You two guys discussing the reasons why you are so much attached to the images created by the 28mm focal length brought up some heartfelt memories to my mind. Some 20 years ago I asked one of Brazil's foremost film director, Anselmo Duarte, why he had chosen the 28mm focal length as his favorite lens for filmmaking. Before I go further, let me give you a quick insight on Anselmo's cinematography carreer. Before becoming a film director, Anselmo went through a very successful carreer as an actor with main role appearances in 35 feature films. In 1957 he directed his 1st film. In 1962 he produced and directed "O Pagador de Promessas" (The Given Word) which was awarded 10 Best Film awards in major international film festivals around the world, including Cannes' Golden Palm and an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
Well, as I was saying, to answer my question, Anselmo started puntuating that filmmaking, just like photography, is an all about matter of telling a story. In this precise pursuit, before telling the story, one must project beforehand the images of the story in his own mind. In this regard each individual projects those images with different visual perspectives which, under the optical world is translated into focal length glasses. Anselmo's own visual perspectives, he said, were by and large very much close to what a 28mm lens "sees". "I dream in 28mm focal length", he added.
You pointed out correctly the human "normal" visual perspective as being that of a 50mm focal length. However, also as you underline, our spacial, lateral perception of the world "sees" much beyond the 50mm framing. Therefore, taking a picture or making a film in wider than the average human "in focus" view tells a story much richer in details, let's call them "subconscious" perspective beyond the restrictive confinement of the average, dull, 50mm focal length.
Chosing a wide angular lens is not an easy choice for a filmmaker. The wider the perspective, the more elements needed to be visually "treated" by lighting and art directors. However, this more intensive hard work to put all together in shooting a scene pays off at the end, bringing about a richer immersion of the viewer into the story being told.
If you have a chance, Samuel, watch some of the scenes of "O Pagador de Promessas" (UA-cam) and see by yourself what Anselmo meant by "richer immersion", particularly the scenes on the church's stairways. He used primarily Cooke 28mm glasses and Angenieux 40mm anamorphic.
I am not surprised to realize that some of the most notable filmmakers developed their signature styles through the imagery of 28mm and wider focal lengths such as, Spielberg (21mm), Joel and Ethan Coen (27mm and 32mm - stays between 25-40mm), David Cronemberg (27mm), David Fincher (27mm and 35mm), Coppola (40mm anamorphic (most of Godfather)), Kubrik (18mm), Scorsese (25mm - 32mm), Terry Gilian (28mm and wider), Polansky (40mm anamorphic), etc.
By the way, Anselmo's first ever experience in cinematography was dancing in a scene directed by Orson Wells, 1947 in Rio de Janeiro ("All is True"). "Citizen Kane", mind you, was filmed primarily in 27mm focal length.
I can assure you that all of the above account on Anselmo Duarte's personal insights are all true.
    I am his son.

Relaxing and fun video! Thanx. I use 28 equivalent for street, maybe because I just restarted shooting a few years ago and I am a bit shy for some things, but then I realized how versatile it is. Started with two smallish Fujis (XT-20 and XE2) with the XF18mm F2.

I’m really happy I came across this video because I’ve been shooting street for many years on iPhone and I always love the wide perspective and the story I get from the context. But I have been criticised for not getting closer to my subjects and not being clear about where to focus. While it’s true and I may be a bit uncomfortable shoving my camera into people’s faces I also like to see certain situations as they are having the urge to capture the actual moment with everything that’s going on there. I’ve felt like I had to justify my choice of not being close enough. Your perspective actually is really helpful. I think I’m going to test the camera with 28, it’s been on my mind for some time now. Thank you for being authentic too.

I think 24mm is more like architectural/landscape focal length. Also 24mm is usually where distortion starts. 35mm is probably one of the best focal lengths but if you want a photo which is more versatile and more challenging to compose, 28mm is the best. 28mm gives you more challenge to compose your photos because you can mix wide/architectural shots with street/urban style.

    • @SamuelStreetlife

I've been shooting a GR3 and the original Leica Q for while now and enjoy the different experiences. They are redundant in focal length but I tend to shoot very different with each. Also, my Q has a problem with the EVF/LCD sensor so I turned it off and use it exclusively with the EVF. Now I have a viewfinder only camera and a LCD only camera, which is enough to make a difference.

  • @johncvelasco

The benefit of 28mm on a high res sensor is you can crop to mimic 35mm and still have respectable resolution. But on a 35mm you lose those details absolutely, with no turning back to the moment. That's why I chose the Ricoh GR III not IIIx. It's such a sharp camera it gives room to crop, whilst being versatile for street photography, especially if you're chasing Sun shadows to help frame, a wider lens gives you space to move, as you can't move the Sun!

In fact 35mm is a good primary focal length and 28mm as second. As smartphones mostly have 28mm I think that you could become the new "standard". 50mm is from old days and too narrow in my opinion. Better use a 35mm and crop.

exactly - bring us the GRii back with the built-in flash and an iconic 28mm, and without IS but with more buttons on the back. and the dust... do something instead of trying pushing more customers-newcomers with 40mm and tomorrow with 60 (?)
My 4 years old (possible 5 - I bought it used on eBay) GR (GRii without WIFI) died two weeks ago and now I'm looking to buy another GR-GRii (16.2mp), not iii or iiix.

@@joeltunnah True and I agree, but what about shooting at night? It would be hard to freeze a shot or get it sharp due to slow SS. Bumping it to ISO 6400 or 3200 on a 1/2.3 and slow lens isn't really ideal either

It's interesting how uncomfortable you seem to be carrying expensive gear. It seems like it really bothers you to have something that seems extravagant or is interpreted by others as extravagant. People who do craft work love to have really nice tools to do that craftwork and sometime they just want a beautiful tool (which of course is expected to have high quality also). It's 100% okay you dumped the leica but I think a lot of it has to do with how you feel others will interpret you and even your own comfort with something that is expensive. Which is very interesting. End of the day you should do what you are most comfortable with, of course but I do think if you could let go of that piece, you would not have even cared at all and could have enjoyed your leica experience with less discomfort. Some people have acted that way when I had the Canon 5D, they would be like OH THATS A CAMERA and react to it in a big way in particular if I had a big lens on it. I ignored it and did not care at all, I loved those camera's and they work for me exquisitely. Recently tho to get a canon R5 would cost the same amount as the leica.. and I have an R6.. I just wanted more MP's so for fun I decided to go the Leica route to try something new. I feel like the canon line has been grossly overpriced.. I could get a 5D always for 3k.. and now its 5K for what seems to be the equivalent. I just got mad canon increased the price so much from a line I have purchased for over 15 years. (I bought a 5D classic used, later got a mark III and then a Mark IV I sold for the R6 so I could access RF glass and have a smaller body). But I used to get a big response to those canon's if I walked around with them from people acting like I had a leica basically. No one I know in real life has a clue what a leica is, which has been surprisingly nice I will admit to not have that "zomg thats expensive reaction" but I have learned being a little older that these are things I earned, these are things I want and I do not care what others think. If it made you uncomfortable of course you should not keep it, but I would say do not worry about that in ANY of your gear, you owe no one an explanation and if they interpret one expensive item as meaning you're loaded thats on them not you. I do think sometimes we identify ourselves as a certain type of person and when we move out of that it can feel uncomfortable if there are stereotypes around other items we may have or want. it could be the house you live in, the car you drive.. or even the clothing you wear. We have all created architectypes of who we are and where we "fit in" but in reality those are silly.
