Because Karen is a better dancer and she looks more like Marilyn/Norma Jeane than Ivy is.

Karen was a great Norma Jean and Ivy was a great stereotypical version of Marlyn, but for the musical to work they needed a real Marilyn, not this over sexualized caricature

While I do prefer Ivy's performance, Ivy was really bitchy to Karen once Derek started to have Karen coach her. Honestly Karen was a good sport about it though

According to Tom, him and Derek did a show that got slammed by critics and Derek apparently told every producer in every theater that Tom was insane and overrated talent wise and not a great artist (Derek denies doing this). Additionally, Tom said the only reason why Derek didn’t get burned in the review was because his dad was sleeping with the male critic. Male critic being important here because iirc Tom only brought this up because Derek said something homophobic or something about how Marilyn was a drug addicted egomaniac and not this gay male fantasy of a poor victim
