For years, I lugged around a huge pedalboard that weighed as much as a combo amp. After making multiple trips to my car for all my gear, I started getting weary of the big board. Through doing the Truetone Lounge interviews, I got to see quite a few large boards, but I was most intrigued by the players that got the most from small pedalboards. The two minimalistic cats that stuck out were Guthrie Trapp and John Leventhal. Both had small boards and both created a variety of wonderful tones with simple rigs. It was then that I decided to make my own, minimalistic grab & go board.

Here's an idea for you. I have most of the Tone Core series, courtesy of Jeorge Tripps, including the Echo Park. When used with the stereo docks, these pedals support "reprocessing". That is, you can take the output of one channel, run its output to the other channel, and use that 2nd channel's output to go to your amp. Exchanging notes with the programmer/developer, I learned that the Echo Park's programming "distributes" versions of the delayed signal to both outputs (in anticipation of 1-in/2-out situations, I gather). What this means is that, if you plug into A, some of what it does shows up at B's output, and vice versa. If you plug into A, set it for reverse, and feed A's output to B's input, you re-reverse the signal. But some of the originally reversed delay also shows up at B's output, and some of the re-reversed delay also shows up in A's output. The result, from B's output, is a curious mixture of forward and backward repeats at different levels, and different numbers of A->D/D->A conversions. Not exactly "roots" or "country", but interesting nonetheless.

@@AskZac You're most welcome. I have the Liqui-Flange as well, which is a stereo flanger, and shares the same re-processing capabilities (something many stereo pedals are also capable of). I joke to people to plug into a fuzz of their choice, then into one channel of the flanger. Take its output to one channel of the Echo Park, run *that* output to the other channel of the flanger, and then run *that* to the other channel of the Echo Park. Then phone in to work to tell them you're taking a sick day, hit a chord, sit back and let the magic happen! LOL Of course, with everyone already at home, maybe this sort of shenanigans can help pass the time...once you've watched all the Ask Zac and Truetone Lounge videos, of course.

..into a Line 6 DL4 .....so lots of sounds ...less pedals ....if it's good enough for Mike Campbell...it's good enough for me...cheers 👍

I'm hopefully going to finally build a small pedal board for myself because I find I almost never use my small collection of pedals because it's too much of a pain to take them out and set them up each time. Seeing this is great because it shows that you don't need a huge setup to get some great tones.

To this day it’s tuner into a compressor/boost, overdrive, and a couple different delays for the exact reasons you mentioned in the video. Once again, a lot of great information in a concise video. I love that you're demonstrating a basic set of pedals with a basic guitar through an amp that is accessible to most players - in this case, a vintage DR but the reissues are super useable as well. You are getting the idea across that a few well-chosen pedals can add up to a nice palette of colors. The core tone of the guitar and amp is on full display and when you use the pedals in the right context, they don't subtract - they add just the right vibe. So many players use pedals to "get" their tone rather than letting the guitar and amp speak. When I worked in music retail, I always tried to get the idea across that you are playing the guitar AND the amp - that a $2K guitar through a $150 amp was not the recipe for great tone. You're showing that basic tools used with taste and touch are the real deal - not 25 pedals through a modeling amp. Great job Zac!

Hey Zac, all my grab and go pedalboards are 5-6 pedals, and each amp has one. I prefer simple pedals (3-4 knobs). My Mesa MkIIB has mostly modulation pedals, as I have plenty of onboard distortion. My Blues Jr. board is similar to your setup. I find the less is more approach satisfying.

"Turn this baby on" :-) this sentence hits it! Dear Zac, you reminded me that I wanted to buy a separate tremolo. The one you have shown from BOSS is just right for this.
The pedals you showed are perfectly coordinated - quite to my taste. My set should contain 2 boards in the future. The first stage includes all preamps, treble boosters, overdrives using the gain stage method. The second stage includes multiple delay pedals, reverb, vibrato, tremolo & chorus. Between the two boards there is a volume pedal (BOSS) and a TS-808. There is another boost pedal in front of the amp. So I have gain reserves in all possible variations. And at the weekend I'll get a Hot Rod Deluxe Amp. Nice Combo. Thanks for this demonstration and stay healthy! PS: The reverb trick is awesome! Truetone Power Supply = Perfect! THANKS!!

Nudging a DM-3 to be a little more "reverberish" is a relatively simple mod. Find R17 on the board - a 22k (red/red/orange) resistor. This sets maximum amount of delay signal fed back to the input. Replace that 22k resistor with an end-to-end (series) pair of 10k resistors. Now, run a 15-18nf capacitor from the junction of those two resistors to the nearest usable ground point. That will provide a 6db/oct *additional* treble rolloff to each repeat, on top of the existing lowpass filtering the circuit provides to keep noise under control. The shallowness of this additional rolloff is important, since it still leaves some mids and treble to be trimmed back a little more with each repeat. The end result is that each repeat gets a little darker, not unlike the way later reflections in a room would have their treble content "eaten up" by the various absorptive surfaces and objects in the way, The perk is that it also smooths out some of the grittiness that comes with subsequent repeats at longest delay time (passing through 4096 bucket-brigade stages six or more times is NOT good for signal integrity!), and also means you can dime the Intensity control and not get screeching runaway feedback. Finally, because later repeats have less treble content, it moves them to the perceptual background, so your tone doesn't seem so "cluttered". I think you'll like it. And if you don't want it, install an SPST toggle between the cap and ground point so you can defeat it as needed.

Do you have any trouble adjusting your own stage volume (in other words, mixing yourself for solos, rhythm, etc.) with the compressor on, since you don’t have a dedicated boost pedal on this board?
Admittedly, you’re setting your compressor fairly subtly, whereas I have always set mine (a Boss CS-3) pretty squishy for years. But because of that, I’ve always had to run a volume pedal or boost or EQ after the compressor for solos because the compressor fights my guitar volume knob so much.
