They should've been. But it wasn't really a matter of skill. He got the drop on the and had them at sword point whilst they were unarmed and off guard in addition he was also threatening kai and nya. So it's not like they weren't skilled enough just due to circumstances they couldn't fight back

i think that kais line of "are we destined to become evil too" is something that can be also related to cycles of abuse? a lot of people who had abusive in any way shape or form parents have a worry that if they ever have kids/become parents that theyll be like their parents, that theyre "destined to be evil" not entirely comparable but it adds more reason as to why kai would worry about that
I'll never know why, but the reprisal of Jay's "who ate my pudding cup?" gag from Rebooted legit made me bust out laughing the first time I watched this season.
The reason Ray and Maya didn’t use their powers to defend themselves against Krux is likely because they passed on their elemental powers to Kai and Nya.
Considering that Ray was still able to spar with Kai in seabound, and Maya could still fight too, which was much later, i refuse to believe the the 2 of them couldn't have went and got weapons to fight Krux.
I will never understand people who say it's the bad season. What that season doesn't have that every other had? It has our favourite characters, villains, plot, intro, battles, finale. There's no any little thing that is worse than any other season. I watch this season just like I watch fan-favourite seasons (S4,5,8). There's no difference, nowhere. Animations and dialogues are also argueable, I don't see problems, that doesn't mean problems of animation don't exist, but they are really not that obvious like ninjago fans shout out to be. And dialogues, what is wrong with them? They are normal and usual like any other season, I don't see problems with dialogues. Many things are so hated in this season for no reason and people seem to overlook every single detail just to say "this is so so bad". I will never understand that hate. S7 is a normal and good season just like any other, it could be worse than some seasons, it could be better than some seasons, but it's DEFINITELY NOT BAD
slow pacing, bad writing, filler episodes, inconsistent characters - Like crusty said 8 episodes would have been a perfect length - Lloyd goes from being a competent leader to someone losing confidence in themself - The pacing in the middle sucks - if the middle was as good as the first and last episode it would be a really good season It's by no means terrible, just kind of average/low quality.
@@theAstarrr I don't see any issues with the pacing of the show, or bad writing. There weren't any episodes that were solely filler, just had filler parts of the episode. And inconsistent characters would be a fair critique, if Ninjago had consistent characters to begin with, Name a single character that hasn't been inconsistent without the show explaining why
I feel like they couldv'e had Krux kidnap Ray and Maya using some tea or whatever to make them go unconscious and then having Ray and Maya wake up in his underground layer and having no choice but to work for him.
Yeah, my headcanon rewrite is that Krux as Dr. Santez (apologizes, if the spelling of the names is wrong) was visiting Ray and Maya for them to make "authentic replicas" of armor pieces, weapons and so on for the museum and while having discussions he's serving them a tea with poison which effects are slowly showing so it looks like they'd just got some sickness. Plotwist, the children are affected too. So when it comes to reveal of Krux's true identity, Ray and Maya are given a choice. Come with Krux and he gives them enough antidote just to cure their children so they can't cross him or they all die... Yeah, I know it's dark but I really like it.
Hands of time was the second Ninjago season I’ve watched fully. I’ll admit it’s plot made me feel sleepy at some points, but I liked the flashback action of the Old Wars. I didn’t know it was that widely hated though
if Machia wasn't killed, she would have power to control Iron Doom too. Iron Doom is working and moving on the fact that snakes of Vermillions move its certain parts, so that is why Krux and Acronix could control it so easily the same way as Blunck, Raggmunk and Machia did. so letting her alive would basically give another person control, and she could try to betray them and ruin everything and etc.
Personally I’ve never hated hands of time. It’s far from my favorite season and I do think it’s the most forgettable season but I don’t think it’s terrible. Especially after the complete train wreck that was crystallized
On the one hand, Skybound had a pretty egregious problem where once one character learned a piece of info all of them suddenly know it, even ones who couldn't possibly know it. But on the other hand, having the same exposition dump two or three times for multiple plot beats in Hands of Time becomes annoying really fast.
16:09 Don't forget that Kai also was exposed to his dark side duuring season 4, and while he was influenced by that magic staff I think that things he said geniuenlly were in the back of his mind even if he tries to be a bigger person, personally I wouldn't mind exploring it even more bc I do miss old Kai ( and Jay but that's besides the point) that felt like an atcuall protagonist material instead of this half baked version we have in new seasons
Crystallized is terrible, but to say that every other season is crazy. Especially, when a large bulk of seasons we got after season 8 were absolutely dreadful
I honestly wish David Shayne was kept on as a writer for a couple more seasons, he really had potential as a great writer since the stuff he wrote in HoT was sometimes genuinely brilliant. I enjoy HoT more than others but it 100% has it's flaws. Great video man, just found your channel yesterday and you make great stuff.
This season is like Horton Hears a Who for me. I remember liking both when I was little and didn't have hindsight but look at them now and see how they didn't particularly age well.
I'm currently showing my GF this show, (And she LOVES it so far. She's on Prime Empire) and we both definitely agree that Ray and Maya being good all along, was a bad twist. A twist that harmed Kai's character in the long run of the show. And a twist, that had it not existed, the story would've been more compelling. Imagine an alternate version of the show where Ray and Maya WERE these actual malicious traitors who joined the Time Twins at their own free will. People who thought there would be no consequences to abandoning their kids when the time machine was made. Then they could just go back in time and be parents, with their powers back and able to raise perfect little elemental masters. (Like, maybe they lost their powers making the time blades or something, and they clung to the past and felt powerless without that) Imagine what that would do to Kai, who is all about upholding the honor his parents' 'legacy'. He's always wanted to do what they did and do it better. But what if they ended up being these bad role models? What if he was clinging to the past and what happened as a consequence to his parents abandoning him and Nya, and he had to learn a lesson that the past doesn't matter, and what he should focus on is who he wants to be now. Imagine if the parents tried to play the 'you don't want to fight against your family' card, and their kids said back 'I have a family, it's the ninja'. Imagine if Ray and Maya were thrown in prison, and the Wildbrain era's follow up of them is a redemption arc where they try to be better parents, and Kai and Nya aren't fond of letting them in their lives. My gosh, the compelling character work and drama there. Having the parents be good all along not only harms the season's narrative that was built up to, but takes established trauma of your main characters away from them, without them ever working it out on their own. Again, if the parents weren't good, they'd have to work their trauma out on their own, which would've been neat to see.
Actually Iron Doom gains sentience because snakes that made up Machia, Blank and Ruggmank (however you spell it) entered it, so that’s why Hands do Time destroyed them
A positive for this season is how determined the villains are to win they always send the vermillion to constantly try and get the time blades which I personally like
I know I'm late to the comments section, but interestingly enough, I actually learned that Dr. Saunders was Krux through the actually LEGO sets. The Iron Doom was the first Hands Of Time set I got, and I saw Dr. Saunders' face on the back of Krux' minifigure head. I was confused at first, but then I put two and two together, so that's how it was revealed to me.
what about how the green ninja with years of experience turned his back on the enemy and held the time blades IN THE AIR SHAKING THEM then once they where taken the ninja just stood there instead of fighting back
I never understood why this season was so bad. It was great, and doesn't scream "the franchise is beginning to decline" compared to stuff like The Island.
The parents being traitors by choice would have been such a good thing for the story. Why the elemental masters could have just disagreed with the king, wu and Garmadon and thought they were better off alone? What if the reason they disappeared was because they were wanted as traitors? What if Crux manipulated them because of this? The fight between Ray and Kay would have hold a bigger weight since not only they were father and son, but they were holding different ideologies. And this connect to season 8 where the called out the ninja for not being perfect, same old elemental masters weren't supposed to be all "good". Wasted potential
i agree on the kidnapping, crux couldve had some of the vermillion with him, maybe not fully equipped but we know crux has been laying this plan out for 40 years so he wouldve had a few vermillion with him, just to add a layer of threat, or maybe even a fight scene, the flashback was way too rushed tbf

Anyone can say what they want about Hands of Time. When I came across this series, I was quite interested in it’s ending (especially the Time Blades themselves). When Wu was lost in Time and the Samurai X identity (who is PIZXAL) was left unknown, I would always look up Ninjago Season, anticipating for the next season. This is what got me to be interested into Ninjago itself. It also got me to go back and watch the other seasons online, Day of the Departed included. People can say what they like about season 7, but I will be referring to it as, “The Season which would bring us into what we would know only to be, The Oni Trilogy”.
one of the things i love about "the attack" is the scene early in the episode with krux, acronix, blunc and raggmunc arguing about the stolen timeblade. say what you want about the comedy in this season, but this is one of the times ninjago made laugh out loud, it's very silly. blunc and raggmunc aren't very good comic relief villains but this scene is that one time i appreciate them as such :-)
Hands of Time has never been unanimously the most hated season. It’s just the season that people like to hate on because they are scared to criticize earlier seasons (i.e. season 3) or later seasons (i.e. season 11).

When I was younger, our neighbor was taking care of me and my sister because our parents were one a trip or something. we got season 7 at the library and watched the whole season in one day. Yep, the LEGO Ninjago Movie was one of the factors to on why Hands of Time wasn’t was made this good. The things you’ve listed out were the known factors of how the season failed (but the movie failed as well, basically a lose-lose situation). As for Maya looking younger, there isn’t a technical reason to why was it changed to make her look younger (maybe poor choices of design?). But, according to Tommy Andreason, he explained that “the truth is we had to match the head in the show with the one the toy designers had available to the because Maya would be a figure. She is not younger in the show, just may look younger to some." Which I find to be a stupid reason that they couldn’t produce a different face that matches with how Maya should look. Hope this information helps!
unlike a lot of ninjago seasons, season 7 doesn't struggle with baffling writing decisions, one bad episode or missed potential, it instead struggles with problems that linger throughout the entire season like bad attempts at being funny, horrible dialogue and being too long. The exception to this is the reveal of kai and nya's parents (the flashback to be specific) which is a baffling writing decision.

I think that the line in the sand and the attack are some of the best episodes of this season and my brother and I put "the line in the sand" at the top of our tier list about this season, and we placed the "attack" in the top 5 episodes of this season, of course, I have some problems with it such as the bad animation and some plot issues, but it's still a better episode than "the attack" from lab rats elite force
funnily enough I think Hands of Time is one of my favorite seasons (not one i think is best in quality), yeah there are problems, but the story is very cool and I loved Kai and Nya's interactions, and the time twins were very cool and a big threat when they were at full power. I didn't even know people hated hands of time so much, I loved it, yeah the dialog was weird, the animation did kinda fall off, and there were some plot holes but i still loved it. The worst season is definitely either Chrystalized or season 3.
Both of these season is more interesting than hands of time both of them has great movement like Zane death and wy vs the overlord which was peak of crystallized season 7 didn't have any of that i am not saving that they are great especially with how crystallized ended

Hands of time was always the season that i keep forgetting even existed in the first place. Its propably because my Ninjago phase ended with Skybound, but even when i went and rewatched Ninjago in 2019 i now realized i still actually barely remember this season lol What i remember is that i just kinda enjoyed it but i definetly could feel like this season broke the godlike streak Ninjago had going since Rebooted. 2014-2016 was the best era for Ninjago since the seasons that came out in that time were peak Ninjago content. It just didnt feel like its on the same level anymore. Sons of Garmadon went back to being peak tho, ngl.
Did anyone else notice in “Secrets Discovered” that when Kai discovered the hatch in the museum when he discovered that his father was working for Acronix and Krux. There was a fire nation and water tribe symbol from avatar the last airbender in the hatch
Man I hate when writers give the villains a super op power that can destroy the heroes with ease but then they make them super dumb. I hate this trope.
The fight with acronix in the 1st episode and the fight of a time of traitors, along with the better aspects of the season made me rank hands of time quite high for a while. But then Blunk and Raggmunk made it lose more and more positions over time. I generally think hands of time has a good start and a good ending, but a bad middle

It certainly has issues but I've always loved it and found the story and plot around time enthralling as well as liking how it was a joint season between Kai and nya
H.O.T is just alright in my opinion. My problems with this season is the animation and the writing. There were way too many moments where the show tried to be funny. But I did like the Time Twins, the Ray and Maya reveal, and the sets were fantastic. I got almost all except the Dragon Forge and Iron Doom.

What I like about this season is that All the time blades have some impact on the plot. The Green Blade: Time Punches Wu and Ray The Blue Blade: Slows the ninja down right as they capture wu The Red Blade: Stop The ninja so Krux and acronix can get the yellow blade The yellow blade: reverses Wu and Rays effects
"They didn't win we lost" Lloyd Mongomery Garmadon. Basically I just think that's just a fancy way of saying they both lost but as you can see in the episode that's not true as the hands of time obviously won, and took master Wu. Its probably the WORST line in the season.
I can agree that that line was one of the worst of the season. However, there are some other worse ones in the same season (and some others from other seasons too).
You know, I vaguely remember stating this to someone else. But I’ll do it again. In this season, a couple of terrible lines that really doesn’t work (and said by Krux): • “It is time to rule!” - Krux when facing off Wu and the Elemental Masters (Krux’s lines in Hands of Time were really dumb, and not my favorite of the time twins. This dialogue kinda fits the context of time, but the execution was bad.) • “Well, aren't you clever? Such a smart little ninja.” - Krux to Kai (Okay, there is so many things wrong with this line of dialogue, the way he’s saying to Kai just really think that it came out from a Scooby Doo show. Also, it seems too out-of-character for Krux to say that at Kai’s face. Again, not the best of the Time Twins.) And here are some other lines from different seasons that I think were done poorly: • “The Quiet One has the mask. We have all three!” - Killow when Harumi/The Quiet One obtained the last mask (Mask of Hatred) (Sons of Garmadon is well know for its season to change the tone to be a dark one, but this line really just killed the dark mood and it really seems a bit off to some of us, but I find this dialogue to be a bit funny.) • “Fools! All your existence, you have been powered by a lie... that the good guys always win. Sadly, they don't.” - Digital Overlord to the four main ninjas (I find this ironic that he claimed that the good guys don’t always win. But that’s not the case, like they’ve defeated the Overlord three times already and looking back on it, it’s pretty laughable if you think about it.) • “Garmadon's forces have that place pretty bottled up. And before you ask, no, I cannot use my Brown Power to break us in. Those abilities sadly flushed away.” - Dareth to Lloyd, Nya, and Skylor (First off, ew, and secondly, nobody asked you Dareth! Hunted was one of the worst portrayals of Dareth that I have ever seen, I mean… what’s up with the potty humors, it seems nasty and just like what was going on with the Hageman Brothers’ minds with this subplot. Hunted would’ve been higher on the best Ninjago seasons if they didn’t add the “Brown Power” subplot into the season.)
This seems like a good spot to let out my s7 gripes myself. Dr sonders went from silly wise museum guy to. Old grump who quote "wont use technology." * just went from living and contibuting to modern society plus Owns a whole museum*. He was the worst bad guy. I felt like it shoulda just been crux(whoever the young one is) and no silly flashback hats. But also only there mom shoulda been brought back dad still kaput. Like he raised them alone for a while and actually tought kai blacksmithing. Lastly the vermilion were just a worse stone warrior Plus serpentine mix. Already done both those but more scary obstacle like.
This is one of the best seasons cause it had one more better villians that accuatly seemed like a threat and extremely hard to beat and the tempral whip was the most fitting remix for the weekend whip
i remeber coming home form school to my grandmas house everyday and not being able to wait to watch the next episode of this season, I loved it so much!
what i will focus on in any story are the characters, especially the protagonist(s). if they are boring, then the entire story is boring. there really is no arc, its going thru the motions. its got too many lore dumps for my liking. its just not very interesting, its all going thru the motions. my biggest problem is that there is no problem. oh theres a villain, but the thing i want the most is the personal problem of a ninja. kai accepting his role is rise of the snakes, lloyd growing and becoming responsible, zane finding himself in a tech advanced world he doesnt really fit in, zane being missing, kai and lloyds brotherly relationship, jay being a bad friend, that stuff. the villain of a season should enhance that, not be a separate problem. i feel like the "your parents are traitors bit" should have a bigger impact on the siblings. kai being the older one and maybe remembering that moment thru a fog could believe it, nya being younger and just hearing stories of her parents being heroes could be in denial. strengthening of a sibling bond is a cool concept and overcoming a conflict could do it. the fact theres so much dead air and scenes that dont lead anywhere grinds my gears. 10 episodes to tell a full story from start to finish isnt a lot. its around 200 minutes, so a long movie but you gotta keep in mind this is a tv series with episodic elements. to explain in a different way, you can have one cake that can be cut into 10 slices and 10 cupcakes, but the way youll go about decorating them is different - with a cake you can put a lot of frosting on top, on a cupcake you gotta approach it individually. think of the frosting as plot and the treats as time, you can have the same amount of time but less plot to fill into it. in any case, when youre working with that, you really dont have time to waste. all those boring scenes actively make the season worse. the worst thing anything can be is boring. that means it has no redeeming value. secrets of forbidden spinjitzu is dumb most of the time, but its at least entertaining. here, no such things. i dislike hands of time more than crystalized for the same reason i dislike sonic heroes more than sonic 06, one is pretty bland and meh while the other is a fascinating case study on how incredibly someone can fail the themes of failure are alright but its never something the season goes all in for. you have the beginning battle, 1 flashback and then a bit at the end. thats not good, maybe if the smith parents realised how dumb they were it could be better but alas, they have not. in terms of what wu goes thru, because hes just a lame joke thru most of the season its not as effective as it could be. in other terms, it has potential, but saying that something has potential is just a roundabout way of saying that its real form is bad

19:36 Well earlier in this flashback they did say forging the Time Blades drained them. Perhaps instead of having children being the issue, forging the time blades ended up draining them of their *Elemental Powers.*
when it comes to the matter of time in the ninjago series, i tend to not think about it. its all over the place. examples: hands of time says that the battle with the time twins was over 40 years ago; yet nya and kai's parents look to be in there 40s when we first seem them in the series (maya looking even older in the flashbacks because of her cheekbones). being just over 20 when the battle takes place is being generous, so at minimum the show is basically saying that ray and maya are just over 60 years old, which they clearly do not look. sensei wu and lord garmadon looked to be in there 20's as well when the battle took place, and they currently look like they are over a hundred. they looked the same age during 'Battle Between Brothers' where garmadon was banished to the underworld. considering lloyd looks to be just over ten years old when we first seen him, that would mean that garmadon and wu aged over 60 years in that time frame. stuff like this just makes my brain hurt.
Idk if someone is gonna see this, but here I go. I think the vermillion commanders Blunch and Raggmunk are not that bad. Sure, they are the bad comic relief. But, without them, Machia wouldn't have shine so bright in the season. The reason of why we liked her so much is because of how good she was in comparison of the other two bonzos. Also, when the hands of time get rid of the commanders, I feel like they needed to do that in order to make the Iron Doom fully operational. Sure it worked before, but as a vehicle, with the commanders essentially controlling all the snakes inside it, they basically had a megazord, resistant to the powers of the elemental alliance and with a short reaction time (that's why the Iron Doom was so "fast" in terms of reacting to the strikes of the fusion dragon)
If you've come to love this season, great, genuinely happy for you Crusty. However, if your reasons for liking it are because of how bad crystalised are, I would heavily advise against that. I've seen many times in the Star Wars community how something is hated when it comes out, but once time has passed and there's something new to hate, people will go, "Well looking back X wasn't that bad in comparison to Y". I get your judgement can change over time, but I just hate this sort of revisionist history that seems to happen after a while.
Nah even without the existence of Crystalized I think I was too harsh on HoT. Crystalized just pushed it out of the number one worst spot for me. My subsequent rewatch made me enjoy the season for its actual strengths more. Its still one of the weakest ninjago seasons
I don't like how zane says random words after being a part broken since that just make me think he is just a robot that is programmed to have no humanity or ego. Making him just a cheap robot
it's a shame you didn't really mention the OST of this season, because if there's something they did right with this and in some people's opinions including mine better, it's the music of this season!
Something I didn’t like about the time blades was what the powers for them were, mainly the one that could slow time gets completely made useless after the time stop because it’s simply better
I personally absolutely LOVED this season, I can understand some of these things, like- "I need a hand BROTHER" and "I'm here for you SISTER!" are probably the worst lines ever help😭😭 but overall I don't care about any messups I personally loved Acronix in particular and the two knucklehead vermilion warriors too, I loved them A LOT I always love the two dummies that Ninjago has in each season sometimes lol - like Kruncha and Nuckle, Chope and Kapau, etc. Idk I just love it. The story was great, its just that the story telling wasnt as good as it could've been. I also LOVED Dareth and Ronin's Dynamic even though it turned out horribly lol! Also Zane was very cute with his vocabulary messed up
ALSO I honestly liked the way Lloyd was portrayed in this season. I feel like he was nervous to be a leader and the there ninja wouldn't see him the same . for example - either- they always talk about how they're equals on teams, or how they're brothers, I feel like Loyd felt that if he became A sensei, that's all the other ninja would see him as. Or he's scared to be considered "more important" or "higher up" yknow what I mean?
I used to like it when I watched it for the first time, but know it’s my least favorite season. The animation, plot, characterization of the Ninja, villains and humor was all terrible. I respect the people who like this season though.
This is kind irrelevant a bit, but one really specific thing I never liked was how Krux was revealed to be Saunders at the end of episode 1 and yet the characters don’t find out until episode 3. I mean it’s not that big of a deal, I just kinda wish they kept it as more of a secret leaving very subtle hints until the reveal.
The Saunders’s early reveal to us in the first episode is known as a “situational irony” that WE (the audience) know what the protagonists don’t. I like that detail, but yeah… don’t like how we know it too early, it just doesn’t have any emotions built up to it

i think that kais line of "are we destined to become evil too" is something that can be also related to cycles of abuse?
a lot of people who had abusive in any way shape or form parents have a worry that if they ever have kids/become parents that theyll be like their parents, that theyre "destined to be evil"

The reason Ray and Maya didn’t use their powers to defend themselves against Krux is likely because they passed on their elemental powers to Kai and Nya.

Considering that Ray was still able to spar with Kai in seabound, and Maya could still fight too, which was much later, i refuse to believe the the 2 of them couldn't have went and got weapons to fight Krux.

I will never understand people who say it's the bad season. What that season doesn't have that every other had?
It has our favourite characters, villains, plot, intro, battles, finale. There's no any little thing that is worse than any other season.
I watch this season just like I watch fan-favourite seasons (S4,5,8). There's no difference, nowhere. Animations and dialogues are also argueable, I don't see problems, that doesn't mean problems of animation don't exist, but they are really not that obvious like ninjago fans shout out to be.
And dialogues, what is wrong with them? They are normal and usual like any other season, I don't see problems with dialogues.
Many things are so hated in this season for no reason and people seem to overlook every single detail just to say "this is so so bad". I will never understand that hate.
S7 is a normal and good season just like any other, it could be worse than some seasons, it could be better than some seasons, but it's DEFINITELY NOT BAD

- The pacing in the middle sucks - if the middle was as good as the first and last episode it would be a really good season

And inconsistent characters would be a fair critique, if Ninjago had consistent characters to begin with, Name a single character that hasn't been inconsistent without the show explaining why
I feel like they couldv'e had Krux kidnap Ray and Maya using some tea or whatever to make them go unconscious and then having Ray and Maya wake up in his underground layer and having no choice but to work for him.
Yeah, my headcanon rewrite is that Krux as Dr. Santez (apologizes, if the spelling of the names is wrong) was visiting Ray and Maya for them to make "authentic replicas" of armor pieces, weapons and so on for the museum and while having discussions he's serving them a tea with poison which effects are slowly showing so it looks like they'd just got some sickness. Plotwist, the children are affected too. So when it comes to reveal of Krux's true identity, Ray and Maya are given a choice. Come with Krux and he gives them enough antidote just to cure their children so they can't cross him or they all die... Yeah, I know it's dark but I really like it.
Hands of time was the second Ninjago season I’ve watched fully. I’ll admit it’s plot made me feel sleepy at some points, but I liked the flashback action of the Old Wars. I didn’t know it was that widely hated though

if Machia wasn't killed, she would have power to control Iron Doom too. Iron Doom is working and moving on the fact that snakes of Vermillions move its certain parts, so that is why Krux and Acronix could control it so easily the same way as Blunck, Raggmunk and Machia did. so letting her alive would basically give another person control, and she could try to betray them and ruin everything and etc.
Personally I’ve never hated hands of time. It’s far from my favorite season and I do think it’s the most forgettable season but I don’t think it’s terrible. Especially after the complete train wreck that was crystallized

I definitely think it was better than Skybound. It had so many dumb choices and moments executed too early that would’ve made sense later in the story
On the one hand, Skybound had a pretty egregious problem where once one character learned a piece of info all of them suddenly know it, even ones who couldn't possibly know it. But on the other hand, having the same exposition dump two or three times for multiple plot beats in Hands of Time becomes annoying really fast.

I honestly wish David Shayne was kept on as a writer for a couple more seasons, he really had potential as a great writer since the stuff he wrote in HoT was sometimes genuinely brilliant. This season is like Horton Hears a Who for me. I remember liking both when I was little and didn't have hindsight but look at them now and see how they didn't particularly age well.
calling Horton Hears a Who a movie is a disgrace to the actual book, which had creative rhyming and a silly story for children to enjoy
I'm currently showing my GF this show, (And she LOVES it so far. She's on Prime Empire) and we both definitely agree that Ray and Maya being good all along, was a bad twist. A twist that harmed Kai's character in the long run of the show. And a twist, that had it not existed, the story would've been more compelling.
Imagine an alternate version of the show where Ray and Maya WERE these actual malicious traitors who joined the Time Twins at their own free will. People who thought there would be no consequences to abandoning their kids when the time machine was made. Then they could just go back in time and be parents, with their powers back and able to raise perfect little elemental masters. (Like, maybe they lost their powers making the time blades or something, and they clung to the past and felt powerless without that)
Imagine what that would do to Kai, who is all about upholding the honor his parents' 'legacy'. He's always wanted to do what they did and do it better. But what if they ended up being these bad role models? What if he was clinging to the past and what happened as a consequence to his parents abandoning him and Nya, and he had to learn a lesson that the past doesn't matter, and what he should focus on is who he wants to be now.
Imagine if the parents tried to play the 'you don't want to fight against your family' card, and their kids said back 'I have a family, it's the ninja'.
Imagine if Ray and Maya were thrown in prison, and the Wildbrain era's follow up of them is a redemption arc where they try to be better parents, and Kai and Nya aren't fond of letting them in their lives. My gosh, the compelling character work and drama there.
Having the parents be good all along not only harms the season's narrative that was built up to, but takes established trauma of your main characters away from them, without them ever working it out on their own. Again, if the parents weren't good, they'd have to work their trauma out on their own, which would've been neat to see.
The Mailman should have been Krux, it would have been SO much more impactful as he's a character that has actually existed throughout the series.

Actually Iron Doom gains sentience because snakes that made up Machia, Blank and Ruggmank (however you spell it) entered it, so that’s why Hands do Time destroyed them

The Iron Doom gained "sentience" because the snakes from the destroyed Vermillion possessed the mech and formed a sort of Buffmillion
A positive for this season is how determined the villains are to win they always send the vermillion to constantly try and get the time blades which I personally like
I know I'm late to the comments section, but interestingly enough, I actually learned that Dr. Saunders was Krux through the actually LEGO sets. The Iron Doom was the first Hands Of Time set I got, and I saw Dr. Saunders' face on the back of Krux' minifigure head. I was confused at first, but then I put two and two together, so that's how it was revealed to me.

The parents being traitors by choice would have been such a good thing for the story. Why the elemental masters could have just disagreed with the king, wu and Garmadon and thought they were better off alone? What if the reason they disappeared was because they were wanted as traitors? What if Crux manipulated them because of this? The fight between Ray and Kay would have hold a bigger weight since not only they were father and son, but they were holding different ideologies. And this connect to season 8 where the called out the ninja for not being perfect, same old elemental masters weren't supposed to be all "good". Wasted potential
i agree on the kidnapping, crux couldve had some of the vermillion with him, maybe not fully equipped but we know crux has been laying this plan out for 40 years so he wouldve had a few vermillion with him, just to add a layer of threat, or maybe even a fight scene, the flashback was way too rushed tbf

Anyone can say what they want about Hands of Time. When I came across this series, I was quite interested in it’s ending (especially the Time Blades themselves). When Wu was lost in Time and the Samurai X identity (who is PIZXAL) was left unknown, I would always look up Ninjago Season, anticipating for the next season. This is what got me to be interested into Ninjago itself. It also got me to go back and watch the other seasons online, Day of the Departed included. People can say what they like about season 7, but I will be referring to it as, “The Season which would bring us into what we would know only to be, The Oni Trilogy”.
one of the things i love about "the attack" is the scene early in the episode with krux, acronix, blunc and raggmunc arguing about the stolen timeblade. say what you want about the comedy in this season, but this is one of the times ninjago made laugh out loud, it's very silly. blunc and raggmunc aren't very good comic relief villains but this scene is that one time i appreciate them as such :-)

Hands of Time has never been unanimously the most hated season. It’s just the season that people like to hate on because they are scared to criticize earlier seasons (i.e. season 3) or later seasons (i.e. season 11).
It is worse than rebooted tho, and far worse than season 11 which is why it’s criticized. Also, season 11 gets more hate than season 7

Yep, the LEGO Ninjago Movie was one of the factors to on why Hands of Time wasn’t was made this good. The things you’ve listed out were the known factors of how the season failed (but the movie failed as well, basically a lose-lose situation). As for Maya looking younger, there isn’t a technical reason to why was it changed to make her look younger (maybe poor choices of design?). But, according to Tommy Andreason, he explained that “the truth is we had to match the head in the show with the one the toy designers had available to the because Maya would be a figure. She is not younger in the show, just may look younger to some." Which I find to be a stupid reason that they couldn’t produce a different face that matches with how Maya should look.

unlike a lot of ninjago seasons, season 7 doesn't struggle with baffling writing decisions, one bad episode or missed potential, it instead struggles with problems that linger throughout the entire season like bad attempts at being funny, horrible dialogue and being too long. The exception to this is the reveal of kai and nya's parents (the flashback to be specific) which is a baffling writing decision.

I think that the line in the sand and the attack are some of the best episodes of this season and my brother and I put "the line in the sand" at the top of our tier list about this season, and we placed the "attack" in the top 5 episodes of this season, of course, I have some problems with it such as the bad animation and some plot issues, but it's still a better episode than "the attack" from lab rats elite force

I didn't even know people hated hands of time so much, I loved it, yeah the dialog was weird, the animation did kinda fall off, and there were some plot holes but i still loved it. The worst season is definitely either Chrystalized or season 3.

Hands of time was always the season that i keep forgetting even existed in the first place. Its propably because my Ninjago phase ended with Skybound, but even when i went and rewatched Ninjago in 2019 i now realized i still actually barely remember this season lol
What i remember is that i just kinda enjoyed it but i definetly could feel like this season broke the godlike streak Ninjago had going since Rebooted. 2014-2016 was the best era for Ninjago since the seasons that came out in that time were peak Ninjago content. It just didnt feel like its on the same level anymore.
Sons of Garmadon went back to being peak tho, ngl.

The fight with acronix in the 1st episode and the fight of a time of traitors, along with the better aspects of the season made me rank hands of time quite high for a while.
But then Blunk and Raggmunk made it lose more and more positions over time.

It certainly has issues but I've always loved it and found the story and plot around time enthralling as well as liking how it was a joint season between Kai and nya
H.O.T is just alright in my opinion. My problems with this season is the animation and the writing. There were way too many moments where the show tried to be funny. But I did like the Time Twins, the Ray and Maya reveal, and the sets were fantastic. I got almost all except the Dragon Forge and Iron Doom.
Ray and Maya lost their powers after Kai and Nya were born which is why they didn't fight Krux - or at least that was the only way it makes sense to me

What I like about this season is that All the time blades have some impact on the plot.
The Green Blade: Time Punches Wu and Ray
The Blue Blade: Slows the ninja down right as they capture wu
The Red Blade: Stop The ninja so Krux and acronix can get the yellow blade
The yellow blade: reverses Wu and Rays effects
"They didn't win we lost" Lloyd Mongomery Garmadon. Basically I just think that's just a fancy way of saying they both lost but as you can see in the episode that's not true as the hands of time obviously won, and took master Wu. Its probably the WORST line in the season.
I can agree that that line was one of the worst of the season. However, there are some other worse ones in the same season (and some others from other seasons too).

You know, I vaguely remember stating this to someone else. But I’ll do it again. In this season, a couple of terrible lines that really doesn’t work (and said by Krux):
• “It is time to rule!” - Krux when facing off Wu and the Elemental Masters
(Krux’s lines in Hands of Time were really dumb, and not my favorite of the time twins. This dialogue kinda fits the context of time, but the execution was bad.)
• “Well, aren't you clever? Such a smart little ninja.” - Krux to Kai
(Okay, there is so many things wrong with this line of dialogue, the way he’s saying to Kai just really think that it came out from a Scooby Doo show. Also, it seems too out-of-character for Krux to say that at Kai’s face. Again, not the best of the Time Twins.)
And here are some other lines from different seasons that I think were done poorly:
• “The Quiet One has the mask. We have all three!” - Killow when Harumi/The Quiet One obtained the last mask (Mask of Hatred)
(Sons of Garmadon is well know for its season to change the tone to be a dark one, but this line really just killed the dark mood and it really seems a bit off to some of us, but I find this dialogue to be a bit funny.)
• “Fools! All your existence, you have been powered by a lie... that the good guys always win. Sadly, they don't.” - Digital Overlord to the four main ninjas
(I find this ironic that he claimed that the good guys don’t always win. But that’s not the case, like they’ve defeated the Overlord three times already and looking back on it, it’s pretty laughable if you think about it.)
• “Garmadon's forces have that place pretty bottled up. And before you ask, no, I cannot use my Brown Power to break us in. Those abilities sadly flushed away.” - Dareth to Lloyd, Nya, and Skylor
(First off, ew, and secondly, nobody asked you Dareth! Hunted was one of the worst portrayals of Dareth that I have ever seen, I mean… what’s up with the potty humors, it seems nasty and just like what was going on with the Hageman Brothers’ minds with this subplot. Hunted would’ve been higher on the best Ninjago seasons if they didn’t add the “Brown Power” subplot into the season.)

This seems like a good spot to let out my s7 gripes myself. Dr sonders went from silly wise museum guy to. Old grump who quote "wont use technology." * just went from living and contibuting to modern society plus Owns a whole museum*. He was the worst bad guy. I felt like it shoulda just been crux(whoever the young one is) and no silly flashback hats.
But also only there mom shoulda been brought back dad still kaput. Like he raised them alone for a while and actually tought kai blacksmithing.
Lastly the vermilion were just a worse stone warrior Plus serpentine mix. Already done both those but more scary obstacle like.

This is one of the best seasons cause it had one more better villians that accuatly seemed like a threat and extremely hard to beat and the tempral whip was the most fitting remix for the weekend whip
i remeber coming home form school to my grandmas house everyday and not being able to wait to watch the next episode of this season, I loved it so much!
what i will focus on in any story are the characters, especially the protagonist(s). if they are boring, then the entire story is boring. there really is no arc, its going thru the motions. its got too many lore dumps for my liking. its just not very interesting, its all going thru the motions. my biggest problem is that there is no problem. oh theres a villain, but the thing i want the most is the personal problem of a ninja. kai accepting his role is rise of the snakes, lloyd growing and becoming responsible, zane finding himself in a tech advanced world he doesnt really fit in, zane being missing, kai and lloyds brotherly relationship, jay being a bad friend, that stuff. the villain of a season should enhance that, not be a separate problem.
i feel like the "your parents are traitors bit" should have a bigger impact on the siblings. kai being the older one and maybe remembering that moment thru a fog could believe it, nya being younger and just hearing stories of her parents being heroes could be in denial. strengthening of a sibling bond is a cool concept and overcoming a conflict could do it.
the fact theres so much dead air and scenes that dont lead anywhere grinds my gears. 10 episodes to tell a full story from start to finish isnt a lot. its around 200 minutes, so a long movie but you gotta keep in mind this is a tv series with episodic elements. to explain in a different way, you can have one cake that can be cut into 10 slices and 10 cupcakes, but the way youll go about decorating them is different - with a cake you can put a lot of frosting on top, on a cupcake you gotta approach it individually. think of the frosting as plot and the treats as time, you can have the same amount of time but less plot to fill into it. in any case, when youre working with that, you really dont have time to waste.
all those boring scenes actively make the season worse. the worst thing anything can be is boring. that means it has no redeeming value. secrets of forbidden spinjitzu is dumb most of the time, but its at least entertaining. here, no such things. i dislike hands of time more than crystalized for the same reason i dislike sonic heroes more than sonic 06, one is pretty bland and meh while the other is a fascinating case study on how incredibly someone can fail
the themes of failure are alright but its never something the season goes all in for. you have the beginning battle, 1 flashback and then a bit at the end. thats not good, maybe if the smith parents realised how dumb they were it could be better but alas, they have not. in terms of what wu goes thru, because hes just a lame joke thru most of the season its not as effective as it could be. in other terms, it has potential, but saying that something has potential is just a roundabout way of saying that its real form is bad

Hold up, people thought Hands Of Time was the worst? I quite enjoyed it at the time and thought it was alright. Guess I don't really keep up with the rest of the community much.

Well earlier in this flashback they did say forging the Time Blades drained them.
Perhaps instead of having children being the issue, forging the time blades ended up draining them of their *Elemental Powers.*
when it comes to the matter of time in the ninjago series, i tend to not think about it. its all over the place.
examples:
hands of time says that the battle with the time twins was over 40 years ago; yet nya and kai's parents look to be in there 40s when we first seem them in the series (maya looking even older in the flashbacks because of her cheekbones). being just over 20 when the battle takes place is being generous, so at minimum the show is basically saying that ray and maya are just over 60 years old, which they clearly do not look.
sensei wu and lord garmadon looked to be in there 20's as well when the battle took place, and they currently look like they are over a hundred. they looked the same age during 'Battle Between Brothers' where garmadon was banished to the underworld. considering lloyd looks to be just over ten years old when we first seen him, that would mean that garmadon and wu aged over 60 years in that time frame.
stuff like this just makes my brain hurt.
The whole ninjas’ age and in general. Yeah… that left me with a massive headache from that 😵💫
Idk if someone is gonna see this, but here I go. I think the vermillion commanders Blunch and Raggmunk are not that bad. Sure, they are the bad comic relief. But, without them, Machia wouldn't have shine so bright in the season. The reason of why we liked her so much is because of how good she was in comparison of the other two bonzos. Also, when the hands of time get rid of the commanders, I feel like they needed to do that in order to make the Iron Doom fully operational. Sure it worked before, but as a vehicle, with the commanders essentially controlling all the snakes inside it, they basically had a megazord, resistant to the powers of the elemental alliance and with a short reaction time (that's why the Iron Doom was so "fast" in terms of reacting to the strikes of the fusion dragon)

If you've come to love this season, great, genuinely happy for you Crusty. However, if your reasons for liking it are because of how bad crystalised are, I would heavily advise against that. I've seen many times in the Star Wars community how something is hated when it comes out, but once time has passed and there's something new to hate, people will go, "Well looking back X wasn't that bad in comparison to Y". I get your judgement can change over time, but I just hate this sort of revisionist history that seems to happen after a while.
Nah even without the existence of Crystalized I think I was too harsh on HoT. Crystalized just pushed it out of the number one worst spot for me. My subsequent rewatch made me enjoy the season for its actual strengths more. Its still one of the weakest ninjago seasons
In the episode where they get the time slowing blade, I spotted Jay when there was already another jay on the motorcycle

I don't like how zane says random words after being a part broken since that just make me think he is just a robot that is programmed to have no humanity or ego. Making him just a cheap robot
it's a shame you didn't really mention the OST of this season, because if there's something they did right with this and in some people's opinions including mine better, it's the music of this season!

I think it's a way to emphasize their failure, clunky as it is.
Something I didn’t like about the time blades was what the powers for them were, mainly the one that could slow time gets completely made useless after the time stop because it’s simply better
Krux is more powerfal than Acronix overall. The guy could probably beat Infinite Wishes Nadakhan in a fight.
I think it’s about time someone finally gives this season some respect…
I have a feeling LEGO Ninjago season 17, Krux and Acronix will be back soon. I’m not sure when or where, but soon.
Next season is not season 17? It's Ninjago United season 1, or so we have been told.
Even if it was still the same series, it wouldn't be season 17 it would be 16
I personally absolutely LOVED this season, I can understand some of these things, like- "I need a hand BROTHER" and "I'm here for you SISTER!" are probably the worst lines ever help😭😭 but overall I don't care about any messups I personally loved Acronix in particular and the two knucklehead vermilion warriors too, I loved them A LOT I always love the two dummies that Ninjago has in each season sometimes lol - like Kruncha and Nuckle, Chope and Kapau, etc. Idk I just love it. The story was great, its just that the story telling wasnt as good as it could've been. I also LOVED Dareth and Ronin's Dynamic even though it turned out horribly lol! Also Zane was very cute with his vocabulary messed up
ALSO I honestly liked the way Lloyd was portrayed in this season. I feel like he was nervous to be a leader and the there ninja wouldn't see him the same . for example - either- they always talk about how they're equals on teams, or how they're brothers, I feel like Loyd felt that if he became A sensei, that's all the other ninja would see him as. Or he's scared to be considered "more important" or "higher up" yknow what I mean?

I used to like it when I watched it for the first time, but know it’s my least favorite season. The animation, plot, characterization of the Ninja, villains and humor was all terrible. I respect the people who like this season though.
This is kind irrelevant a bit, but one really specific thing I never liked was how Krux was revealed to be Saunders at the end of episode 1 and yet the characters don’t find out until episode 3. I mean it’s not that big of a deal, I just kinda wish they kept it as more of a secret leaving very subtle hints until the reveal.
I agree it would be better if he would just re appear and disappear until they find out
The Saunders’s early reveal to us in the first episode is known as a “situational irony” that WE (the audience) know what the protagonists don’t. I like that detail, but yeah… don’t like how we know it too early, it just doesn’t have any emotions built up to it
