The only actual downside to helicopter careers is the lack of money earning potential compared to the airlines. We're not doing it for the money, we fly helicopters because we love the job. People who bash helicopters, or specific helicopter models like Robinson's are blissfully ignorant. They ignore or are ignorant of other major manufacturer's like Bell with models that have the same exact pitfalls. It's ironic when people think helicopters are dangerous and then jump into a DA-40 which has unrecoverable fully developed flat spin characteristics...
This is a great video, and it alleviates some of my worries about entering the industry. One topic I’d love to see a video about would be a quick guide to handling ATC and radio communications in helicopters. I’ve heard from pilots that this is a pretty difficult part of training, and I think it would be interesting to hear your thoughts
So true ! I’m a flight paramedic who decided to make the move to helicopter pilot , currently at 1000 hrs and getting ready to start my next job . I want to fly EMS one day …. But it’s funny how many helicopters pilots talk down on HEMS …. I know what the flying is like , that’s why I want to do it .
Devin my question is about P.I.C. and F. O. During flight are the helicopters that need two pilots like in airplanes one the p .i.c. flies the aircraft and the f.. o works the radioes?
I've been a nurse since my early 20s and I've been wanting to do a career change into EMS pilot or fire pilot. Currently 26M and I have a lot of piercings, long hair, and visible tattoos (neck and hands). These are acceptable in the Nursing field (depending on the specialty) but I was wondering how they'd be viewed in your career?
I am a 2,000 hour single, multi, instrument, commercial pilot. I am 47 years old. I got my helicopter commercial add-on last year. I have 134 Hours in Helicopters. The biggest hurdle I face is finding a place that can use my experience and insure me as both a fixed with and helicopter pilot. In Tampa Florida. I do aerial surveying in fixed wing and helicopters, however, my time in the helicopter is always with the owner of the helicopter because I can't be insured to fly his helicopter on my own. Thoughts?
I'm on my PPL path right now. I'm exploring ways to close the gap between 250 and 1500 once I get there. How is the aerial surveying path and how should I explore that?
@@BarronKane Surveying is an excellent way to hone your skills, but it's a hard game to get into. Not too many opportunities for helicopter pilots. Mostly fixed wing stuff.
@@quintenpronk2966 Yeah. The school I went to for my addon said they would hire me for tours, but then when the time came (after I spent the $30,000) said they had too many instructors that wanted the time. A little bait and switch... I own a land surveying company, so it wasn't the end of the world. I'm just not a fan of being lied to.
The worst part about the industry is that its impossible to get into even after you have every single liscense and every single safety course available. You can do everything right a be a great student and pilot and then watch shitbags go on and get jobs in the industry just becuase of who thier dad is or because they like the same beer as the chief pilot at thier flight school
I'm not sure what your experience is but that's the exception, not the rule. Or at a minimum this is a toxic environment who's way of doing business is not representative of the aviation world as a whole.
Poland here. 34yr , at the very beggining of raising money for PPL(h) and hopefully if I will be fit for it I want to pursue CPL , also in Poland . Do you think my age would be taken as a negative in future job hunt or is it not that relative ?
I believe most of the hate towards helicopters more specifically the Robinsons are from uneducated, non pilots or someone who has never flown one . Reminds me of so called sports analysts, one will make a negative comment on a player and almost every other analyst parrots them . Robinsons are one of the safest helicopters, they do have flaws thats why they make training in them more specialized , and SFAR training as well. They wouldnt be the most popular , used helicopter in the world if they were as bad as people acted . And u ask any pilot who trained on them, and moved on to bigger and better, they all say, they r better pilots because flying a robinson. And will always given a chance fly one again for fun. As to cost, helicopter training is stupid expensive, but you have to figure ,its the same cost as someone going to a good university , except in helicopters its all within a year generally ,while university is 4 years ,and easier to get student loans . As to no pilot aircraft, people wont get into driverless automobiles, dont think people for a long long time will get in any kind of aircraft and not have a human pilot .
Money isn't everything! You can make 6 figures+ at another job and wind up wishing you had the time and money to fly helicopters on the weekend. Why not just live the dream?
Started flying heli's at my local airport this year, your videos helped me make the choice! Thanks again, not looking back.

Tbh the only reliable way is cfi work or paying until you have around 500 hours and can do tours.

As much as a Life Flight cost when you're injured I can't imagine you're not getting a decent wage what are you calling poor pay
Operating cost is the majority of Life Flight Cost.
