    I went here with my family in the 80s & 90s. I remember Rainbow Mountain & Barracuda Bay well! The final drop on Floodgate Falls was the best!

    They retired the Giant Wheel so now you can no longer get a great relaxing view of the old water slide mountain and other areas of the park. Too many great rides replaced by lame rides. Used to be so much fun. Cascade Canyon and Floodgate Falls were always my favorites.

    I at first thought this was going to be about the old camp ground pool that was filled in with stone and the Moto Coaster now sits in top of. The depth markers are still in the concrete.

      It was. I miss being a kid and spending a few hours hitting up the mat slides and then going to hooks. The water park now is just in a weird area imo and all crammed together. It helped with lines on hot days too. Most stuff was walk on

    I remember going to Darien Lake in 2017 and seeing an empty hill and I'm like, "I swear there were slides here once lol." I also remember the lazy river being painful and getting scraped like hell.

  • @markvolpe2305
    @markvolpe2305 3 роки тому +4

    From what I was told is that why they never removed Floodgate Falls (a very painful ride from what I remember) because that ride is holding that whole hill together, if they remove it, the soil may start collapsing.

      yesssss!! you right it was painful!! the one drop where someone would help push you over, i couldn’t have been older than 7 at the time, if not younger and too this day years later i remember smashing my bottom on it! the guy even mentions the part of someone helping you over the hill

      This was my hunch! Ive been looking for history on Darien Lake on google and cant find much of what it was before 1954 other than it was a local swimming pond that got excavated and filled. Knowing the history of Syracuse where im from, anytime something is excavated and filled and covered with concrete…its usually a toxic waste cleanup site (state fairgrounds, carousel mall, syracuse ampitheatre). If its true that its holding the hill together, it could be leaching toxic waste into the water rides or they ran into problems with the waste when installing it, which means theyll have to dig up waste to remove it and thats expensive. Probably why theres no rides there either. Darien lake had two coasters in storage for years i believe and had the space to build but never did. They had the money to reprganize and repaint though. Conversely it couldve just been a bad ride, and they need to source the water to one spot so it got left behind. Who knows maybe they will put something there

    Always look at it from the top of the giant wheel and am wondering why they don't put a new ride there. An S&S freespin will easily fit here. Or could become back to a version of Barracuda Bay once again!

    My family use to rent a camper at Darien in the 90s and 00s. I loved barracuda bay and sad to see it go. But I’m happy with the upgraded water park. I wish Darien would do something with that land though. My roller coaster tycoon brain is going crazy! I keep thinking how that hill could be a great hill and drop? Hopefully they put some use to it soon!

    Mind you, I went down it twice after that, but that was only because that stupid raft was SO heavy and you had to carry it up each time.

    Great job and awesome videos. Keep up the terrific work. I was a Geauga Lake Park employee and Darien Lake was part of Funtime, Inc. They maintained that park and Geauga Lake Park and smaller Wyandot Lake in Columbus. They were fantastic people to work for, and they, I feel took good care of Darien Lake until Premier Parks came in and started fucking everything up.

    This is one of the more unique stories I’ve heard in terms of abandoned water slides. It’s amazing that they removed that many water slides out of an area over time and not all at once to be replaced. Must be the lack of direction with ownership changes!
