Incredible video. I was lucky enough to visit Lapland in November 2021, and was extra lucky enough to glimpse a white hare in the snowless forest while hiking outside Rovaniemi. I later went north to Kilpisjärvi where I was surprised to have temperatures above 5ºC and I snowshoed in a T-shirt. Our winters are changing, I've seen it in the shorter ski seasons and fewer snow storms here on the US east coast. Just five years ago it was colder and snowier. Keep up the good work!

Gorgeous 😍. My favourite activity is hiking up snow-covered mountains. Its so beautiful and peaceful.......and laborious. The music and the scenery gives me goosebumps.

Only one correction! The culture of spending a night in a cave of snow is alive and well in Finland. :) For many scouts and hikers it's an annual thing to do.

Thanks Emma! That's a good point and I have thought about the conflict of this line afterwords. It would have been wiser to say that the snow conditions in my locations wasn't favorable for a snow cave. In an emergency situation of losing my tent it would have been wisest to sleep in my sledge (ahkio) since I easily fit in there.

ensinnäkin, mahtavaa sisältöä, päävideo jätti täysin sanattomaksi! Toiseksi kysymys: minkälaisella suksella liikut tuolla metsissä? Hiihtovaellus kiinnostelee hieman
Kiitos Otto! Mulla oli käytössä OAC XCD GT UC 160 -sukset. Sydäntalven aikaan olisi miltei parempi käyttää pitkiä metsäsuksia (2-3m) upottavan lumen aikaan. Mettäsukset kantaa hieman paremmin ja tärkeimmiten niiden kärki "pyrkii" aina lumen pinnalla upottavassa lumessa vs. OACeilla pääsee välillä raskaasti nostamaan suksea lumen alta.
Omistin kuitenkin entuudestaan jo OACit ja mulla oli tiedossa useampia nousuja tunturiin ahkion kanssa, niin mäissä hieman lyhyempi suksi oli mukavampi. Muutenkin mun kokoon (170cm) 160cm sukset ei ole auttamattoman lyhyet ja on paljon ketterämmät kulkea kuin kolmen metrin lankut.
Kovemmalla tuulen kovettamalla pinnalla kannattaa suosia tunturisuksia.

on totta, talvet myöhästyvät paljon ja järjestelmä ei pysy sen mukana, valkoisia kaneja syksyisessä metsässä, melko vaikuttava klippi. mutta ilmastonmuutos sellaisenaan ei ole sen kummempi kuin luonnollinen ilmiö, vaikkakin sitä voi ihminen vauhdittaa, se tulisi tapahtumaan joka tapauksessa. me olemme nyt ihmiskuntana uudenlaisessa tilanteessa, jossa me näemme tämän muutoksen omin silmin. vaikka me tehtäisiin mitä, ei se enää pysähdy, pallomme tekee uusiutumisensa ja meidän ei auta muuta kuin pitää lujasti kiinni, vauhti vain kiihtyy.
Kyllä mainitsemasi ihmisen nopeuttama ilmastonmuutos poikkeaa todella paljon luonnollisesta ilmastonmuutoksesta. Muutoksen nopeus on suurin ero. Muulla elonkirjolla tahtoo olla miltei mahdotonta pysyä muutoksessa mukana evolutiivisesti sopeutumalla. Luonnollisessa ilmastonmuutoksessa myöskään ei kaikki keri sopeutua, mutta nykyiseltään muutoksen nopeus on silti aivan omaa luokkaa.
@@RikuKarjalainenPhotography mikään toimi, ei tätä koneistoa enää pysäytä tai edes hidasta. Nyt pitää sopeutua, ei radikalisoitua.
@@survivor303 Ei ainakaan tolla asenteella. Sopeutumisen ei tulisi tarkoittaa, että jatketaan nykystä menoa business as usual. Radikalisoituminen = elinkelpoisen tulevaisuuden tavoittelu?
@@RikuKarjalainenPhotography elinkelpoista ei ole esimerkiksi se, että viljelijöitä estetään tekemään meille, että muille eläimille ruokaa. Sähkö ei tule vain seinästä, sähköauto ei ole elinkelpoinen, siellä mistä sen komponentit tulevat. Ihminen on resursseja kuluttava laji. toki voimme päätyä kaikki takaisin luolaan, tosin kylmään koska ilmeisesti myös puun käyttö nuotion tekemiseksi, olisi pahinta.
@@survivor303 Kyllä, populaa on yli tämän pallon kantokyvyn. Rikkain väestö on tosin vastuussa suurimmasta osasta historiallisista päästöistä ja myöskin tänä päivänä, joten vastuuta ei voi vain vierittää väestönpaljouden piikkiin. Fossiilista luopuminen on kaiketi avainasemassa. Vastauksessasi vedetään nyt mutkat suoriksi parin löyhän esimerkin keinoin.

On the technique - how did you film the rapidly thawing snow may I ask? There`s no flicker, which you would normally get over a long period of time shooting ie in changing lighting conditions.
Thanks! I filmed the melting snow scenes for about 2 - 3,5 weeks. I had four separate tripod heads tied in trees in a forest nearby me. I visited the location every day during sunset (on warmer days, 2-3 times per day) because the light conditions are quite similar at sunset in forest, cloudy or clear sky. I always took one shot per my visit. The final results was about 1-2 seconds which I slowed down several times resulting in around 20s clip, which I speeded up again around to 4-5s. Because of the slow mo, I had introduced more artificially made frames and motion blur, which made the end result quite a lot smoother compared the original frames.
There was some flicker in the original frames, which I removed by matching the images visually in Lightroom (RAW to TIFF export) and I used Deflicker plugin in After Effects. Also, I had to remove camera shake manually and then by warp stabilizer. I never left my cameras in forest, so there's was a tiny shake always when I set the camera in the tripod head.

At say 24fps for 2 seconds, you must have gone to the same scene nearly fifty times, have I understood that right? How far away were you staying? That is incredible dedication even if you were overnighting just down the road
@@alpinewonders No worries! Yes, you understood right. I visited the same location around 40 times. Back then I did live in Rovaniemi, Finland. I reached the location by bicycle (4 km journey from my home back then into forest) and walked the remaining hundred meters. Honestly it was quite fun to be forced to reach the destination every day during sunset! I started filming when sun set around 9PM and continued until 11:30PM, almost until nightless night. I might do a video some day on the BTS of these shots :)
Kiinnostaisi kuulla kokeneemman kuvailijan metodeista kameroiden suhteen. Itsellä Sony A7S2, ja vaikka olen kuullu että kyllä nuo pakkasta kestää senverran mitä mieskin, niin jotain kikkoja varmaan löytyy esim jos vie kameraa 35 pakkasesta lämpimään kämppään ja toisinpäin?
Mulla oli kuvauskalusto aina ulkona pakkasessa ja vältin parhaan mukaan lämpötilaeroja, joten kalusto ei tullut ikinä teltan sisään. Käytin Sonyn Alpha -kameroissani dummy-akkua ja virtalähteenä toimi V-lock/V-mount akut, jotka kestää pakkasta todella hyvin. Mulla tärkeintä V-lock akkujen käytössä oli, että pystyin antamaan samasta akusta virtaa 1) kameraan, 2) linssin lämmittimeen ja 3) eMotimo ST4 robottipäähän + slideriin. Kun tietää, että akku on täynnä, niin ei oo mitään huolta, että yksikään akku loppuisi --> ja kaikki menis mönkään. Ennen V-lock akkujen käyttöä oli kyllä kauhia työmää pitää lämpimänä useita eri akkuja ja epäonnistumisia tuli usein. Nyt ei ikinä mennyt mönkään kuvaamiset pakkasen takia.

@@AlbertKarhuFilms Mun tapauksessa on pelittänyt! Kameran käyttöjärjestelmä hieman hidastuu, mutta ei muuta ongelmaa. Käytän itse adapterilla Canonin linssejä Sonyssä ja sen toiminta on saattanu takkuilla pakkasessa. Teipin pala adapterin ja rungon väliin on auttanut tähän ongelmaan kuitenkin.
So it is the winter we know and still have - and we can still enjoy it and even film it. More than great video and shots. not so much the message in my opinion
