    whoa. this is really awesome. all the songs i play use multiple tempo changes, so i can potentially make a click track in cubase, export it as an mp3 and record it to one of the pads and then route it just to my headphones so the front of house doesnt get the click track. This is not possible on the Roland SPD-S which I have been using for 15 years.

      Is it possible to route the backing track and the click separately even though they are linked in the SPDX? All members would want to control the level between the two for their in ears and the FOH obviously wants no click. I would love to do this without needing to take a laptop solely for this purpose if possible. Thanks. :)

    Awesome, useful, and concise video. Wish I had figured out the second method before I used click and track panned left and right on the same sample. Works well, but this is SO much better.

    Great video. I've been using method one for well over a year now with no issues. You're right though, you HAVE to hit it in time. So if your backing track is set for 120BPM, then set the internal met for 120BPM as well, then hit it right on the downbeat and you're good. I've never had any "drifting" issues if you follow this. Another tip for people using method: make SURE you've triggered it off properly. On a dark and busy stage you can find yourself hitting the pad to light (your pad settings play a factor here), or hitting off the pad. I think i've triggered the backing track and i actually didn't...then you're SOL, so hit it dead on, and watch that met light to make sure it triggered. I only made that mistake once, but it can happen...learn from me:) P.S. LOVE this method for the separate volume control between click and BT, and the ability to hear both click and BT in stereo-awesome!

    • @PTRRRW
      @PTRRRW 9 років тому +1

      +drumtravelfun Do you have the dynamics set to "off" on the pad? Because then you wouldn't have to hit it that hard, right? I can still see how that is pain live though!

    • @drumtravelfun
      @drumtravelfun 9 років тому

      +PTRRRW I have the pad sensitivity setting to its highest level, so i barely have to hit the pad to trigger the BT. I still hit firmly, i find it just helps to have the setting at that. I don't have all my pads set the same, I'm referring to the pad used to trigger BT's. I suggest experimenting, see what works for. Cheers:)

      +drumtravelfun turning dynamics off on that pad will work more accurately than changing sensitivity and make sure you have it set to 'mono' mode so accidental double triggering of the BT is impossible.

    Very instructive video...wishing I'd saved a bit more for this!
    I'm still using the roland spd-s... when triggering the backing track on the assigned pad, how do I stop it from being velocity sensitive? I don't want to hit it too hard in a live situation and then have it clipping, or hit too gently and then it's too quiet...

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  9 років тому

      +CIRQUS UK For the SPD-S, you can turn off dynamics through the 'Pad Control' setting in the unit. Simply hold [SHIFT] and press the PAGE buttons then hit the pad you want to change. Use page buttons to select the item to change then + - to change the values. See page 36 of the SPD-S manual which you can download from the Roland site under 'discontinued' products. Thank you.

    Greetings -you may have answered this below.. but is it possible to use and link those top 3 pads as "backing tracks" that would go through the main outputs? So, like that you might have 1) Synth bass on the first pad 2) hi hats on the second 3) a synth part on the third pad? And they could be linked? If so, can FX be processed in any of those pads real time.. or is that linking option only for a click and backing track. Hope this makes sense and thank you.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  9 років тому

      Jeremiah Conlon sorry for the delay. You can link any two pads to play simultaneously. If you need more layers, simply use the 'Perform & Record' option in the SAMPLING menu and create a new sample with whichever layers played at the same time. This new sample can then be assigned to any other pad and If you then assign all three pads to the same 'mute group' on the MENU-PAD page, you can have it so that when you hit the third pad, it turns off the previous ones. Remember each and every trigger or pad can have it's own output routing so you can send things out main, sub or headphones as you wish.

    Greetings... Is it possible to mute the sound of one pad with another pad on the roland spd sx and have the song play when unmuted, in principle, to replace the volume button by hitting the pad. Thank you.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  9 місяців тому +1

      No, you can not. You can't pause or mute a song from pad hits. You can use an external MIDI controller like the FC-300 and use the ctrl pedal set to MIDI controller 7 to send volume control info to the SPD-SX to dynamically control effects and volumes and more. You can also then switch patches using MIDI PC (program change) and assign the switches to different functions to control the SPD-SX remotely.
      Note that Mute groups stop sounds assigned on the same mute group as the pad being hit but hitting it again starts from the start rather than resuming. So not effectively changing the volume, as it sounds like you might need

    I'm hopeful that you respond as soon as possible as I haven't found any help anywhere on what I'm trying to do. Also, I'm still learning, so I don't know all of the technical phrases.
    I use in-ear monitors (I am the only one in the band that does). I am trying to figure out if I can route the internal click from the Roland SPD-SX to just my in-ear monitors. Is that possible? If not, I could create a click track and put it onto a pad, but how would I get that onto my in-ear monitors without having to wear headphones from the pad? I've never said this before, but I'm desperate. Please help.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  5 років тому +1

      Hi Samuel, yes you can route the internal SPD-SX click to phones only and either listen directly from the SPD-SX or send that signal to the separate in-ear monitoring system to hear with the rest of the band. You can also create your own click/backing track mix, assign that to a separate pad which is then pad-linked to the backing track pad. Simply change the routing of that pad in the KIT settings to SUB outs and send that to your in-ear system to be heard with the rest of the band audio? Clear? Keep in mind the click/backing track mix for you can be anything you like not just boring click as you will be the only one hearing it.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  10 років тому +1

      Abosolutley Grubaz you can have 2 simultaneous stereo mixes happening with one hit. You can route any pad to: MASTER L&R and PHONES, SUB 1&2 and PHONES or just phones and you can layer two stereo sounds per pad which could be click and backing combined and that can just go to the band. The pad linking too means you have lots of options.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  8 років тому +1

      thanks for the compliment. Pad link is only for linking one pad to another. You can however put the same sound on any pad, put two sounds on each pad and link for 4 simultaneous sounds (using each pad's SUB layer) or even 'Merge Sample' with or without efx to combine multiple samples onto one pad.

  • @freyalilymusic

    Brilliant video, thanks so much. Would you assign several songs to one kit or always use a different kit per song? e.g. if I've got three songs I want to play and I want to use your method of linking click routed through headphones and the backing track samples, would you choose a new kit and link Pads 1 + 2 each time, or could I for example just use the one kit, link Pads 1+2 for the first song, Pads 4+5 for the second, and Pads 7+8 for the third?

    • @onomatopoeidia
      @onomatopoeidia Рік тому

      You can do this both these ways. Pad linking can be set differently for each kit/patch so if you use a new kit for each song, you can have custom settings for each song.

    • @onomatopoeidia
      @onomatopoeidia Рік тому

      Many ways. put the song into a software program then :
      1.set the metronome to the tempo of the song if you know it and then mixdown just the click from the same position the music starts from ie: bar 1,1,1
      2. Record a click sound along to the music using note insert, step edit or from a sound assigned to a pad on the spdsx. Play along to the music then export/mixdown that as the click.

    • @tcellen2136
      @tcellen2136 21 день тому

      You can also Import the song into the Moises app and it will generate a click and also let you switch drums off and export any versions out to USB for use in the spdsx. They will be perfectly in time too.

    Hello Roland, I have a question. I'm using my Roland SPD-SX pad for backing tracks, a click and to play sounds with. I also have the pad sub outs going to a headphone amplifier which is powering another 4 headphones for my bands. Now, I know how to get the click, backing tracks and my pad sounds to all of our headphones VIA the sub out but I also want the backing tracks and my pad sounds to go out to the audience (through the master). Is this possible? Cheers

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  8 років тому

      +Drummer Kindo Hi, there are 2 ways to do this. I'd go with 1. as 2. uses more resources.
      1.
      use the headphones out on the SPDSX rather than the SUB outs to feed the headphone amp for the multiple headphones. Use a stereo insert cable TRS=>2 (L&R x TS lead) this way you can route click and track to headphones and the backing only to master. Other samples can be sent out SUB&headphones also for band and the audience to hear..note: there will be 4 channels on the front of house mixer required for this
      2.
      assign the same backing track file to another pad-linked pad but route this one to the MASTER outs. it will start exactly the same time as your band only backing track which has a different routing. The beauty of this setup is that you can have a different mix for the band versus what the audience hears. You'd simply create two different mixes when building your backing tracks. One could even have a click with it or different instrument levels? If you do this, Make sure you name the files for easy identification so you don't mix them up!
      Note: This second method uses two extra voices so make sure any sounds you don't need playing with polyphony are switched to mono in the PAD-MODE settings. ie. Kicks, snares, hihats and single shot loops. See the SPDSX complete guide for this explanation in the playback mode section.

  • @agerlach1

    Does the SPD-SX allow you to assign output to Master *only* or does it always have to be Master+phones or just phones? I ask because I will be sending 4 channels to FOH (snare, kick, toms and Roland pads) using Master/subs and panning. This will give sound engineer the most control. Ideally these would not go to phones as FOH will send these + full band mix back to me. I want to just send click to phones and backing track to phones+master. In this way turning up the phones volume on SPD-SX will only increase volume of click + backing in my IEMS in case I need to turn them up to hear over the rest of the mix. Is there any way to do this and still have 4 channels for drum mixing?

    Is it possible to link 3 pads at once ? Because on stage, I don't know what the balance will be until I play live, so I would like to have a pad for the recorded bass line, a second one for the percussions, and a third one for the click. That way I can balance everything and route everyone in wich output I want and still be able to set the volume of each one independantly ?

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  4 роки тому

      Sorry Sem but only two pad linking is currently possible. For this, I would use the internal click and pad-link the bass and percussion. It means you have to hit the parts in time with the click but it will play in time the whole track and you will still have control over the click level, it's sound and routing.

    How many backing tracks can you have loaded in at once...for a live show setting? What if you have a show that requires a 12 song set...are you only limited to 9 backing tracks at once...or can you scroll to the next backing track on an individual pad after your done with that specific track?

      you can normalize the files so they are at digital maximum. You can then simply take the loudest sounds down in the SPDSX using the pad volume which is individual for each pad/trigger. I just bought a used SPD-SX and they guy who sold it told me you can program a pad to start after a certain number of bars with the click. That would be one way to get around the issue with the first option. For example, let's say I have a backing track on pad 1 in 120bpm, using the internal click. When I hit the pad it will trigger it, wait one bar and then start playing. Thus eliminating the "perfect timing" issue on the downbeat. Is this possible? I haven't tried it yet but it sounds reasonable.
    I'm not a native english speaker so please excuse my grammar.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  9 років тому

      +PTRRRW no you can't program the click to start later than the pad hit..The click's start/stop can be instantly triggered from a pad but not linked to play another sample at the same time so you still need to manually start the click then start the backing track/sample from another pad by hitting it in time.
      You can of course create a backing track with as much gap as you like at the start but the best way if you want perfectly in time click is still using method 2. thanks for asking.

    Is it possible to link two Pads, one for my metronome and one for the sample, but have them start at different times? So when im starting the song, i hit the pad 1 for the metronome and in the chorus, i hit pad 2 to start the sample. But both pads are automatically in time with each other and i dont have to worry about perfect hitting?

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  5 років тому

      I don't quite understand what you mean but you can only link one set of two pads via pad link per kit patch. You can use mute groups to silence currently playing samples with the last hit taking over.

    I've been using the SPD SX to play backing tracks in my band. I'm using a footswitch to trigger the tracks, and I have a question that no one has yet been able to answer:
    If I step on the footswitch twice, then the backing tracks will trigger a second time ON TOP OF the first set of backing tracks. If this were to accidentally happen in a live setting then it would definitely ruin the song. Is there a way to set the footswitch where it cannot trigger again on top of a sample that is already playing?

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  9 років тому

      BrandonD Hello yes it's easy. You need to change the playback 'Mode' of the sample to 'Phrase' instead of poly/single which is used for percussion sounds generally and not backing tracks. Phrase mode will then start and stop via the foot switch in an ALT style meaning once to start the sample and again to stop it. go to MENU-PAD (ENTER) MODE and choose PHRASE as the template. We will have some short and sweet FB vids coming shortly showing these options and how they affect the sample playback. Check our Roland V-Drums Australia facebook page.

    The issue with this is that once you have the click and backing track coming out separately there are no further outputs for just the kit itself. So the engineer is going to get a load of backing track as well as the kit samples. Is that correct? If so it really isn't that good is it?

    • @tcellen2136
      @tcellen2136 21 день тому +1

      the click and backing comes out the phones and you have 4 separate outs to go to front of house. The front of house engineer gets the backing track in stereo on two channels and the drum sounds on two separate channels too.

      +Tim Caramin sorry it's not possible with the built-in click at the moment. The way around is to use the second method and import a bar (or as many bars you like) of your own click with the accent marking the one. You then simply assign this to a pad, set it to loop mode and use the ALT play mode so it starts and stops with a hit.

      yes, you can use the SPD-SX with your hands but we have the HPD-20 HandSonic for that. • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  7 років тому

      Only two pads can be linked however you can also use the SUB layer on each trigger for another stereo sample at the same time. This way with just two linked pads you have 4 sounds each with their own volume. To build up more layers, simply create new multi-layered stereo samples. You could do this digitally with no loss in quality by using 'Perform&Record' in the 'Sampling' options page and then assigning these new samples to any pad and also the SUB layer. You can continue layering on top of this until you have as many layers as you need. Each time you do this you can adjust the volume so they are balanced as you like.

    Also, it might be risky to have backing tracks play from a pad that might get hit accidentally, right? That's one worry I would have, even if the flat pads are angled differently. To clarify, do you have to hit the very top of those top three pads to trigger a sample?

    • @memumra4

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  9 років тому

      Jeremiah Conlon you could also use an external pad like the BT-1 bar trigger. This can then be placed anywhere out of normal reach or some place more handy like at the top of tom1 on your kit. The BT-1 has a unique design where it definitely won't trigger unless struck directly which makes it perfect to avoid show stopping accidental hits.You simply set the external trigger type on the SPD-SX to BT-1 when using it.

Say, for example after opening a kit, I have sample 1 triggered the first time I press the footswitch, sample 2 triggered the 2nd time, 3rd the 3rd time etc. Essentially, like using "counter" and "sfplay~" in Max/MSP. This would be VERY useful.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  8 років тому

      great question. Currently although you can setup a kit chain and step through them with a footswitch by using the "KIT INC" command, It's not possible to trigger a sound at the same time on this same switch. Pads/triggers/Footswitches can currently only be assigned one function at a time so you can either trigger a sound OR link to trigger another pad OR switch a command. Something you could do is use a dual footswitch like the BOSS FS6 or FS7 so then you can use one switch to change kits in your chain you've setup and the other one to trigger sounds. The limitation here is it takes approximately one second before the new sample is ready to play after switching kit patches. So.... the best way is still to layout the samples in the sequence you want on the different pads on the spdsx and play them one after another by hitting the pads in sequence.

      Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, that's not possible when played in real-time using the internal SPD-SX samples. You can of course use the SPD-SX as a MIDI controller and audio streamer in conjunction with any DAW software that may include that feature.

    Can you not just have pad 2 start/stop the built in click of the SPD-SX and pad link it to pad 1, which will have your backing track. That way when you hit pad 1 your SPD-SX click will start at the exact moment as your backing track. Additionally, you would be also able to control the click's volume right?

      +salt trader drummers generally prefer the second method of importing their own click as then it also frees up the music creation process allowing one to make timing and time signature changes as they see fit without having to worry about how it will be played live. it doesn't have to be a full song-length çlick either if there are no timing changes as you can set the click of any length to loop until hit again which saves sample space should you need it.
      The second method also means you can be sure they always play perfectly in time together no matter what happens on stage under the lights with nerves ;-}

    Hi there i have a question,im using roland td30 and roland spdsx via midi live,the td30 is running accoustic triggers and im using the spdsx to layer sounds,my problem is i want to use the spdsx to run backing tracks via the pad link method but the click always goes to front of house as to hear my spdsx and td30 together in my headphone mix im coming out of the mix in channel of the td30 and into the phones of the spdsx,is there a way of hearing both the td30 and the spdsx via midi and also using the pad link method but without sending the phones to the front of house via this method ??? thanks in advance for your help

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  4 роки тому

      yes. Simply change the TD-30 mix-in routing so it only goes to headphones of the TD-30. Connect the phones out of the SPD-SX into the mix-in of the TD-30 using a TRS-TRS cable (stereo). Route the pad-linked click that you have assigned on the SPD-SX to go out of phones only of the spd-sx. The pad-linked backing track will go to main outs of the SPDSX and the phones so both you and the audience will hear it. Any sound layers you are using on the SPD-SX can be sent out of SUB and phones so you can hear them and the front of house engineer then can have TD-30, SPD-SX sample layers and SPD-SX backing track all separately on the front of house mixer. Make sense? simon

      @@seanwalsh7608 The TRS cable you are mentioning sounds like an 'Insert' cable. This is a cable with a TRS/Stereo connector on one end and two TS mono jacks on the other end commonly labelled 'Send' and 'Return' This is not the cable you need. You just need a TRS to TRS cable from the PHONES out on the SPD-SX to the MIX-IN of the TD-30. This single cable will give you the stereo output from the SPD-SX through the TD-30 to your headphones. This also leaves the Main outs of the TD-30 and SPD-SX free to connect to the audience sound system and you'll have your own mix on stage. Just make sure the MIX-IN of the TD-30 is routed to PHONES only.

    Hi - I am new to the SPD-SX.Can you help to get a tutorial or videos to learn a simple loop concept with SPD-SX.I am kind of confused with the kit & pad tempo.I am trying to get a shaker tone to run in a loop. I remember in SPD-20,There is a way to use the in-house shaker loop where it will run in loop for sometime until I hit the pad next time...Thanks much...

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  10 років тому

      Hi,
      to loop any sound, simply choose the 'LOOP' template in the MENU-PAD-MODE. New to the SPD-SX is the ability to choose the loop repeats LOOP =ON, X2, X4, X8
      As far as kit and tempo. First you use Tempo Match to tell the SPD-SX how long the loop is in bars and beats simply by listening to it and counting then entering it. It then calculates the exact tempo of the loop for you.
      You can then set the entire SPD-SX kit patch to that tempo if you want.
      Once the loop is tempo matched and it's 'Tempo Sync' is switched on, whenever you change the master tempo on the front page, the loop will change tempo perfectly with the tempo of the unit.
      For example you could have a different tempo for each song in your set and each kit you select changes the tempo of the loops and the click you hear. See the sections on this in the manual and here....
      Working out tempo of a loop so it loops evenly.
      1.
      IMPORTANT: make sure the loop is trimmed to loop cleanly. Use wavelab, soundforge, Tools, Logic etc to get it right before importing
      2.
      Press: MENU-PAD-
      3.
      Select the wave you want to tempo match and also turn on TEMPO SYNC from the KIT PAD main page
      4.
      Press: QUICK and use the down cursor to choose the last item TEMPO MATCH
      5.
      Use the cursors + - to select the loop length
      6.
      Press enter to set the kit tempo to this new tempo. This is the tempo you will find in MENU-KIT 'KIT TEMPO'
      Back on the main screen, TEMPO is where you adjust the master tempo. Changing this will affect the speed of your loops. This is great when you are slaving to Ableton etc live as when the DJ changes the tempo of the show, your samples will adjust accordingly...Nice!

      +lincoln carr this method can work but remember that it will be mono which is not ideal for the audience.
      More importantly, if you do this you must make sure you mix your backing track down to mono before exporting it with the click!
      You can't just simply turn the pan pot to left or right of your backing track or you will lose one entire side of the stereo mix which will sound terrible.
      for example: If a guitar is in the left side of the stereo mix and you pan the entire stereo track to the right, you won't hear any guitar in your mono backing track so be careful when creating your tracks..

      yes, you can change the playback mode of any of the pad samples to "Loop alt". This means hit once to start an infinite loop and hit again to stop it. You can also choose loop but with a set number of bars eg: Loop x4 where the loop will repeat 4 times and then stop. This can be very handy for setting all your phrases to the same length. eg: a one bar loop set to 2x can be made to repeat twice for two bars with a single hit etc.

I was also using acoustic triggers on my kick and snare, and occasionally hitting other pads for sounds during the songs. My issue is that during TWO songs of the set, halfway through, Pad 1, which was running the tracks, just cut out. I definitely didn't hit it on accident, and the click/my other pads kept running. It was devastating to be totally honest. We had to cut the songs short since it was just me, a keyboard player, and a singer on stage and the songs were so track heavy. WHAT HAPPENED?!? How can I avoid this in the future?! It kills me to feel like my SPD-SX is not as reliable at running tracks as I thought it was.

      ""
      It's because you are using up the polyphony/number of simultaneous
      voices possible.
      You can get around this by setting any percussion sounds to MONO instead
      of POLY in the MENU/PAD/MODE screen.
      Poly-in this case meaning multiple, is used for playing one sound over
      another but if it's a stereo sample it will use two voices for each hit.
      Play a bunch of hits and the previous layer will continue to play with
      another on top until it runs out of voices and then it 'robs' a voice
      from somewhere else, in this case your backing track.
      Mono-meaning in this case, one sound at a time mode ensures a fresh
      sample is triggered each time which frees up voices and also makes a
      cleaner sound especially for kick drums.

Or should I set every pad I'm playing including the external drum triggers and sounds on the spd-sx pads to MONO? Is basically what you're saying that setting any pads to MONO (like track and click) allow those pads to override all other pads and play all the way through no matter what?

      @craigsmith3499 8 років тому

      +Craig Smith Ah, from what I'm seeing now, it looks like the safest way would be to set every sample I have to MONO including the backing tracks, click, external triggers, and 1-shot sounds on the pads. This way I can conserve as many voices as possible. The thing I'm still kind of concerned about is though, there's no way to lock out a pad to make it #1 priority no matter what? Or will there always be a possibility that it could turn off if you use up all the voices? I just need an airtight, full-proof way of running backing tracks off here while I can be POSITIVE the track/click will not shut off and where I can play other things off the spd-sx simultaneously.

      @roland_aus  8 років тому +1

      Hi Craig yes setting any voices that don't need to play on top of themselves is a good safe way to work. Usually percussion sounds are best to set to mono. Backing tracks are generally struck once to start and again to stop and play one at a time so setting them to mono makes no difference. User voice preference for important sounds is a good idea we are investigating further.
      The SPDSX has 16 voice polyphony maximum meaning you can have 8x stereo sounds happening at one time before the next one cuts out the first playing so that's quite a few simultaneous parts. If you had a backing track, loops playing on top (4 voices total) and four limbs of live percussion that comes to 12 voices so you would still have 2 more simultaneous stereo sounds before you reach the limit. You could also consider assigning some sounds to mute groups so they play instead of each other rather than on top? ie bass loops, percussion loops etc See the complete guide blog for MUTE GROUPS and how they can be used. Can I take tracks from an old Alesis MMT8 sequencer and put them into the Roland SPD SX?

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  7 років тому

      Not directly. You can connect the MMT8's MIDI out to the SPD-SX's MIDI in, assign MIDI note numbers to pads and use the sounds of the SPD-SX. The MMT8 was a midi sequencer so you'd need to play those midi sequences into a DAW like Ableton Live, Logic etc and record the MIDI data into a new track. You would then assign sounds to those notes and you could then 'bounce' or mixdown those loops, phrases or entire audio sequence out as a WAV file to load into the SPD-SX. Checkout the MIDI vs Audio Blog here www.rolandcorp.com.au/blog/midi-vs-audio

    I'm already using this method, but me and couple of my drummer friends are all getting into a bit of trouble now. We're short on space! When you're using a click track it actually doubles the space it takes for one song, and concidering that most of us use around 20-30 songs with backing tracks per night, we're really busting our brains on the solution for this one.
    Do you have any suggestions? The only thing i figured out would be to have separate backup files for each band, and every time you go to a gig you have to restore the accurate backup file. But that just sounds too complicated and too risky...

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  10 років тому +2

      Hi Percussive, i'd recommend different backups for your different shows. it's a very good idea to backup your unit anyhow and it's a safe operation although it can take some time depending on the size of your patches so best to do it the night before the gig. The other option would be to only use mono versions of the click which will then halve it's size. 16bit 44k WAV audio consumes 5MB per channel per minute so 10MB per minute of stereo audio. Hope this helps!

    • @jeremykelshaw9884
      @jeremykelshaw9884 9 років тому +3

      Hey Percussive - best space saving solution is to export a 1 bar click & set it to "loop" on the patch. Tiny file, goes on endlessly, just hit the mute button at the end of the song !! Hope that helps.

    • @MladenDragovicMusic
      @MladenDragovicMusic 9 років тому

      That is an EXCELLENT idea! Thanks!
      At least it will save room when the song is in one tempo from beginning to the end and there are no ritardandos... Only downside is that you have to manually stop it, but that's not a big issue.
      It doesn't solve the problem of low storage space on the long run, but it will have to do for now.
      I'll probably go for Ableton Live and multitrack backing tracks in the future...
      Thanks again!

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  9 років тому

      Dave Fasho good idea. We havn't done one yet but may. For now, simply use the supplied wave manager software. In wave manager, you can easily save and load individual files or complete backups of the spdsx.
      Simply choose "save all" and it will ask you for a storage location. Repeat the process using "load all" to choose a saved backup. Each one of the backups will save every sample and the pad assignment, efx and midi setup, click routing options so you can save a different setup for every particular show.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  5 років тому

      if the click is mixed in with the audio in the middle, no, you can't unbake a cake. If the click and music are on opposite left and right channels then you can use a DAW like Audacity to separate the two channels and export them as two new files. Loading these into the SPD-SX and using the second method via pad-link would work. The limitation would be audio quality as they would both be mono.

    Can the SPD-SX run general midi files as backing tracks and have it set the click track?

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  7 років тому

      Sorry Tony no as it is not a sound engine. You would have to record your MIDI file performances as WAV files and then bring them in. If you also record a click out as a WAV at the same time as a separate WAV files then you can synchronize the two as shown in this video. As you will also have an exact BPM you could also opt to use the internal SPD-SX click. Just make sure you bounce out your backing track from bar 1 beat 1 so it's in time with the click when triggered in time.

      while the SPDS didn't have the multiple outs or separate click, it did have layering so you could assign your backing track to WAVE A and pan it to the left and assign your click to wave B and pan that to the right. The backing track would go to the front of house/audience and perhaps a little mixer for you on stage combined with the WAVE B/Click channel. Keep in mind your backing track will be in mono as it's a single channel rather than the SPD-SX full stereo pair..

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  8 років тому

      +lincoln carr Hi Lincoln, it's a good question but mine is if you listen to stereo at home, why not at a gig?
      We all have two ears and all the SPDSX sounds and most music released in the world has been in stereo since it's invention in the 1930's 'so you're audience is missing out if you're only playing back mono sound.
      Even if the sound system at the venue is summing in mono, musicians always to perform better with stereo mixes on stage so get your sound the best you can and the audience can suffer in mono if that's the only choice but it's a big trade-off.
      Space wise, here are some tips:
      1.
      Use mono click tracks. This halves the space required
      2.
      Delete the factory sounds and any backing tracks you're not using and save a backup of just each gigs setup separately from the others as a different backup and load that before the show.
      The SPDSX stores 3 1/2 hours of music so if you're doing a longer set than that, simply load the show part 2 backup between sets. It will take up to five minutes but you'll need at least that much break if you've just played 3 1/2 hours? See how you go?

    Hi, I think both methods are perfect, but I have a problem with the Master Output of my new SPD-SX:
    Anything that is set to sound only in the phones output (click track for example), can be heard (at a low volume) in the master output. It could be fixed by reducing the gain, but I don't think it is normal to heard that.
    I haven't seen a lot of drummers using the phones output, but I don't know if this is the reason.
    Thank you

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  7 років тому

      Bleed from the built-in click should not be audible at normal playing levels..
      if you have your own WAV click assigned to a pad and that is routed to phones only you should not hear it at all through the MAIN outputs. Make sure you don't have it routed through KIT EFX1 or 2 which would then be sending some of it's signal out the MAIN outs? If you think there may be an issue with your SPD-SX, please have it checked out by a Roland service agent?

      thundersnare you simply set a 'KIT TEMPO' in the KIT menu then chain kits in order as you wish to create an instant, easy to get to set-list.
      Switching kits then instantly changes the tempo on the front panel so you just have to press click to go. You could also use any of the pads to switch kits up and down and also assign click start and stop to a pedal or any trigger making it the ultimate click-track.

      +Jojo .Aa Hello, that should not happen.
      We've just tested this here using an oscilloscope and can confirm there is absolutely no click coming from the sub or main outputs when the click is only routed to the headphones out via the MENU-SYS-CLICK page.
      You may be hearing bleed from the headphones on stage through any open microphones? Make sure you have disconnected headphones from the SPD-SX and try again? If you are still hearing it, please contact a Roland service center to have your SPD-SX checked.

      I am using In-Ear monitor on stage and we've tested with all returns off (+in-ear unplugged). I forgot something really important: the click is very low but audibable when the master out volume is setted to +6 or +12db in system options. When 0db this click is so low than not audible and its a possible workaround .
      Is there a possibility that this issue has been introduced with a system upgrade?
      I used the version 1.04 of SPD-SX OS.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  9 років тому

      +Jojo .Aa It's difficult without knowing your signal flow but you need to make sure your gain structure is correct ie:
      1.
      samples normalised and set to around 100 for their pad volumes
      2.
      for loops or backing tracks set dynamics óff' so they play at consistent highest volume
      3.
      When connecting the spdsx to DI's start with any pad (-20dB etc) off for maximum sensitivity into the front of house/P.A mixer
      For normal line level operation with correct gain structure you should set the SPD-SX to 0dB and master out to 3/4 and should have more than enough gain.
      Please provide details of your setup if still having issues?

    if possible make a SPD Sx like model but with SPD 20 ie 8 blocks as many players are used to that design now it's difficult to set on SPD Sx and more over the pad num 1,2 & 3 are not that good for playing rolls like we play on block. playing rolls on block are much easy to play Rather than playing on that 1,2,&3 number strips. so Sx with 8 blocks will be a hit models specially in India. where Roland have to relaunch SPD 20 inspite on closing it's production. still I India old SPD 20 like 12-15 yrs old used SPD 20 are sold at price of $370+.

    • @roland_aus

      that model that replaces the SPD-20 is the SPD-30 Octapad and it's already been available for many years

      Dear sir, yes For your info SPD 20 is relaunched in India as SPD 20X. as there is huge demand of SPD 20. so jst like SPD 20X,SPD 30 and Yamaha Dtx M12, SPD Sx should also have pitch Change function. even Alesis sample pad have this function.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  7 років тому

      SPD-SX has pitch change. QUICK MENU-WAVE PITCH

    • @bhargavthaker6632
      @bhargavthaker6632 7 років тому

      thats useless because for Eg we change our pitch to ay +2 and we want to play and check weather its tuned right, we cannot listen unless we save it. and another problem is that it either overwrites orignial wave or creates new wave now, if i have 3000 waves the new wave which is created is saved on 3001 so i have to go a long way to 3001 which is very time consuming. so it should be like we can listen to it and then save. it should be like SPD 20.

    • @bhargavthaker6632
      @bhargavthaker6632 7 років тому

      DTX M12 and Alesis are similar pads if we can change pitch like spd 20 in that then why not in Spd SX? for your information Roalnd India have relaunched SPD 20X as still there is huge demand of spd 20. Its similer to Spd 20 just have changed Screen, added some more sound and gave memory card slot to save and transfer patches

      Hi Jorge! Thanks for your question. Yes you have 2GB of built-in memory so about 3.5 hours of recording time is available. You can playback any length of sample that you like so entire songs of any length or even an entire DJ set is possible if you're lazy ;-}

    Why isn't there a way to send just the click, no track to phones? That's a major option that got overlooked because Roland doesn't do enough field testing. What if my drummer wants to not hear synth tracks or whatever? The entire digital music industry is literally 10 years behind the rest of the tech industry. It blows my mind that with all that's available today I can't connect a smart phone or tablet to the SPD and control everything from there via a Roland App. Your'e confined to these 2004 style buttons that change at every new screen and aren't even properly illuminated. I have a real love-hate with this incredible device.

    • @roland_aus

      +lincoln carr you need to un-assign the old sample from the pad and if no longer needed, delete it from the WAVE LIST. Then simply make a new sample into any kit with an unassigned pad/trigger like FS1 for example. Any sample you make in the SPDSX will be on the WAVE LIST and you can assign it to any pad of any kit.

    Are there any useful videos out there. Seems like everybody is asking the same stupid questions. Why isn't anybody asking how to play a constant Loop live. How come nobody is asking how to do simple things. All the questions coming in for the Roland SPD are the stupidest questions that you could possibly come up with that nobody is using.

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  6 років тому

      Hi Dan, this video was designed to help those with a specific click focus but happy to help with whatever you need. To play a constant loop, simply set the play mode of the sound as LOOP ALT. This will then start the loop which will continue indefinitely until struck again. If you like you can also set a number of repeats. Let us know what else you'd like help with? Simon

    Is there a way to trigger the internal click with pad link? I have set the internacl click to trigger from pad 6 and I have my backing track on pad 4, but linking them (Pad 4 to pad 6) with the pad link option doesn't trigger the internal click when hitting pad 4. Is there a way?

    • @roland_aus

      It's not possible for a pad-linked pad to do another control function at the same time apart from triggering a sound.
      Although, this is possible on the SPD-SX PRO.

    How do I change the time signature of the click?

    • @roland_aus
      @roland_aus  3 роки тому

      Sorry Brian there is no time signature setting. If for example, you wanted a click in 7/8 you would simply choose 1/8 notes for the click and get a constant stream of 1/8 notes with no accent on the first beat. In this case, I'd recommend using an imported WAV click you could generate from a DAW such as Ableton, Logic, etc. It can then also be more complex and also incorporate music to make it easier to follow. Hope this helps.
