Honestly, i started with this 6 mo ago, and then bought the one similar to it with a handle. Now, im spending 1500 on the hand crank!! its much easier and quick. It doesnt wrinkle the leather and u dont have to fight to pull it through. 😊
Hi Tim. Most of the videos I watch are a bit intimidating to the beginner because these crafters are super talented. I thought there must be some struggling beginners out there that need to know they aren't alone. Good luck in your leather journey. Last Christmas I got my first tools and started this hobby.. Looks like a nice basic sturdy low tech device. I’ve been thinking about getting one like this and although your demonstration is great I think I’ve now landed on not getting one. First of all my hand skiving technique has improved a good deal from struggling with it for a while and I would love to develop it further. Secondly I don’t have a workshop and my life would come to a swift and painful end if I were to screw this into the teakwood dining room table. 😂
Haha, definitely don't mar that teakwood table. That's awesome your improving with your hand skiving. I find it one of my toughest challenges. Practice makes perfect, right? Thanks for watching the video and best of luck with your leathercraft.
That's a good idea! I almost want to get a second one so I can leave one set up for belts. When I change it I need to run some scrap to find my spot again.
Just a side note to make it a little easier try polishing the blade on a strop with green compound even if blade is brand new polishing makes it glide more friction free
I plan on getting one soon. Is it possible to put a link as to how you found this one with the roller bearings this looks like it will slide a lot smoother. And really informative video keep up the A+ work…
it's a MXBAOHENGus Instrument Co. , Leather Skiver Splitter from Amazon. Put that in the search and it should come up. I've only used it on a handful of belt straps and it's worked good so far. Not sure how long it will last being made overseas. For the light work I do, I think I'll be okay. Thanks for watching!
It actually splits the leather will a blade rather than grinding. I've only used it to skive my belts at the folded area rather than skiving by hand. it's worked well on my bridle like in the video. I haven't used it for anything else.

I’d have to stick a label on the top to show which way to turn the screws to enlarge/ reduce the cut. I’d be bound to forget!

Your leather may skive easier when cased, or damp...YMMV. for sure it will fold with less chance of cracking on the grain side.

You know those Amazon packages have a pull tab to easily open those bags right?! No need to use scissors or a knife to open them.
