You are asking all the same questions I think that we all ask at some point. Having just had hundreds of dollars delivered to my door a couple days ago and living on social security the challenges become greater. In the old days we could make checkbook covers and make a few dollars. But who uses checks anymore? Belts? Dress belts do require a lot of stitching and it takes time. Who wants to pay 50 or 100 dollars for something they can get for $20 at Walmart? But, I watched this guy on UA-cam that makes desks. Desks? Something I can get for a couple hundred dollars at ikea? Well, he makes desks that sell for around 10 grand. My thought is this, become proficient at one or two items that every business man needs and test the waters. Make it and give it to someone that will use it on a daily basis and ask what can be improved? If it breaks, what broke and how can it be reinforced? Yes it’s a gamble. But wealthy people like nice things that last a lifetime. Something to think about. As for your photography issues? There are easy fixes to that too. A quality light meter, a good tripod, a basic understanding of aperture depth of field and an understanding of the white balance setting and you’re good to go. If you have any questions on the photo aspect just send me a reply, I’d be more than happy to help.
@@rickperkins7929 You make great points. I have been considering only focusing on a couple of items that are similar in nature. Again, you are right. There are people that would rather spend the money on one quality item than rebuying the same cheap priced item over and over. Many years ago I had an entire manual camera with a couple of lenses and a darkroom for developing black and white photos. I really need to brush up on that. I tend to try to do too many things at the same time and stretch myself thin. I’m now retired and wonder how I did all this while I worked 40+ hours/week! We will figure it out and do the best we can, right? I wish you happy holidays this coming week and appreciate chatting with you. Take care.

@@RudyBaca-d8x Thank you for the nice words. I enjoy the hand stitching and for the small items it’s great. Doing a large bag, for example, is rewarding but you would be hard pressed to make a decent hourly rate if trying to sell it. Most likely the price would be too high. Good luck with your craft and it’s nice to make items for others. Nothing better than a hand made gift.

Can confirm. I got into sewing/leather crafting because I couldn't find clothing/gear that matched what I wanted in terms of style(historical/fantasy). I've made some stuff that did function in cold weather, but since I'm self taught, there were some oversights with valuable lessons.
@ Definitely a large learning curve in leather crafting! I heard others talk about not finding what they needed so they decided to make it.

@@michaelgovea8299 leatherstampmaker.com
Looks like a custom stamp from Leather stamp maker
@@michaelgovea8299 sorry for the delay. I thought I answered after I checked the business card. “Leather Stamp Maker”.
@@Tx_rickjames You are right! Thanks for the comment. I thought I had answered that one but must have missed it. Good eye.
@@brillonleather thank you!
If you are tying a knot when you thread your needle, that's the whole problem pulling it through. That's not how you thread a needle. You feed it through the eye and "secure" it when you put the needle through the middle of the thread and slide it over the eye.
I do pierce the thread in the center and slide up. There's no knot. I have weak wrists from years of physical work. I can't even open a jar cover without some type of assistance tool. The thread I was using was 1.00mm and when it gets to the backstich, the hole has quite a bit of thread in there making it tough to pull that slippery needle. Hence, the pliers. Good reason to get that sewing machine, right? Thanks for watching and suggestions are always helpful.
Understandable frustration. I generally find it's the imbalance of pull pressure and interruption of rhythm that creates such inconsistencies. Some of the ways I've overcome this imbalance has been to lower my thread count to .8mm and alter in my stitching methodology. It's a bit unorthodox but Try this: Insert both needles through the hole (right needle high and Left needle low), wrap the thread around the back needle then tug both needles through with pliers BEFORE following through. This eliminates the struggle, allows you to equalize the pull pressure and keep stitch lines even. Give it a test run and see if it works for you. It worked wonderfully for me both on the pony and free hand. Big Tip: Manage that pull pressure. If the leather is 'puckering' your pull pressure is too high. It happened to me quite a bit while drinking coffee (too much caffeine 🙄.) Phil from Leatherclass Masterclass gave me that helpful tip. A good guy. Hope this helps. Cheers!🥃 ~Alan Eldritch ⚡ Premium Executive Products Ann Arbor Mi.
@@pepleatherlab3872 I’ll give it a try. I have watched several videos by Phil. He definitely pays attention to detail and does great work. Thanks for the advice.
its a learning phase my friend. even saddle stitching takes some practice. you may want to go with a smaller thread size like a 8 or 6 millimeter so you dont have to pull your thread with some pliers. also glue some leather on your pony stitch jaws which helps not to mar up your leather. hope this helps out. Keep leather crafting brother!

Taking us back in time to the early AD&D days Randy. Ever checkout the Wyrmwood site? They got dice towers in rare woods that are interesting. Dice tray looks good. Maybe some tooling and could sell trays and bags at the Renaissance festival every year. What I did for my pony is to attach tooling leather onto each clamp with rubber bands. I suppose I'll eventually glue them onto the wood and be done with it. Cheers! 🥃
@@pepleatherlab3872 Simple games are fun sometimes. No stress! I would like to do so stamping on those trays. More time available soon when the weather cools off. I’m going to check out that site.
I must've missed this one months ago. Caught it now. Agree on the oil/Chrome tan leather. Liquored leather never burnishes properly and requires edge coat to finish (acrylics.) It's all that oil, fat and wax saturation that resists friction by design. I always found the shell cordovan too bulky to create 'full' wallets with and tend to utilize 1 oz alternatives on the interior card battery. It will burnish like a dream and patina well with natural or light colors. I too prefer slim profile wallets and also created one for myself. Mine is a seven component minimalist with a depressed side zipper. 3 card slots, 2 hidden cash sleeves, and one side zip pouch. I call it the '321 Work EDC' and been selling hundreds of them at Etsy. Apparently more people than myself like it. 🙂👍🏽 Your gusseted snap wallet came out nice. Cheers BL! 🥃
Sounds like great wallet! Congrats on the sales. Do you do all your selling on the Etsy platform? I'm still stuck on , going forward, d/b/a or LLC. Also the hand-stitch or machine dilemma.
@@brillonleather I think a strong market remains for handstitched products. If I were going to compromise it would likely be for low stress interior segments like zippers, card slot bottoms and lining reinforcement. There's also a lot to be said for projects with so much stitching, doing it by hand is a time killer and doesn't pay (Bags and belts.) Machine stitch where time and product stress are minimal. Handstitch high stress areas where longevity matters. 👍🏽
@@pepleatherlab3872 agreed. Do you own a sewing machine? What do you recommend? I’m partial to the Cobra 26 and the Juki 4800.
@@brillonleather Both of those would do the job. My inclination for similarly priced machines is always toward the one with better customer service. Whatever machine you choose, there will come a time when you'll require support of some kind. Especially if you ramp up production. 👍🏽

Had to dig up some old receipts. This material is called "Saffiano Leather". ??? I need to do some research on this one. Let me know if you know anything about this material and what it would be used for.
Looks like black Saffiano in hatch grain. It's very popular in women's designer bags. I think it may be because the complex hatch grain conceals a lot of punishment. I haven't used it (yet.) When I do it'll like be applied in high wear zones on a product (handles and bag bottoms.) My usual method for determining if a hide is natural is to flip it over and look for stretch wrinkles. U live up that way, ill be coming that way last if the week, bird hunting in northern maine..long drive from Va.
@@johnearhart8811 we are in Mass. stayed in Conway NH area and took a ride up to Rangeley Park in Maine. We’ve been a few times for the fall color. Definitely a long ride from Va.
I enjoy your videos I feel that connection that u speak of , repetition is what has made the time speed and making say 5 card wallets at a time and get everything do e in steps . I hope the li is help u also "Made on Jupiter" has alot of nice tools and hardware /quality
@@livwyr1967 Thank you for your comment. Once I narrow down what items I am going to make, hopefully I can minimize time by making multiple pieces at the same time. I have bought from Made on Jupiter and was happy with everything. I appreciate any ideas and tips you can share.
I went the other way. I ran a fairly successful side hustle sewing for about 20 years. It's been relegated to hobby status, personal projects, some costuming for others and occasional development work for hire. But I'm being bitten by the bug again to make it a little bit more. Working on some ideas and planning participate in some of our local artist markets to keep the interest up and participate in community.
@@BlueSkyScholar when you get the itch it’s hard to to not keep at it. Especially after so many years. Those sound like great future ideas. Keep me posted with what you decide down the road. What part of the country are you located. We are taking a couple of days in NH so of course I had to find a leather store. They showed me their work shop. What a great work space they have.
Have you thought of Bible/book covers or rebinding? Perhaps you could do a video on different types of leather and what to look for when buying.
@@michaelhutin5451 Great ideas. Thank you for that!
