegar, they are great little tools... God Bless

I love my my pipe hawk. I got it for more decorative purposes I customized it to a native style hawk. Plus i did some wood burning and design carving on it. But the trail hawk,... the trail hawk is next on my list for actual filed purposes. I did sharpen my "Pipe" and tried it out and was surprised how good it was for the price. Good video!

Now I really need to get out and use mine.Just finished drying the stain and linseed oil.I also cut mine down to 18inches,drilled a lanyard hole and removed the screw and put a 90degr spine for a ferro rod if needed. Thanks Roach!!!

I agree. For people who are on foot, they're awesome tools. Big axes are better for larger construction tasks and getting in larger firewood for stoves and fireplaces but, if you're on foot in the wilds a hawk is hard to beat on return for calories expended carrying it. As always enjoyed your video. :)

I have the Pipe Hawk myself - it has a slightly bigger blade and a slightly bigger hammer poll than the Rifle Hawk. I find a C-Cell Maglite belt loop (the one with the plastic ring and leather loop) is a perfect way of carrying it on my belt round camp.

  • @candaceglover3888

If you take out the set screw and down the handle to refit the head, it adds to the versatility. Also, you can take off the head and make a makeshift handle.

looks pretty handy, i tried a few axes in my kit, but found them cumbersome for the amount of use i was getting from them, so went back to the trusty old MoD survival knife, ... never thought about trying a tomahawk,
... cheers for the video, looking forward to the next one,

The good thing about these types of hatchets. If the handle brakes...its easy enough to make a new one when out in the woods.

    • @WastelandSeven
      @WastelandSeven 9 років тому +2

RDPproject Especially compared to trying to replicate a wedged design when you're
cold wet and tired. You could come up with a workable handle for a hawk in a
few minutes as opposed to having to burn the wood out of an axe head or
hammer it out, then craft the handle.

Nice to see you back out in the woods Mike, looking forward to your next video with the bed. Will you be using the Hawk for that one also? as i would be interested to see how it would fair on other tasks. I carry a small axe for my day sack/overnighter, but i may be tempted with a hawk, if it performs with other jobs.

You nailed it :) excellent little helper and so much fun. I cut my handle about 4" / 10cm - good balance. it's true that you get the performance out of the swing and speed with Tomahawks, but this one is so small anyways, it doesn't matter much. use it for smaller tasks and it really shines.

I have nearly all the hawks and cs axes. This is next the rifle mans is abit hardcore. You could use the trail boss instead. But this ans the pipe hawk are the ultimate survival for that one reason lightness. All bug out bags etc need to be light

kudos on properly holding the hawk. Most people grip it like a baseball bat or hammer in a fist, which reduces control and accuracy, The correct way is to put your thumb along the spine, more like you hold a golf club. That makes a huge difference and a lot of people don't know that.

Good review, have seen a few others and they all seem to suggest the Trail Hawk is a good piece of kit, good thing about it is that if the handle breaks it pretty easy to make another from a branch. Nice to see you out and about Roach ATB

I have the Rifleman Hawk by Cold Steel. It is larger and heavier by about 1/3 over the trail hawk. I am more of a axe fan I got the Hawk for a version of a hatchet with a longer handle. To someone who is considering the purchase, I would suggest paying the slight extra expense and get the blade cover / sheath from Cold Steel unless you are handy with leather working to make your own cover.

Hi Roach, thanks for sharing this review. Can an ex scaley back ask a question please? Im looking at buying this , cutting down the length of the handle to make a shorter hatchet. I notice with most of the cutting you do, your grip is further up the shaft. It would seem the handle is perhaps a little long in the first place for its intended use...?question, 1, what would your thoughts be, 2 Any problems with the head coming lose etc?kind regards, John...

Great review Roach. I now live in Canberra down under and sadly the law here prohibits tomahawks as they are deemed to be designed to be thrown, but it's fine to carry my GB small forest axe which could be thrown(I never would) just as easily - go figure!!
