  • The unveiling of the three Royal Portraits of the Norwegian Kings forever associated with WWII. Samlerhuset has donated these portrait paintings to the Norwegian Resistance Museum, and the film was aired at the unveiling at Akerhus Festning, the Fortress of Oslo, with prominent guests such as His Royal Majesty King Harald V, the Minister of Defense and the Mayor of Oslo present.
In the movie you will meet the painter Ross Kolby, and also two veterans of WWII; Wilhelm Mohr, squadron leader at Royal Air Force and adjutant for King Haakon VII, and Erling Lorentzen, the youngest member of the Norwegian Resistance and brother-in-law of the current Norwegian King Harald V. Both are two of the few remaining people that knew all the three Norwegian kings in person. The voiceover is done by one of Norway’s most known radio- and TV documentary voices, Nils Nordberg.
The film is available to be seen continuously next to the actual portrait paintings, situated in the entry hall of the Norwegian Resistance Museum at the Fortress of Oslo.

Very interesting video about the three kings. Learning about them and Norway's behavior and fate during World War II is a surprising and inspiring pleasure. The story of the artist and the paintings equally so. Thank you very much for posting this video.

Who - in 1905 -. could have imagined, that the Danish prince Carl would be a truly great king of Norway and a symbol of its fight for freedom.

What an amazing portraitist Mr Kolby is! He really captured the psychology, the soul, the spiritual essence of each of the kings. He is right, the eyes are the expression of the person. It is so moving to think how much the people loved, respected and honoured their leadership even while on exile. Kingly and manly, character traits that helped inspire Norway to fight for freedom. Well done. A great documentary. Thank you. Where are the portraits exhibited now?

As a Norwegian, I will tell you that I partially agree with you. Firstly I will tell you that Queen Maud, was English, and she had numeral affairs with other men. His son, Olav, don't look like his 'father' at all, and rumors had it that he was a bastard. The King was like any other King in Europe, a good man with little power. So were his descendants.
What you see is how the Royal family, & their associates, represented in this video, were given money, opportunities & status after the war. Nothing is said about the real war, that my parents lived through. My father as a sailor in the Merchant fleet, and my mother as a poor young woman, fostered by a single mom with 5 siblings.
To me, this video is a story illustrating how our society was back then. It has NOTHING to do with history and events happening during the war efforts. It is the victor's story, designed to install nationalistic emotions into the upcoming generations.
