  • In this video, May Beaubrun, a board-certified behavior analyst with Brett DiNovi & Associates, provides an in-depth exploration of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). PDA is characterized by an extreme drive for autonomy, where individuals, particularly those on the autism spectrum, go to great lengths to avoid or resist demands.
    Key points covered include:
Definition and Characteristics: Understanding PDA as a pervasive drive for autonomy and its distinction from typical behavior in children.
Connection to Autism: Exploring why PDA is often seen in individuals on the autism spectrum and how their inflexibility and social challenges contribute to this behavior.
Diagnosis: The role of healthcare professionals, such as pediatricians and child psychologists, in diagnosing PDA.
Impact on Daily Life: How PDA affects functioning at home and school, with examples of avoidance behaviors and their impact on tasks and routines.
Behavioral Responses: Common avoidance strategies used by individuals with PDA, such as making excuses, diverting attention, or having tantrums.
Management Strategies: Emphasizing the importance of motivation over forced compliance and discussing ABA-based interventions like functional communication responses, positive behavior supports, and social skills instruction.
This video aims to shed light on the complexities of PDA and offers insights into potential strategies for supporting individuals with this condition.

I don’t lack the social cues of accepted behavior. If i did then where would the demand avoidance come into play?
