    Well done Tony! As I said last week, a good friend (now based in NZ) has both tents, but now uses the Akto most of the time, reserving the Soulo for deep winter and/or a base camp (static) camping trip. I really like the sand colour, and have it in the Akto and Nallo 2, it shows up really well in sunny photos. The sun will come back soon!!

      That would be my overall assessment. If you have or really want soulo ok or tall lol . But get the akto generally. Although I leave it very open for folks to decide :) thank you 😊

      Thanks Tony for your detailed response. I am a huge fan of your channel, and indeed been very touched by your honesty with difficult times.
      I'm afraid I was in a grumpy mood when I posted the comment, but I was in a grumpy mood for a very good reason due to the accommodation I'm currently staying overseas 'doing it' and the other guests applauded my stance and so the long-standing issue is now resolved, thanks to me the Englishman who wouldn't take any more sh*t!. Sometimes a grumpy bloke can help get things done?
      Yeah of course I've seen your Lakes videos and enjoyed it as I do all your films.

    Excellent comparison video - great editing Tony, well done. I seriously considered Akto but really bought Soulo where my aim was to get onto the fells with it. I do like that vestibule space on the Akto but also the intention of the Soulo, is for pitching in tight spots so you don’t get that luxury.

      It's a fab shelter for sure just heavy lol add akto weight you got my nammajt lol 😆 no one will go wrong with either tbh

    Hi Tony another great video , I still prefer the soulo even at 2.4 kg on the red label I would sacrifice the weight as I save weight on my other kit which compensates , I will be buying this in the next couple of months , my msr elixir 2 weighs 2.3 kg so I’m used to carrying this , Akto comes in at 1.7 kg still a nice tent but just seems a bit tight on the sloping part but the akto has been going for over 25 years so it must be very popular . Regards steve 😃😃😃

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  2 роки тому

      That is half my life lol yup I'd agree if the rest of your kit is light you might get away with Soulo. How tall are you? I agree that the inside is close but its not tight and I always leave inner door open so gives impression of more space as porch there. I'd say if have Soulo you're doing ok lol but its still nearly a kg heavier lol ouch and for many I'd suggest save the weight its fine in there I lived in it filmed in it cooked in it for three nights lol but on a longer walk.... I'll take one of my MLD anyway and save more weight gain loads more space lol 😆 I'll try a live stream Sunday evening if you're around

    Is the Akto at risk if you leave the windward vent open in high winds?

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  11 місяців тому

      Do you mean one at foot head room? Not really . I tend to open both and leave both open. The overhang seems to block any water or rain being blown onto inner.
      Top vent just do up down as needed

      @@TonyHobbs Bought an Akto and Soulo BL recently. I like you am 5'8. On an exped 5r inflatable mat I have over an inch headroom left when sitting up in the akto . The Soulo inner is perfect, the Akto cramped. Even though the Akto is super strong with 2x10mm poles, the Soulo inspires alot more confidence; the Akto feels bombproof, the Soulo Nucleur Bombproof.
      The new akto tent's top vent leeked at the corner, but fine after seam sealing it.

      Unfortunately I only sat in it for short while so difficult to say but yes just esp outside winter lol

  • @stuartdorman128
    @stuartdorman128 2 роки тому

    I've bought and sold the Soulo three times. I want to love it, but it's a bit of a one trick pony for use in the Rockies - too heavy for general use in 3 season conditions, but when you really *need* its strength in winter, going out in sub -10C conditions over 3000m above sea level you're really safer with a partner rather than flying so(u)lo. The Soulo's too small for my horse of a dog anyways, as is the Akto. That is, unless I'm the one sleeping outside. I've never been fond of the Akto, it feels like a design that's desperately in need of an update. The Yellow Label Enan shows what the Akto might have been, although they made a few compromises to keep the weight down and to avoid cannibalising sales of the Akto. I'm bringing an Unna to the UK this year, will see if I regret that decision.

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  2 роки тому +1

      If you bring the Unna then that’s another video op for me to muster up. It’s very popular here but it’s heavy I can’t imagine dragging that out too often. My kit with camera ok GoPro power packs and three days of food is heavy enough. For most the UA-camrs who have this and video it they go out one night and home lol so save on food weight although they add booze quite often lol sod that weight! The Akto is nice apart from weight lol the enan has been suggested to me but for now there is no justification in getting just for views… one day maybe. The tarp 5 looks interesting for silnylon and might be worth a punt….more folks likely to search hilleberg tarp than MLD then they see a proper tarp lol
      Lassie seems to live outside but probably would pop in in your extremes

    • @stuartdorman128
      @stuartdorman128 2 роки тому +1

      @@TonyHobbs I had the Tarp 5 and never found a use for it. The shape is quite unique and given its size, it's rather limiting. Stick with the MLD Grace, Tony. Mine it always in my pack and I might use it to create a porch for the Unna. Speaking of which, the latter took its maiden voyage this weekend in the Sangre de Cristo mountains in southern Colorado. Still too small for the 60kg dog, but my 20kg one will probably do well in it with me. My son used the Unna while the dogs and I piled into the Staika

    Loved your channel for years. You say all the right things, but do you ACTUALLY DO IT? Where has your recent exploration been and what are your future travel dreams other than boring Dartmoor which is the epitomy of a UK ecologically denuded landscape?
    Haven't seen a single bird or insect or any other evidence of nature. Maybe try the Julian Alps in Slovenia or fall down a crevasse in the Alps?
    You review great gear, but don't seem to do great journeys?

    • @TonyHobbs
      @TonyHobbs  2 роки тому +2

      Well, it is good you enjoy the channel and the reviews and info I give and encouraging to read that in your opinion I say the right things. I wonder what you think of other you tubers, do they say the right things and do they travel as much as they should in your opinion? I don't think many do? Indeed most just go out for one night (as I used to) and return to the comfort of their home the next day. If you follow me closely you will see that I am regularly staying out in my camp for at least two nights, more often three and once four nights and the four nights might happen again. Give me chance to recharge the body battery away from home. So yes I DO ACTUALLY DO IT! Whilst Dartmoor is not exactly far flung nor is it some mountain in the Alps but it is a training base for the British Army and the conditions are quite remote and extreme at times. So definitely it tests the kit and mind. I might be boring to you in what I do, but I enjoy it and I occasionally joke with self that probably is boring to some a guy chilling out in a tent on camera, but thankfully a few enjoy it. Which is fine by me. I could fall down a crevasse then you'd get bored not watching me in a tent on Dartmoor. I'm sure you followed me in the Lakes on here that was pretty challenging camping where a lot would have bailed. Of course far flung would be nice..... Carry on watching and supporting the channel.

      @domo3552 2 роки тому

      I love your channel indeed Tony, and thanks for sharing. But you're maybe not 'doing it'. Having expensive kit and just spending a couple of nights on Dartmoor might suit some, but would be a pretty dismal experience for others. Your kit seems overqualified for your limited times out. But I'm happy that you are enjoying the outdoors! 🙂
      I just hope that you can maybe someday find a couple of months in the Alps or Pyrenees, Scandinavia etc. to actually DO IT and then share your experience. DCF on Dartmoor is maybe a little OTT. And I have relations in the SAS so appreciate it's challenges.
