71 - Make a Cutting Board Juice Groove Jig

We have had a great many requests from our viewers and community group members to explain a quick and easy to cut a juice groove into a cutting board. On the surface it seems like an easy task, but it’s not as simple as all that. There must be a guide fence of some sort for the router to ride along, and a stop at either end. Also, it’s important that these are the exact same all the way around the cutting board so that the corners of the groove line up just right.
It’s possible to create a one-off jig, just by screwing some pieces to a surface to accomplish this. But, what if you make lots of cutting boards to sell at craft fairs? Or you make several as gifts, and what if they are all different sizes?
We tried to answer that with this jig. It’s a pretty simple project. And it will allow you to quickly readjust to a new cutting board size in a few seconds, and then cut a perfect groove in about a minute.
This project is for all of you who asked us to help come up with a solution. The total project is a combination of many other youtubers’ work that we have seen and a bit of our own engineering thrown in.

Do you have a plan for this?
I would suggest using the router in the jig in a clockwise direction so the bit draws the router against the jig. That should give less risk of wandering as you go around. Also I think adding washers, especially on the slot, would give a more solid hold. Love the jig though, simple and thoroughly useful for people making multiple boards.

Don't know why I am so late to this but just saw this about a week ago and bought your plans. Adjusted the size to fit my router and needs and made it from scrap wood in the shop. Used it today for the first time and loved it. Went from a 20 minute per board setup with fences that were somewhat wobbly to a 2 minute setup with firm fences. Cut 2 boards in less than 20 minutes. Absolutely super happy.
Whenever I have screws that are too long, I clip them with a lineman's pliers. Unless the screws are stainless steel, they cut pretty easily, and if you pre-drill the holes correctly, nothing protrudes from the bottom.

I am making a cutting board with juice groove and finger cutouts for lifting the board for my neighbor who is moving from the Wilmington, NC area to Indiana. She loves to cook and her husband said she does not have a cutting board. She is a beautiful person and I will miss her very much. I think she will really like the cutting board. My fixture is fixed for this particular board but I'm going to make a fixture like yours because I would like to make the cutting boards as gifts and possibly be able to sell them at craft shows. Thanks James for the video of this. I tried the other way you showed on the router table but my fence isn't long enough for the one on my table saw. The jig I had made for that method came out perfect. Just ordered these plans and though it is a large jig I can get it on the wall with the rest of the jigs I've made. James I am very sorry I became a pain in the rear end . I’m 70 now and I’m old fashioned. You’re a very good person for understanding the problem I had with the email. It looks like that Jig could also be used to lock in a picture frame. And could use the router to cut designs into a picture frame. :)

With cutting boards you have a nice flat surface for the router to ride on. You'd have to make sure there's enough surface area on your picture frame to do that, or use some scrap stock of the same thickness.

Great job. The only thing I would change would be to make the fences adjustable in height. Perhaps some packing under the fences once they’re in position to make the top of the cutting board flush with the fence guides. Thanks a lot

Great video…thank you! At the end you touched on IF you wanted the groove closer / farther from the edge but you didn’t discuss how to make that adjustment. Would you need to make all new fences, or could you possibly just add in a strip of wood on all four sides between the board and the each of the 4 fences? Much appreciated.
So this has to be about the third time I've watched this video, and I'll be making this jig in the next week or so. But, I had one suggestion that I'm not sure anyone else has made yet or not. On all of the slides and the fixed left side, what if you made the top guides hang over their respective slides but the same distance on the slide to it's right (going counter clockwise)? That way you could fill in the 2-3 inch gap between each of the guides and never need to worry about hitting a dead spot. From the looks of it, those pieces hanging over wouldn't ever be in the way of any moving slide.
If you run the router Clockwise, the turning of the bit will pull the router towards the outer guide board. Running it counter clockwise the bit will try to travel to the inside of the cutting board, thus ruining the groove.
normally i thought you go left to right which is counter clockwise. Are you saying to go clockwise because hes doing an inside? im guessing counter clockwise is good if routing the outside of something, correct?

Good stuff! I've been screwing/clamping my fences to my workbench. It seems like such an obvious jig to make with T tracks, I'm not sure why I haven't thought of this.

With a little design tweeking, you can double this as a flatenning jig for your router too. Maybe for end-grain cutting boards you wouldn't put through the planer

what diameter core box bit do you use? also, If your boards are different thicknesses, does this jig have an issue with that or able to compensate for that or would that change the design of it?
I bought the router in the link after I built the jig which is awesome but the base of the router is 6 1/2". I don't want the juice grooves in too far, you can adjust the base?
Is there a typical distance away from the edge of the cutting board you like to space? I shoot for about a 3/4" space. What say you?
Hi James, I was wondering if I could use 48”x24” plywood for this instead of 30”x29”? Would there be a way to change the dimensions and measurements that u use and still make this work?
