  • The default method of drawing in the layout program has changed in KiCad 5.0, it is the "modern toolset" based on OpenGL.

    Thank you, i am a french student on electronic and electronics systems is my passion so i use KicAd to create some small circuits with basic fonctions. This tutorial is very useful for me, KicAd become better and better at every new version and for a free software this is impressive. Thank you again, please continue to make video.
    ( sorry for my english, i try to write without any traductor)

    I went from using 4.0 to using 5.1 and OMG.. If I didn't have your help I would have been completely lost.. I'm no expert by any means and you have been a great help. I look forward to more info on 5.1.

    So, I tried this a few weeks ago and I spent a few hours on optimizing things, on a very simple layout, a break out board with just one 24 pins IC with some connectors. Just to investigate/learn about the Kicad workflow. And then I found out about freeroute, and then it all went automatically real fast! Although it needed two layers while my manual solution only needed one layer but with some shoving and creeping through inbetween the IC pins. So, I said to myself, I am never going to do this again... (this manual push and shove) Still a few days later I read a comment from someone who claimed that "freeroute" is "terrible"... Not for me it isn't! Still I will have to see how it goes with a more complicated design.
    Thanks for the video.

      auto-routers will not replace manual routing, sure, for newbie projects and breakout boards it's more than enough, but if you did this for a living you would know

      @@the_perigoso Ok, thanks Rafael. Still I used to work at IC design, and there nobody bothers with push and shove with channel routers, so if you have two layers or more I fail to see why PCB routing would be any different... Guess I will find out with a more complex design or maybe not. In any case, a happy New year to you!

      @@the_perigoso Ok, two days later I found this video, not Kicad based still a good demonstration about auto routing problems So now I know that : ua-cam.com/video/sffuvnGhano/v-deo.html

    Now that this tool is in, could we maybe get Push and Shove for components? Because it's kind of stupid that they simply lift off the traces when you try to nudge them at all, they could reuse the same path optimiser to adjust the traces. Good placement is tough!

    I'm on 5.1.2 and on Modern Toolset the router only finds routes automatically but it doesn't push other traces. Is there an option to turn it on / off?

    I have used the push and shove and I do find it useful but I have real problem with how it looks in '5. I notice you have In1.Cu and In2.Cu as well as B and U. Are they addable individually or did you start with a 4 layer board?

    • @contextualelectronics
      @contextualelectronics  5 років тому +1

      This board started as a 4 layer, but there's no reason you can't swap from 2 to 4 layer designs in the middle of a design.

    Push and shove doesn't work on version 6 for me. Tried all settings. Also diff pairs don't drag together.

    In the video, you had to edit thickness of each line separately. Is there a method of selecting multiple lines, then editing their properties in group?

    Does anyone know how/if you can set it to 'hug' other traces, but not actually move them?

    when are they going to make adding parts and associating them faster, that things takes ages to load and I have 32gb ram on a 6 core cpu. Its really annoying, maybe allow to add parts and minimize that window so that when i need to add again i dont have to reload everthing.

    5.1? You do mean 5.0.1, right? I tried switching when this came out and the remapping of symbols really are not where it should be. Caused me lots of grief. Is 5.0.2 better?

    • @contextualelectronics
      @contextualelectronics  5 років тому

      5.0.2 is the latest version with bugfixes, that is what I recommend people start with these days. However, 5.1 is the next large release coming out, it's what is being tested right now in the 'nightly' downloads. I don't recommend anyone switch to that yet, but I mention it because there will be some changes and I considered making videos with that version of the software (decided against it)

      @@contextualelectronics cool. I got uncertain since I didn't find official info on 5.1. Thinking seriously about KiCon btw. Hope I can make it. Great idea!

    Hi, it would be so great if you install a plugin who show each of your keyboard/mouse press during your video recording because Kicad has a lot of very useful keyboard shortcut that you use during your video (even if I recognize that you make effort to tell most of key you press ;-))

    • @contextualelectronics

      I used to have one, but I have had trouble finding a suitable plugin for Windows 10 (which I need to use for recording with my capture card). If you know of one, I would love to hear about it!
