Oh man, you say you’re retired but you’re really working for the Thailand tourist board, this video is a 10 out of 10, very enjoyable and super educational for us guys, your subscribers. Well done mate 👍👍
I was 'retired''...but I was never bored. CM has a huge art community, vibrant theater scene, and temples on literally every corner. I'll be following your adventures even harder than I followed before, sending prayers and love to this incredible city and the people I love!
@@RetiredWorkingForYou Oh My Gosh! I will def be watching for that! I have friends there who are struggling. I pray for them each and every day. Chiang Mai sort of gets lost in terms of tourism because it's not a cool 'beach vibe' travel spot. So folks aren't aware of how decimated their economy is, same as the beaches just a little different.
@@kmc7876 haha no, Canada is amazing! But when you grow up in a certain area sometimes you want to experience something new. Both Canada and Thailand are amazing in their our ways :)
You provide so much information, such a beautiful "documentary" if I could call it that. I think this is amazing for people that love the history of this country.
Love Chiang Mai. I only got 2 weeks in Thailand my first trip, and I made sure I spent 3 days up in Chiang Mai. One of my favourite parts of the trip....loved that city.
Wow... even though I'm Thai and currently living in Chiang Mai (*I bought a house here because I love this city so much), but I didn't know about all those logs transportation and history you talked about in this video. Thank you for such a great informative and beautiful video you made. 👍
My earliest memory of being in Thailand as a kid, was riding a Sam Lo with my cousin. I remember we drove thru the night and I was scared falling off haha but it was so much fun that I still remember it till now, even tho i was just 4 years old at that time. Actually having teary eyes knowing they wont be there for too long anymore. In Pak Thong CHai, my mums hometown, Sam Los are also still rolling too :)
Actually the original Moat was quite a bit wider than it is now. Much of it was infilled when they put the road in. Also some of the old walls were rebuilt as well. Great tour . Thank you Hope I run into you in your travels.
This history content is really great and nicely edited! I lived in CM 3 times and felt much more culture just watching this video! I must try harder and get on the Samlor!
I am native Thai now living in Chiang Mai for 30 years. I would like to say big thanks for the Chiang Mai content to you. One thing I think it's funny foreign tourists love Bangkok but almost all Thai tourists love Chiangmai. The cost of living here is also more Cheaper than in Bangkok. Thank you for your great video.
I spent a few days in Chiang Mai in 2019 and loved it, so many beautiful temples there and many ethical elephant sanctuaries too. When you mentioned Doi Suthep I thought to myself that you're not going there by Samlor (it's quite the hill leading there). You should definitely visit Doi Inthanon national park whilst you're there to find the coolest temperature in Thailand at the top of the highest point in the country.
Great series starter! Thank you. I miss Thailand and very much want to return. Chiang Mai a special place in my heart, so I’ll be anticipating your next video with excitement! 🫶
I did this with my friend a couple days ago because of this video and it was amazing! Our drivers were a couple of these guys in the video, including Deng! They've known each other for 50 years!
Love that transition shot at the beginning! Digging your accent too bud - I spent 3 months living in Calgary and the excellent manner of speaking takes me back and reminds me of great times 😊
Pico Rivera Jerry here.... Great timing on the video Chris I really appreciate it. The good Karen and I will be arriving in Bangkok on the 17th and after a few days then going to Chiang Mai. We're going to use your tips and suggestions to enhance our trip... Hope you have a great time
Wow, I just walked across that same bridge you did yesterday and made a video of it too. I'm sure you have more lead time and probably were there before me and I know your video is way better than mine, but cool that we were both in the same place! I retired to Chiang Mai 5 months ago and love it, beautiful city but I live outside of the actual city, best of both worlds!
There you go again Chris casually blowing our minds within less than 8 seconds with an editing trick that seems like magic, whatever you'll show next now... I'm in!
I used to traveling by this kind of bike (samlor) when I was a child. Not only in Chiangmai but in several provinces. I don’t want it to gone forever. In Lampang province there is a carriage witt horse that is cool to try for your experience. Check it out. Cheer!
Thanks for the all information you’ve provided Chris……love the vlog on Chiang Mai, a city I’ve never been to before and now cannot wait to visit!!! February 2022 here we come:)
When we visited Thailand we visited Phuket, Koh Samui, Kho Phangan, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai. Of all the places Chiang Mai was our favorite. Just a different more friendly more relaxed vibe than the rest. Must visit when you go to Thailand.
Thanks Chris, we live in CM 5 years and didn't know how to book a Samloy we will book one this week!, we are year of the Snake and Dragon our kids are Dog,Rat,Tiger, and ram
Hope you're in Chiang Mai for a while Chris so as to film more vid's at the high level of relevance you always provide as a lot of other channels are lacking on occasions. We spent a month there back in 2015 after travelling from Aust. and now hoping to retire there and use as a base to explore the SE Asia region. Thanks and Cheers!
Remember me the live video of 1 year ago, you went to a beerbar where they had La Trappe blond on the tap(my hometown beer from the Netherlands ☺), and you got one. Cheers buddy and enjoy, C Ya in the next one C.J. 🙌🍻
Back from Bangkok by overnight train arrived in Chiang Mai early morning. I often took the ‘ Sam Lor’ from Sam Pa Koi Market to Warorot Market (Kad Luang) through the Nawarat Bridge. Beautiful morning ride. I’m 💯 % support the tricycle in Chiang Mai. Please try and support them I recommended to try it in Morning or at night for a cooler weather. Very affordable price and enjoyable.
I love the history content! It’s super interesting. Keep them coming Chris! But I am very glad the cyclo industry is dying in Thailand. It’s been that way as well in Vietnam. I’ve spoken cyclo drivers several times during my many visits to Vietnam in the last 25 years. And to me, this means better opportunities exists elsewhere for the new Thai generation (and Vietnamese). No one grows up saying they want to be a cyclo driver! Its hard, arduous work for inconsistent income. It’s not like passing down farming, cooking or creating art by hand to preserve worthwhile traditions that truly benefits the culture. This mostly benefits the tourists. Most cyclo drivers do this not because they like it but because they don’t see better alternatives for themselves. And our enjoyment of this experience (not dissimilar to riding an elephant) is one I’m happy to let go as it probably means better options for them. Unlike riding an elephant, I would still happily pay a cyclo driver if I’m fortunate to visit Thailand as a tourist but I would also be very happy if it’s not there too.
amazing comment. my hope with this channel is that each video STARTS a conversation that others add to. so your useful information added onto this topic is EXACTLY what i'm hoping we get more of here. cheers!
Loving the history content! For more of the same, I can recommend Michael Portillo's Great Asian Railway Journeys, especially the episode on Chiang Mai to Lampang. It's a BBC series but it looks like some helpful person has uploaded it to this particular website.
I am so jealous, Chris! I live in Chiang Mai but am working (not retired) in the states right now, and can't wait to get back. *BIG TIP * Eat at Khao Soi Khun Yai in the old city. They have the BEST Khao Soi in CM! Enjoy your time there, you're going to love it. Cheers!
Year of the Dog, i really enjoyed this video, fell instantly in love with Chiang Mai 😍 hopefully you have some time to visit one or 2 of the cafés i send you 😊🙌🏻

Hiya Chris 👋and Year of the monkey 🙉 for me birth wise and quite apt too ha ha ! 🤣 Looks so relaxing on the Samlor touring the city and eco friendly too , but sad to hear no younger guys taking over the reins from the older generation who still look as if the could go on forever by the looks of them ! Envoy your stay and cheers for the video 👍
Haha I just left Chiang Mai yesterday good timing :p I always used my bicycle in CM you should get one! or for other alternative transport the kayak place at Fa Ham temple is chill too
Definitely going to enjoy this experience next time I'm in chiang mai ,all the farang that don't visit because of the absence of a beach don't know what they're missing 🙏🏻
These type of bike transports are popular in tourist hot spots in California, like Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco and the Gaslight district in San Diego, operated by young people. I worry that I'm too heavy for these older Thai men, but if I see them, I'll take them when I'm in Chiang Mai (February & March).
There are similar translation but only 2 where run by young and old man like in Bruce lee's movie. Also in Canada they ran by young university student but quite costly.$100/trip
