In her latest video, Mother Jones video creator @katmabu traces the history of former President Donald Trump’s dangerous lie that some states allow parents to “execute” babies in so-called "post-birth abortions."
“You can look at the governor of West Virginia,” Trump said during last week’s debate, prompting an incredulous head shake from Vice President Kamala Harris. “He said the baby will be born and we will decide what to do with the baby. In other words, we'll execute it.”
Northam, of course, did not say that. Trump wasn’t even correct about his own right-wing smear. His reference was to a wildly out-of-context quote from former Virginia governor Ralph Northam (not West Virginia). Northam’s 2019 radio appearance, in which he explained the tragic medical emergencies that can result in late-term abortions, has since been selectively edited by Republicans and used to claim their opponents are permitting infanticide-a lie that has been repeated with relish across Fox News, again and again.
As Kat explains, “There’s no such thing as a 'post-birth' abortion. These procedures are extremely rare and reserved for cases where the mother’s life is in danger or when a fatally ill or deformed baby needs palliative care.” In this video, Kat shows how this wasn’t Trump’s first time exploiting these tragedies, which are “designed to demonize grieving mothers and doctors,” while clarifying the facts about late-term abortion care that are too often lost to political noise. She notes that less than one percent of abortions occur after 21 weeks of pregnancy.
“By limiting abortion access in the first place, whether it's totally or at the six-week mark, or by making parents jump through hoops just to get the medical care they need,” Kat explains, “Republicans are ensuring that there will be more cases that require traumatic medical intervention than if people were allowed to have control over their bodies in the first place.”

The BNP's vote almost doubled in the aftermath of that Question Time appearance, so I wouldn't exactly call that a triumph for liberal democracy. I think it was actually an early example of what we're seeing with Trump where it doesn't matter how much he's mocked and humiliated because he's appealing to a demographic who are so alienated from the political establishment / status quo that any criticism or attack on their totem merely reinforces their hostility. That's the problem with allowing fascists any kind of platform: they aren't liberals; they aren't playing the same game; they aren't subject to the same boundaries. You can't win arguments with fascists because fascists have no respect for any concept of "truth" or "reality": it's all just a means to attain power. Their whole essence is totally corrosive to democracy and I don't think merely "exposing" them helps. In reality, the exposure just gives them more power, as the spectacle of all of "respectable" mainstream politics uniting against them just increases their legitimacy in the eyes of the disenfranchised and alienated. Fascists have generally been pretty adept at using the non-rational cognitive biases and blind spots to their advantage: that's the core of their whole MO. Honestly, I think liberals just aren't equipped to deal with fascism. It's just flatly incompatible with all the Enlightenment principles and values. So I'll say again now what I said back then: NO PLATFORM FOR FASCISTS."

@ddub22 I don't believe everyone wanted Roe to go away. The Pro life wanted it changed because more than 60 million elective abortions have been done after Roe including about 60,000 elective abortions every year after 21 weeks some were done because planned parenthood misled women about the child.
There will always be elective abortions and there will always be people who protest that the killing of babies is ok!
Never would I ever think the sentence, "No, mothers are NOT executing their babies immediately after they are born" would genuinely be a sentence that would need to be said in 2024.

Some people never realize what the mother goes through. This is a heart breaking decision for the parents. The "Pro-Life" people do not seem to consider the life of the mother.
As it was stated, this was not a viable pregnancy, the baby would not survive anyway.
The trauma stays for a lifetime. It is never easy. Bless those that can go on with their lives after this.

The first time my wife was pregnant she had to have an “abortion” because our son didn’t develop kidneys. He would’ve died horribly within hours of being born. The so called abortion happened at the beginning of the 7th month. He was the saddest day of our lives. We have two grown boys now but we never forget the son that didn’t make it

It is sad that 400,000 dogs are euthanized each year. This doesn't compare to human abortion though. There are a million couples looking to adopt a human child, it is sometimes very hard to find someone to adopt the dog. I wish everyone would adopt and take care of dogs that need it. 1 Million human children are adopted, and 400,000 dogs are euthanized. It is all sad. Republicans shouldn't be laughing at dogs being killed and democrats shouldn't be laughing at humans being aborted.

There are approximately 391,000 children & young people in the foster care system in the U.S., that being said if there were “millions” wanting to adopt there are more than enough children/young adults in need of a parent/parents. The fact of the matter is that some potential parent(s) don’t want bi-racial, or handicapped or older children, they want the proverbial perfect “baby”. While there is nothing wrong with that because that’s their choice don’t equate a child/young adults needs with an animals - it’s vastly different & egregious to suggest as such. Also, you can't just adopt a child from the foster system, yes you can adopt them for the short term, but most children are in there because their parents have not been good parents for whatever reason...drugs for a lot of them. So, you can adopt a child, but have to give them up if the parent meets the criteria to get them back. This is very difficult to fall in love with a child only to have to give them up and maybe never see them again. This is why people want newborns.

In the early 1950s my mom lost her 3rd pregnancy in the final days before expected delivery. This was in Canada, but at that time abortion was illegal and the local hospital was Catholic run. They didn't do anything for her, for several days, eventually her body rejected it on it's own. She had mentioned about the horrible sight and smell from it, but also that she was sick for some time longer from blood poisoning. It could have killed her, she was "lucky" it didn't, she would have left her first 2 children without her. Liz Chaney is getting a bunch of praise for standing up to Trump, but she pushed these same lies, that made Trump possible.

It isn't legal, there was a bill passed recently that makes it criminal. The part republicans are talking about is that 210 democrats voted against making this criminal. Doesn't mean they want to make it legal, but I don't see a good reason that if you do perform an after birth abortion that it isn't criminal.

How little contact with any pregnant person do you have to have had to imagine that people are just deliberately getting pregnant and staying that way for almost nine months and then getting an abortion just for fun? It makes zero sense to assume that unless you've never known a single human being during the period when they are pregnant.
NO medical facility would EVER perform an abortion procedure involving a viable fetus and healthy mother, even if it's her choice. Limitations were always part of the post-Roe world.

Go to the Misedited video of Ralph Northam's comments and check the nature of the comments there. Those people are so wedded to the idea that its a slam dunk, proof that Northam is recommending the killing of children, when you point out the facts ie the federal law, that a child that is born has guaranteed rights that a state law can't override, the qualifying comments that Northam made that were edited out, the videos with the full comments, they accuse you blindness, as being led by the nose etc. Yes, it's extraordinary to see how they want to see evil in people they disagree with. Late term abortions with medical conditions that the baby will not survive are heartbreaking. I don’t think anyone is disagreeing with that. Testimonies of doctors having to abort babies for inconvenience, social or economic reasons is truly sad . Doctors have to make sure they have gotten 2 legs, 2 arms, the body, the head. God help us.
1) Sadly, the GOP has ginned up "late term abortion" so much - for political gain - that many of their voters DO agree with them. 2) The huge majority of abortions by choice are in the first 12 weeks and can be medical, not surgical. 3) In the Bible, abortion was allowed up to "quickening".

I think what people don’t understand is that yes if it’s something medical or life related then yes abortion should be considered alongside other things such as the fetus not developing or dying inside the uterus but why should the government decide when it should be the people and the states that decide
I’m glad that we are finally talking about this. The left has been really bad at communicating why abortions should be legal in the past. We can’t use talking points like “women should have a choice” and leaving it at that. Unfortunately we have to get graphic about what women go through that forces them to get an abortion.
It should also be stressed that exceptions are promised, but are jokes.
Like during a miscarriage, doctors won't help them, not until they're 'walking towards the light.' Or they decide a devastating miscarriage is murder.
The radio guy in Texas from recent news, wife miscarried, kept going to the ER and at one point he found her passed out in the bathroom floor, extreme blood loss, barely survived.
And the exceptions for rape/incest. 10-y-o girl raped by mom's boyfriend in Ohio, had to go to Indiana to get an abortion, and Indiana's AG went after the doctor. Ohio and the Indiana AG thought a raped 10-y-o should be forced to carry to term and give birth.
I held a friend’s hand during one of these procedures. Her daughter was born with a hole in the back of her head. In fact, it was the entire back of her head.
Republican extremists don’t even allow d&c’s for miscarriages or births with retained placenta (as I had with my first child). I was bleeding out (white as paper my husband told me) and my blood pressure took a special machine to find.

he was asked if he supported Kathy Tran's measures on 3rd trimester abortions, in which she said an abortion on a woman dilating would not be permitted. He said that it's an option that should be discussed even after the child is born. There was no nothing about extreme circumstances mentioned in the question posed to him.
Just drink the damn kool aide and let's move on.

Im still trying to understand exactly what the governor was saying. Was he referring to an abortion immediately before delivery and the baby somehow survived initially and was born alive? Or was he referring to a terminally ill baby born alive and then a decision whether to give care to it.
The author made a determined effort to say what he “wasn’t saying “ meaning a murder of a live baby. But I’m still not sure what what exactly he was saying
IF the fetus is at the age of viability (weight, etc.) but labor is induced because of the health of the mother or fetus, two things will happen: 1) The fetus now baby will be treated as a patient and if non-viable (e.g. no brain or other organs) will be allowed to die in the arms of the parents. 2) The fetus now baby if viable will be given every reasonable standard of care. It is NOT complicated. Drs. are not monsters.
