The episode was pretty explicit that heat wasn't enough; it was the love associated with the Olympic torch that did the trick.
Also, they did say the Isolus chose Chloe because she was lonely, so she was already pretty isolated before it showed up. It was probably the situation with her dad that made her cut herself off.

16:48 IN CLASSIC WHO - The First Doctor's first Companion is his granddaughter who went by the name of Susan Foreman who was in Seasons 1 and 2. She calls him Grandfather all the time, not Doctor, one of the few people who do not call him Doctor. We know for sure she is at least Gallifreyan because the 20th Anniversary Special takes place on Gallifrey and she knows all the sights. Why her name was Susan, we do not know. Foreman comes from the name of the junkyard that TARDIS was in during the first episode. Two of her schoolteachers became Companions during the course of the first episode....

I believe that Chloe was targeted by the lonely alien, because she was an abused child who was still trying to process what had happened to her and she needed love as much as the alien. Her mother was still trying to process what had happened to herself as well, so she wasn’t as available as she should have been for Chloe. Their ability to sing away the Spectre of her abusive father was a symbol of them beginning to move on together.

Easter egg, the Street was named after Dame Kelly Holmes who was the 800m and 1500m Olympic Champion.
Holmes specialised in the 800 metres and 1,500 metres events and won gold medals for both distances at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The First Doctor, way back when the show started in 1963, traveled with his granddaughter Susan. She was the first ever companion.
Even in classic Who, the details of who his partner and other family might have been remained a mystery. The Time War happened off screen, in the time between Classic and NuWho. We don't know what happened to the Doctor's family, but since he calls himself the Last Time Lord, one way or another we can assume that they are dead.

    Fun fact:
This episode loosely drew its inspiration from a late 80’s film called Paperhouse where a young bed-ridden girl draws things which apparently come to life - it’s quite terrifying! Paperhouse itself was inspired by a children’s fiction novel called ‘Marianne Dreams’ and was adapted for British television in the 1970’s as the children’s serial ‘Escape Into Night’.

This episode was a last-minute addition, replacing a script by Stephen Fry that was too costly, so this was the "cheap" episode. You can tell it's last minute, cause the London 2012 Olympics were only announced in the summer of 2005. Hence the complete lack of the real London 2012 logo, as it didn't exist yet. (While we're at it, BBC News 24 wasn't called that by 2012 but yeah, hindsight is 2012, right?)

When you say '"Who knows?" like that it's obligatory to tap the side of your nose. One day you'll know why.
Not the greatest episode but I must admit that having seen several people react to it, it's grown in my estimation. Nina Sosanya is always good (the Mum) and I always thought that Abisola Agbaje did really well as the alien, particularly snarling back at Rose!
And I haven't seen that ending for a while, that was well done - written by Russell, presumably.
Always a delight when a reaction pops up. It's almost time for really grown-up Doctor Who! Who 👃?

  • @DiamondzFinder_

This episode is so underrated, it actually lists as one of the least liked new who episodes, and I never understood why. I've heard a lot of people say that Chloe's performance was a reason, but honestly I think she did a very good job of showing the loneliness of chloe during the short time we saw her without the isolus, and as for when the isolus was controlling her, it definitely gave obsessing and scared to me. As for the rest of the episode, I love this one. So many good details: the bit about the tardis needing to be re-parked, the moment(s) with the doctor sensing something is wrong or different (as in feeling where the ionic energy was, and then later when he said a storm was coming, it almost felt instinctual. And yeah, it definitely reminded me of Mary Poppins (Many fans love the idea that Mary Poppins is a Timelord, including me :3 )), the connection of the mother and chloe in the end. Also, when it comes to the isolus pod, it didn't just need heat, it needed love, and the olympic torch represented the love of all the fans.

They're in the process of re-recording Edwards's lines with another actor or newsreader - possibly Jason Mohammed, seeing as he has Who experience. It's surprising how much Edwards can be heard throughout. The redubbed version will available before too long, I'm sure.
