super late but now watching this after the finale and seeing a bit of manga spoilers about yoriichi tsugikuni's past i think i get it now, btw spoilers ahead past hashira training arc!!
everyone complains or say's that this dude is inconsistent and say his snot a sayian right, which there's sorta half right, but looking back at yoriichi's past, someone prayed basically day and night for the gods to remove the needless violence if i remember correctly, more likely than not, all i do know for a fact, yoriichi is genuinely heaven sent, a demi god of sort's, has too be.
and this lil fuckin kid who's like barely 14 named tanjiro, who HAS his blood! who was the original one who INVENTED the different style of breathing, that is IN TUNE, with special metal ore that's bathed in sunlight all year round, it's quite literally no wonder how or even why tanjiro managed too survive even if it was by the skin of his teeth, his in the long line of literal beings who can be compared too demi god's! I wouldn't say it's watered down Sun Breathing... Mainly because that's exactly what all other breathing styles are.
There's two reasons I'd say why Tanjiro is weaker than Yoriichi, even if he's able to use Sun Breathing. The first reason is that Tanjiro has only been training for a few years, and the second reason is that he is still a just a teen, while Yoriichi is an adult.
Yet despite those two factors, by the end of the Hashira training arc he's basically on par with the Hashira in terms of strength.
Even by the end of the story he still had a crazy amount of room to grow and become stronger. So I'd wager that if Tanjiro had been a Demon Slayer for a decade or longer, he would be on the same level of strength as Yoriichi.
