it can get sketchy! In fact, that is a major reason the mall has fallen apart. The area has slowly gotten rundown so this led to an increase in crime which meant a lot of the mall’s business stores closing down.

This is one of the malls from my childhood. I used to live in Indianapolis in my elementary school years. I also remember Eastgate and Lafayette Square.
I think my parents bought stuff for our home from Sears and some of our clothing from the other stores in the mall. Osh Kosh, Lazarus, Stride Rite and Kit n Caboodle were ones I remember as well.
Eastgate is the other one I visited a lot as well. I heard that one closed a while ago and today the building has been repurposed as a data center company called Lifeline Data Centers. Might be interesting someday to visit one that has been converted to another purpose.
I am guessing that S&I video store was possibly a Radio Shack at one time based on the design of the fixtures.

Why don’t these centres have a supermarket, greengrocer and butchers on site. How odd, no wonder there is nothing to draw crowds. Come to Australia to see how a shopping mall works. All are busy everyday, with any undertaking multi million dollar upgrades. This on top of online shopping which is also popular here.

Not Christmas lights. They are out of style decorations that malls used YEARS ago. This is a fairly accurate representation of the mall. I shop at the attached Target. The hope of the people on the Far Eastside is that the new owners put some effort into it and revitalize it. The next closest mall is some distance away. My one wish, if they bring it back to life, is to have a book store in it. I have to travel a very long distance to get to a chain bookstore. Right now, I'd be happy with a used bookstore, maybe a Half Price Books.

Grew up and live a mile away from Washington Square. I will say the Far East side of Indy is better than the near Eastside, but it was just a matter of time before this place went downhill with the violence spreading farther out. The neighborhoods are getting worse too. Used to be a relatively safe place to live. It’s a shame... The McDonald’s that used to be there was pretty rad though.

Just a quick note, I grew up here in Indianapolis and am stil here. When the mall was built, Lazarus was not part of the original opening of the mall and the structure had not been built yet to accommodate that store. It came about in the 1980’s and was later torn down in order to accommodate dicks sporting goods.

I used to go here with my dad all the time in the early 2000s. The way the mall has infilled with local shops might seem weird, but a lot of people in the community are really supportive of the idea. The issue of safety is far more perceived than it is real.

Once Eastgate demalled, there was Glendale (loved Glendale! So of course they demalled to. A lot of my formative years in the '90s happened at Washington Square. I was a church kid and used to be taken to the MCL cafeteria every Sunday afternoon. My first "real" job (not paid off the books construction) was at the Dollar Zone here in 1999 I believe it was. They had a Hot Topic and an EB Games. I used to go to the Disc Replay store in one of the strip malls in the parking lot to get used CDs and Games. The year before Sears closed we bought a washing machine there. When I was really little we'd shop at the anchor stores like L.S. Ayres, and a few times I got to go to the arcade and go-kart track across Washington street from the mall. Lots of memories, most of them very good.

Wait, so even if the mall gets a store that could successfully anchor it, the store can just close their mall entrance so it's not a mall store anymore? What would be so advantageous to a store that it wouldn't want at least the trickle of people coming in from the mall?

I heard that, at least in Target's case, it had to due with a dispute they had with Kohan.

SoCalWill Dicks sporting goods doesn’t have the staff to man the registers at mall entrance so they closed it off.

WSM UPDATE: Dick's Sporting Goods & Burlington have just announced the closure of their anchors. At the end of January, Target will be the only major anchor in the mall (though the mall entrance is closed so technically speaking, WS has no more anchors).

That song brings me back to my high school days in the 80s singing to Idol and other artists. That mall looks like it's stuck in the 80s and early 90s. Sad but the local businesses are helping.
Also maybe the future of the mall is turning it back to an outdoor mall. With Target and Dicks mall entrances closing that could be the solution. But they must keep Shirleys video store. People do collect those movies.

Grew up in that area in the '60s and '70s and what happened is that good-paying jobs like Ford International Harvester Chrysler and many others are gone. I was in town visiting and it's not the same anymore I don't think I will ever go back again.

I live just over an hour away..... we use to hit washington square but years ago (4ish) it started getting alot of kids walking around (14/18 year olds) , started feeling unsafe getting yelled at, fussed at,asked for money... police cars seemed like they were always arriving...
    I love burlington... btw
Target was nice their but still felt unsafe in parking lot during the evening..
The mall had a cute play area though...
Nice to see it's still open...but did they control kids hanging??

I was last in Washington Square in November of 2018 to visit Boss Battle Games, a retro arcade. They moved to the constantly busy Castleton Square Mall shortly after because Washington Square brought no business and the mall owners wouldn't let them expand into any of the empty units that made up the entire rest of the wing the arcade was in.

At 15:41, that asian restaurant is garbage. Overpriced everything. Rangoons were still frozen in the middle, the rice was mushy, the soda was flat and very syrupy.

You should go to Marion Indiana and check out 5 points mall. When I was a kid, it was a very busy place. Now they have a Rose's store, planet fitness, and Applebees. Last anybody heard it is going to be turned into a veterans college.

I used to take my nieces there because they were easily entertained by what looked like the saddest playground ever. Then I took them to Lafayette Square's and no, here was the saddest mall playground.

Durga owns two other notorious dead malls in Michigan: The Orchards in Benton Harbor and the former Cherryland Mall in Traverse City. Cherryland lost Sears, Kmart and Younkers (Bon Ton) in the past few years. The whole strip is pretty much a ghost town.

Just a thought. I wonder what happen to the Knoxville Center Mall because West Towne Mall also in Knoxville is thriving. My guess would be the loss of all of it's anchors. I haven't been there since 2006 and it was crowded and almost fully developed. With hardly any empty spaces. Enjoy your visit.
